Chapter 85: Chapter 84. A Little Lamb

For exactly fourteen seconds, there was only silence in the whole annex. The tumbling noise of the decoration filled the awkward void between two people tangled intimately on the kitchen table and a poor eyewitness.

It was a girl around Sarah’s age, clad in house staff uniform, and staring at them with genuine shock that could be felt even when her face was half covered by her hands.

Well, it wasn’t a surprising reaction. Sarah and Hajin looked like they were about to make love right on the kitchen island, after all; lips locking, hands on each other, and eyes filled with lust.

Yes, it was a normal reaction--if it was anywhere else.

In that house, however, everyone already knew the second young miss treated her bodyguard like a kept man; an upgraded plaything. They also knew the bodyguard would clean the house himself, so there was no need for the staff to do it unless the two of them spent the night somewhere else.

Thus, no staff would come there except to relay messages. Even then, they would tacitly step away if they knew the young miss was in the middle of enjoying her charming bodyguard.

"I’m..."

The poor staff’s lips parted behind her clasping hands, and when they were lowered, Sarah and Hajim could see how pale the girl was. Her widened eyes were shaking as if she saw her world just end, and in the next second, she bolted.

"I’m sorry!"

Sarah took a sharp breath. "Stop her."

Thankfully, they hadn’t started to undress or anything, so Hajin could immediately move without worrying about his pants. In several long strides and the speed of a seasoned agent, he caught the girl before she could reach the living room.

In the fluster of being careless enough to not realize someone was walking in on them, he dragged the girl back to the kitchen rather roughly, making her tremble in fear even more. He didn’t think the girl was there when Sarah made a call to Austin earlier, fortunately enough. Still...

When she was brought in front of Sarah--who had sat down on the dining chair again--she looked like she had just come out of a freezer: pale, stiff, and shivering. She looked genuine enough, at least. If she could bypass Hajin’s sense before he was all over Sarah, there was no reason for her to make a fuss after seeing them making out.

Normally, Sarah wouldn’t stop sneaking staff from leaving--if they brought back more gossip about the debauchery they witnessed in the annex, it would only be good for her. But the girl didn’t see Sarah acting smitten and flirty; she saw Sarah and Hajin all over each other. She saw Hajin’s hands on Sarah’s ass with eyes full of affection and face adorned with lust.

And they couldn’t have people knowing the truth just yet.

Hajin still had to trick the aunt after all.

Sarah crossed his legs and tilted her head, staring at the terrified-looking girl in front of her. "Now, who do we have here?"

Was she a spy sent to sneak around the annex? Or just a poor soul?

"I’m sorry! I’m sorry! Please forgive me!" the girl was already kneeling on the ground before anyone could tell her to do anything, rubbing her hands in a plea. "Please, please--please don’t send me away, Miss! Please...it’s my first day..."

She actually looked like she was about to cry. As someone who spent her days acting, however, Sarah couldn’t just believe someone easily. Who knew if someone sent a conman disguised as a new employee because Sarah was already too cautious about the existing ones?

"Your first day, huh?" Sarah glanced at Hajin, who was already clicking away behind his laptop.

With his secret access to the house’s security database, Hajin quickly found that it was indeed the girl’s very first day of work. He gave Sarah a nod before looking further into her information.

Meanwhile, Sarah’s gaze returned to the kneeling girl. "Why is someone cleaning my place on their first day?"

"Th--the other girls...tell me to do it, Miss," the girl stuttered. Sarah could see tears hanging in her eyes, ready to fall with just one push. "They said c-cleaning this building is the newbie’s job."

"Huh..."

"They told me I could just come inside and there wouldn’t be anyone--I swear, Miss! I didn’t mean to...mean to..." she looked at Sarah, and then Hajin, and back to Sarah with lips parted and pressed repeatedly. It seemed like the scene still shocked her, and whatever scenario happening inside her head, it prompted her to beg even more. "Oh, my God--please don’t sack me, Miss! Please?"

Again, Sarah looked at Hajin. The man walked to her with a tablet in hand, the girl’s basic information spread across the screen. "It’s her first day, alright," he said, and then added in a whisper. "Doesn’t seem to be sent by anyone."

Hajin pulled up a CCTV recording in the hallway outside the staff room, where a group of young staff who seemed very happy that they were no longer the ’lowest’ of the staff told her to clean the young miss’s annex.

So, at least it wasn’t just an excuse she pulled out of her ass.

Whether or not she was sent by someone else before then was a different thing altogether.

"Hmm...seems like you’re telling the truth," Sarah acknowledged that first, at least.

The grill nodded hurriedly. "Y-yes! It’s all true, Miss!"

"Still," Sarah leaned back and crossed her arms. "It’s so careless of you to just come in. Shouldn’t you hear people’s voices inside?"

