Burning The House Of Cards: taking revenge on my billionaire family -
Chapter 62 - 61. Blurred Line
Chapter 62: Chapter 61. Blurred Line
Emotionally exhausted from talking about Mason and arguing with Hajin right after, Sarah fell into a deep sleep. She didn’t even seem to have nightmares--a very rare occurrence. Perhaps because she got to eat a comfort food, although Hajin hoped their kiss had some contribution to it.
But, well...the important thing was that she could sleep peacefully.
It was such a precious occasion that Hajin got angry when Sarah’s phone kept ringing and vibrating on the nightstand, worried it might wake her up. Yes, she rarely woke up from the alarm or calls, but he didn’t want to take a chance.
He snatched the phone with a frown, wondering if he should turn the thing off altogether. But he saw the caller’s ID and paused. ’Chief Secretary’ it said, which meant the chairman’s direct assistant; the man who always followed him around.
Hmm...he couldn’t just cut this one off, right? Taking her call if she wasn’t able was one of his jobs, after all.
Hajin shrugged and pressed the green button. "This is Ryu Hajin, my master is sleeping."
[Ah...she is? Then you must pardon me for disturbing her rest] the voice on the other side was of an old man who very much wanted to scold the youngsters for not having manners. Still, he managed to suppress it somewhat. [But please wake her up soon, because her presence is expected at the company]
Hajin narrowed his eyes. "No one told us about any appointment."
[Well, yes] Hajin could feel the old man’s eye roll from the tone alone. [Perhaps if you stay at home instead...]
Hajin smiled at the thick criticism that fulfilled his master’s objective and replied with a light tone. "Is this important?"
[That is not for you to decide, Young Man]
Hajin scoffed inwardly. But just like he knew the call was important, he also knew a summon from the main office was important. While he wanted nothing more than to let Sarah sleep in, she would probably scold him if he didn’t wake her up.
"Understood," he said. "I shall wake her up promptly."
He lowered the phone without cutting off the connection and climbed up to bed. His knees pressed into where he knew would creak the loudest, the sound traveling through the phone he carefully placed on an unused pillow.
Making sure the call was still connected, Hajin leaned down and whispered alluringly above the sleeping girl’s ear. "Master..."
Perhaps because she was still tired, Sarah did not flinch like eighty percent of the time. Still closing her eyes, she squirmed beneath the blanket and murmured drowsily. "Nggh?"
"Master, you have to wake up," Hajin smiled.
"Mm--five...five minutes..." Sarah turned herself sideways, curling like a cat.
Hajin poked her cheek and spoke in a whiny tone. "You always say that, but you keep sleeping in."
"But I’m...so tired..."
The grey eyes curled as Hajin smiled deeply. "That’s why I told you we should stop last night, Master," he glanced at the still-connected call on the side. "But you keep telling me more, more..."
"Nggh...but..." Sarah slurred her reply, clutching the blanket to wrap herself tighter. "It’s hard to stop...after we start..."
Hajin had to bite his cheek to prevent himself from laughing. How...oh, how could his master reply so perfectly? So in sync with what he wanted to show the old man on the other side of the phone?
While Hajin could suppress the sound of his laughter, he couldn’t hide the shaking of his shoulder. The small vibration made Sarah blink herself awake, feeling suspicious. The conversation slowly registered in her drowsy mind, and she turned toward the man with a frown.
"Hey, why are you--"
Hajin put his finger on Sarah’s lips, stopping her words. He glanced at the phone, and Sarah picked it up silently with curiosity. Within the few seconds of silence, the call was finally cut off from the other side, the name ’Chief Secretary’ stared at her above the call time.
Her brain wired up immediately, finally realizing why Hajin talked to her so much with such a flirty voice first thing in the morning instead of letting her digest the drowsiness while making her a morning coffee. She looked at the bodyguard with narrowed eyes. "You..."
Hajin tilted his head, looking all cheeky and innocent.
Sarah felt embarrassed when she recalled the innocent reply that could sound very suggestive to those who didn’t know the context, but...
"That was perfect," she threw her phone back to the bed and nodded.
She was embarrassed, but thinking about it as an act made it so much more bearable.
"Thank you for the compliment," Hajin gave her an exaggerated, gentlemanly bow, which did not match with her cheeky smirk. "He wants you to come to the company right away; shall I prepare your meal?"
"Yeah," Sarah stretched out her arms and yawned to chase away the leftover drowsiness. While drinking the water on her nightstand, she watched the back of her bodyguard strangely.
