Chapter 30: Chapter 29. Mischievous Little Butterfly

The Chief sighed in frustration.

Yeah, it was pretty obvious that this demand was unreasonable.

It was more apparent the more candidates failed miserably during the test, one by one. Everything was just because the young miss was acting up, and the eldest son adhered to it as a ruse. The Chief was pretty sure that in the end, the young miss would be told that no one fulfilled the condition and he had to choose someone already listed in the security division.

The Chief knew these people didn’t really have all the skills listed in the requirement. But he also thought there wouldn’t be any. After all, if there existed someone who carried all of these skills inside their body, wouldn’t that person already be in employment somewhere? Like in a royal palace or NIS or something?

Or so he thought, until that man’s turn came.

The man stood out from the start, which was why he got drowned, left out of the Chief’s interest. Because the man stood out due to his appearance, he didn’t even bother to look into the man’s files.

Until the man owned the stage, that is.

During the fighting stage of the test, the candidates were given difficulty levels. They could choose how many people they wanted to fight with—from one to five. Of course, the more people they faced, the more points they would get—assuming they win.

Some people who weren’t confident in the other aspect chose to fight more, hoping for more points there. Those who wanted to conserve their stamina for the housekeeping part and their concentration for the verbal explanation part chose the lowest difficulty.

What they didn’t think over was; would the existing bodyguard chosen to be their opponent even let them win? These people were the people who would be installed as the young miss’s bodyguards if no one managed to pass. Certainly, there was animosity there towards the candidates.

No one who chose more than one opponent managed to leave the arena unscathed. One even fell unconscious while another one had a broken arm. People steadily chose just one opponent after that, but they left the arena completely exhausted and the rest of their test was a mess. Regardless of whether they managed to concoct a meal or produce a cup of coffee, the sound coming from their mouth wasn’t even proper language anymore, just a wheezing and gasping sound.

There was a candidate during the sixth turn that managed to actually talk decently in broken English, although the food she made was totally burnt, the coffee was just a powder mixed with hot water, and the cocktail was just a whole spirit dumped into shot glasses. The young miss would probably throw another tantrum if the Chief passed this one.

Not that he had any intention of passing anyone at all.

When the name Ryu Hajin came out, the Chief was in the middle of contemplating the fabricated report. He was one of the last people, and already marked with low point just from how he looked alone. Of course, they saw the man was equipped with well-trained muscle, but so was everyone. Would someone who cared so much about their appearance even have the time to proceed with their duty?

The bodyguards and the candidates sneered, almost laughing when the man spoke confidently while wearing black leather gloves as he walked toward the arena. "Five. Come at me at once."

While the others thought it was hilarious, the Chief was frowning. He hated arrogant candidates, since they would be his subordinates in the future. And he hated people who did outrageous things for show. With that in mind, the Chief proceeded to pick five of the best fighters from the fresh batch who hadn’t faced any candidates so far.

He was expecting a one-sided beating.

And one-sided beating he spectated. Only, it was the lone man beating his five prized subordinates, with nothing but a pair of leather-gloved hands. His movement was sharp and precise, without any waste or useless showmanship. It was clear within the professional eyes that watched the arena, that the man was trained in the art of killing.

There was an unfazed smile on the man’s face, adding the eeriness of the calm storm in his eyes. He incapacitated all five of his opponents in a mere two minutes, and as he stepped out of the arena, there was not a single drop of sweat nor a splatter of blood that invaded his perfect appearance.

Aside from a few loose strands of hair, he exited the arena with the same look he went in.

The Chief immediately snatched the man’s file from his subordinate, eyes glossed over everything until he reached the resume about his career.

Aegis. The man worked for the nation’s best private security company. The list of missions and important figures the man had handled filled two pages of the resume alone. Below that, the reason why the man did not extend his contract with such a prestigious company was listed; he was tired of risking his life and wanted a high-paying job that allowed him to go violent.

The Chief gritted his teeth. He wasn’t angry though, he just hiding his laughter.

Ah, this Ryu Hajin seemed to be a bit crooked—a man who could be bought by money was the best for a conglomerate family; they had enough wealth to buy people’s loyalty. But most crooked people were incompetent, so finding one with top-tier skills was like finding a needle in a haystack.

But they had to see how the needle handle the spindle now. The man might look unaffected by the fight—and for the first time, the ones who came out on a stretcher were the bodyguards—but who knew how he would fare in the other test.

"Haa, shit, what kind of person is still unemployed with this kind of—"

The Chief—and probably the rest of the people there—just watched in awe as the man asked them what the young miss liked to eat and drink in perfect English while removing his gloves. The one who answered—one of the senior house staff of the family mansion—of course, had no idea what the young miss would like now, so she just derived from the memory of what young miss Seul-ah liked to eat before, Korean Food.