The girl paled again and replied while lowering her head. "I...I thought it was the TV...Miss..."

She fidgeted on her knees, fingers fiddling with the apron on her uniform. The girl looked so pitiful and gullible that Sarah felt bad about trying to intimidate her.

"She does look like she was begging to be bullied, huh?" she glanced at Hajin, who gave an affirmative shrug.

"W-wha..."

"Now..." Sarah patted her knee, prompting the girl to press her lips back. "What to do with you?"

Hajin was still in the middle of a deeper investigation, looking for a sign that someone might have sent her to work in the mansion to spy on her. It might feel like paranoia, but Sarah didn’t want to risk it. And if she was truly just an innocent poor girl, then...

Maybe she could use her.

"I’ll--I’ll do anything for you, Miss! Please...I can’t lose this job," the girl offered herself without Sarah needing to throw any demands. She bit her lips and lowered her gaze to the floor again. "My mother..."

Sarah stiffened at that. She frowned and stared at the girl’s expression keenly. "What about your mother?"

If the girl was about to use her mother’s situation as a trick, Sarah wouldn’t just leave it. Hajin, however, told her it wasn’t. "She’s in the hospital, Master."

The bodyguard said it with a softer tone than he had been using, but the kneeling girl didn’t catch that. The only thing that flashed in her mind was...how?!

How did he know? There was no such thing in her application form...right?

"For?" the young miss asked.

"Liver."

"Treatable?"

"For now; as long as she receives continuous treatment," the bodyguard nodded, tapping away on his table as if he could see the mother’s medical record. "At least she won’t be dying soon."

The young miss tapped her arms while making a contemplating gaze. "Can a junior staff member’s salary cover that?"

"It’s enough to pay off the loan interest," the bodyguard replied.

This time, the girl couldn’t help but voice her astonishment. "H-how?"

How could they know all of that? Everything was so on point that the girl was convinced they also had her total amount of debt and financial situation. She had no idea how, and how it could be done in just a short time, but...

Goosebumps crawled along her spine.

"It’s not a very rare story," the bodyguard shrugged. "A hospital treatment couldn’t be paid in installments, so most would take a loan to pay for it first."

If it could, he didn’t have to feel so desperate for money five years ago.

Sarah stroked her lips, frowning slightly. "The interest must be high."

"This is how much she has to pay so far," the bodyguard, as the girl expected, showed what she presumed to be her debt calculation to the young miss.

Again, how?!

The amount did not even make the young miss blink, but she knew it was rather debilitating for others. "Quite high," she said.

"Indeed."

"As much as yours was?" the black eyes glanced at the bodyguard, who replied with a smile.

"Not that much."

"Huh..." Sarah tilted her head. She never asked in detail how much Hajin had to pay for the operation at that time, but if it was higher than this girl’s...Sarah finally understood why it could only be paid by winning in a low-bid event. "You must have received a lot of cuts."

The grey eyes curled with mirth. "Thanks to you, Master."

"Ex-excuse me?"

The girl, who had been rather ignored while the lovers were having their own conversation, dared herself to raise her hand. It was confusing enough to see that they knew everything there was about her, but she really wanted to know whether or not she would survive.

"Ah, right," the young miss shifted her gaze back to the confused and terrified girl. Still looking genuine, unless the girl was an Oscar-worthy actress. "You said you’d do anything, right?"

"Y-yes?" the girl blinked, her brain digesting the words. "Yes! Yes, I’ll do anything!"

"Then," Sarah leaned forward, propping her hand on her thigh as she stared into the relief in the girl’s eyes. "What about working for me, girl?"

"...pardon?" the girl tilted her head in confusion. "But I have already--"

"You work for the house," the bodyguard cut her.

Again, the girl blinked, working extra hard to understand what the difference was. Fortunately, she wasn’t that dumb. "Oh!" the girl exclaimed. Her confused gaze turned cautious, however. "But...what will I be doing if I work for you, Miss?"

"Just your usual," Sarah leaned back again, shrugging. "While using your ears extra keenly."

The girl gasped and lowered her voice. "Do you...want me to spy the house, Miss?"

Hajin almost snorted. "She saw too many movies, didn’t she?"

Sarah chuckled. "No, no, girl. I just want you to hear as much stuff as you can in the house--even if you don’t think the conversation is important--and report to me."

"I can do that!" the girl nodded enthusiastically.

Anything that guaranteed her survival.

"The contract down payment will be the debt you currently have," the young miss said while standing up, and the girl could only look at her blankly.

"...yes?"

Sarah waved her hand dismissively while walking out of the kitchen with her documents in hand. "Fill her in, J."

"Yes, Master."

The girl still blinking slowly in a daze, her butt slumping on the floor. Only when the bodyguard clapped his hand loudly did she finally stir, still questioning everything even while listening to the scary man.