His steps were light, and his shoulder wasn’t tense. There was no annoyance or tension in his tone and expression; no reluctance.
"You don’t seem to mind doing it now," Sarah muttered before Hajin reached the door.
The man stopped and turned around. "Pardon?"
"Acting," Sarah said, staring at the clear grey eyes.
Those eyes curled into a pair of half moons, twinkling cheerfully. "Was it, though?" he asked before closing the bedroom door to prepare Sarah’s meal.
Right. The softness, the flirtiness, the leaking affection...
Was it really just acting from now on?
* * *
"You’re not coming in late this time, Master?" Hajin asked while they were driving to the main office.
Different from the day before, when she deliberately took her time before meeting Amber, Sarah didn’t waste much time after waking up. She quickly washed up and had a light meal, even wearing a blazer jacket--at that point, they had a bunch of clothes permanently stashed in the hotel already.
"We’re late already since he had to call three times," Sarah chuckled from the back seat. Again, because they would go to the company. "But you can guess what this is about, right?"
Hajin tapped the steering wheel in contemplation. If it was to meet the chairman for personal business, Lee Hyuk would call her himself, or the appointment would be made outside while having lunch or dinner--at least, that was how it usually was with the other children. Besides, they could just meet at home when the chairman visited the mansion.
The chief secretary also didn’t tell her to come to the chairman’s office specifically, but merely to the company.
"They’ll give you a position of some sort?"
"Bingo!" Sarah snapped her fingers. "Well, it could be anything, but just to make sure, I don’t want that old man to be more annoyed and send us to an affiliate company in the middle of nowhere."
Or worse--sending them abroad. It would be hard to operate if they did not stay in the capital. How else could Sarah wreck the family from the inside if she were not inside?
"What if they do anyway?" Hajin asked.
"Then I’ll throw a tantrum in front of the chairman," Sarah said. She paused and glanced at Hajin through the rear-view mirror, before adding quietly. "Well...I don’t think Mason will let it slide."
The hands gripping the steering wheel got tighter for a few seconds, and Sarah could feel the temperature drop almost instantly. Fortunately, it didn’t take long for Hajin to manage his emotions, and he smiled coldly instead.
"So that bastard has a use at least?"
Sarah exhaled in relief. "Why do you think I let him off this long?"
Aside from making sure she wouldn’t get sent away again, Sarah needed the first son’s origin case to be a stone that would break the first wife’s faction. Like Amber said, she could just blow it out immediately, sending the result of her investigation to the media, the board of directors, and the whole conglomerate circle. She could ask Yonghwa’s help to make sure it did not get buried.
She would do that without any hesitation to get rid of the man as soon as possible, if the one she wanted to take revenge on were only Mason.
But he wasn’t the only one. And before she destroyed him completely, she wanted to use him as a pawn for her revenge.
Which seemed to be working so far.
"Did you hear that commotion in front of Executive Director Lee’s office?"
They heard the whisper of employees near the smoking area when they headed to the secretariat office, before they turned to a corner. Sarah halted her steps and pulled Hajin to her as she leaned against the wall--as if they were about to make out.
Her eyes, however, were drawn to the source of the whispers. Hajin narrowed his eyes and leaned down to rest his lips against the girl’s ears. "Master..."
"Sush--I’m trying to listen!" Sarah hissed quietly, and careened her neck even more.
"I didn’t--what’s this about? Who dares make a commotion in the crown prince’s office?"
"The crown prince’s brother--who else?"
"Oh, well..." someone chuckled. "If it’s the second son...it could be about anything."
"This time, it seems to be something big. I heard..." the whisper became slightly quieter, "I heard the second young master is going to be transferred to a foreign branch."
...huh. Sarah tilted her head in surprise. She knew Mason said he would punish his brothers, but...wasn’t this basically an exilement?
On the other hand...
"Seems like I don’t need to worry about being sent far," Sarah smirked.
There was no way she would be sent away when someone else had already faced it. Otherwise, people would think something wasn’t right with the family, sending two children away.
Sarah turned her face forward and narrowed her eyes. "What’s with you?"
"You shouldn’t tease a young man in public, Master..." Hajin pursed his lips, caging Sarah with his arms.
Sarah rolled her eyes and pulled the jeweled collar, planting a short, chaste peck before pushing the bodyguard back.
"There," she flicked the man’s chin before walking away. "Be satisfied with that."