There was a certain difficulty in explaining the process of making Korean meals in a foreign language, but the man was somehow able to do it as if he was shooting a cooking show.

A handsome visage. A nice, soothing voice with a flowing presentation. Techniques that no one could deny. Smell that got people salivating. If random people walked into the ballroom they used for today’s test, they might think that the company was in the middle of shooting a commercial.

Not even the stern Chief and the picky house staff could give the man a low score—their pride as professionals did not allow them to. This man called Ryu Hajin might be the one who got chosen in the end.

Unfortunately, due to the Chief losing his five best staff, the ones still available were those who were already exhausted from the earlier candidate’s test, or the junior personnel. So the candidates after that managed to at least go until the next part and received decent points.

In the end, there were four people, including Ryu Hajin, who made it fine to the end, and one was included for having the fifth-highest score. Of course, Hajin retained the number one spot throughout, but the point system was only used to select the five last candidates for the last interview process, and those points became useless once the five people had been selected.

It all depended on the interview now, and the Chief was quite sure two of the five were probably sent by the other family member to spy on the young miss. Not that he cared. The second young miss was useless now that she wasn’t the favored child and had no backing.

The interview was meant to be conducted in the conference room, but when they were about to enter the lift to head there, a manager suddenly ran toward the Chief, and whispered something in the old man’s ear.

"What? Why—" the Chief looked flabbergasted for a second, but quickly closed his mouth and brought the candidates to the upper floor.

But instead of the conference room they used earlier as planned, the elevator came up higher and higher, and only stopped at the floor where the VIP lounge was located.

Naturally, even the committee in charge of handling this recruitment was confused. Seeing that confused expression left the candidates bewildered--except for Hajin, whose smile had never faltered since they stepped into the lavishly decorated lounge. That smile grew wider, filling the deep lake in his eyes with a brilliance of sunlight for his world to see.

For her to see.

"Young Miss," the employee all bowed their head to a young woman sitting leisurely on the couch, watching them come in with eyes full of boredom. "What brings you here?"

The candidates, who were flabbergasted for a second, realized that the redhead who looked like a glamorous idol in front of them was their future employer and swiftly fixed their posture, bowing to the direction of the couch.

"I was driving around for a bit," the young woman started, eyeing the candidates one by one. "And then it occurred to me that if I take someone to work for me, then shouldn’t I have the final say on the matter?"

"That..." the Chief bit the inside of his cheek. The matter of assigning bodyguards for the chairman’s family members had always been falling within his authority. But then again, he knew that the ’bodyguard’ the young miss looking for would be akin to an attendant more than a bodyguard, so the young miss wasn’t wrong in that regard. "Yes, of course, you are right, Young Miss."

"Right?" Sarah threw a smile, enough to stun the crowd and make a person twitch. "So I’ll be the only one conducting the interview."

The senior house staff was startled. "Wh-what? Just you, Young Miss?"

"Why?" Sarah tilted her head. "Since they come this far, it means they fulfilled the requirement, aren’t they?"

She smirked at the staff, as if saying that she knew the staff would just give a good score to the candidate secretly sent by the third wife. But that couldn’t be, right? The young miss wouldn’t know of it...right?

"All that is needed now is how well they vibe with me, isn’t it?" the young miss shrugged her shoulder, before crossing her legs and arms, looking straight at the Chief and the house staff.

She was so reasonable it was annoying.

"As you wish, Young Miss," the Chief relented. He took a folder from his subordinate’s hand and walked toward Sarah. "This is the examination sheet for—"

"I don’t need that," the young miss raised her hand to stop the Chief, who froze and pressed his lips in annoyance.

Without showing any care, the young miss waved her hand toward the five last candidates. "Get here and stand before me so I can look at you better. Ah, stand according to height, I hate seeing things crooked—you, the tall one, stand in the middle."

The candidates naturally followed through while trying to observe the young miss who would be their charge if chosen. She was a pretty little thing with big, deep black eyes and some delicate features that still shone through the sharp makeup she used. She easily pulled off the dyed hair and glamorous style that would make people think she was an idol about to go on stage.

But that pretty face was now flashing a mischievous smirk, as the young miss leaned into the handrest while tapping on her red lips—a movement that had a certain pair of stormy eyes glint.

"Let’s see...I don’t like complicated things, so..." the deep black eyes narrowed, as the elegant voice flowed. The atmosphere was tense, and the candidates held their breath to wait on what kind of things this young miss--who made such unbelievable demand for a test--would ask them.
