Chapter 105: Chapter 104. Not So Little Lamb

"What the fuck is this?!"

Sarah and Hajin raised their brows as they watched Mari slam her fists on the table. The girl continued to kick invisible stuff in the air and threw invisible objects while letting out angry noises.

Rather entertaining, they must say.

"That’s what he did, Miss."

Mari ended her passionate enactment with bated breath. Her face, however, flushed in excitement. Pretty good for someone who watched Mason’s wrath directly.

But then again, she had faced a loan shark’s threats and the possibility of her mother’s death. A young master’s wrath was hardly scary if she didn’t have to fear getting sacked.

Unlike when she faced Sarah before.

"That’s your phone he threw?" Sarah asked, turning her eyes back to the mirror, and continued putting on makeup for that night’s monthly dinner.

It had been three days since their ’photoshoot’ moment. To avoid early confrontation--which hopefully would flame Mason even more--Sarah had been leaving the house early and coming home late, holing up in the new company so she looked like she was working. Since Mason wouldn’t risk being seen meeting her deliberately, he wouldn’t go to the company to ask her why she didn’t kick Hajin out.

On the other hand, he wouldn’t tell anyone about Hajin’s real identity. Perhaps he would if Chairman Yoo did not want an heir, but since he did, letting their father know would only mean adding another possible suitor for Sarah. Obviously, Mason wouldn’t want that.

Mason would have been so, so pissed this time.

But alas, the monthly dinner was here again, and Sarah had to attend again. She called Mari to find out what happened afterward, and the girl gave her one hell of a show.

Where was that timid scaredy lamb they saw the first time? Sarah wondered if this was her actual personality before her mother fell ill and the debt was creeping in. Hajin did say Mari had to stop going to college because of that, so it must have been devastating.

But she didn’t have to get stressed about money again--at least for the debt--so the girl seemed to regain her energy. She still had to work to pay for the continuous treatment, but at least she was free of the loan shark.

Compared to those scary men who could take her and sold her piece by piece, being Sarah’s little spy was so much better.

Even if she had to receive other family members’ wrath.

As expected, Mason was angry. He looked at the pictures and the short video for a few seconds before throwing Mari’s phone across the room and kicking everything that could be kicked around him while cursing the whole zoo.

Sarah had to admit Mari’s skill; the pictures she produced truly seemed like it was taken secretly, from afar, while hiding. The awkward angle, the zooming, even the shaky video in the end, which showed the kiss and the soft moan properly. The video ended abruptly by panning downward, as if she were hiding and had to crawl back to report.

Even Sarah almost believed she was being photographed secretly.

Did this girl work as a paparazzi before? No--she was too young. An idol’s fansite master?

"Yes, Miss!" she excitedly confirmed that her phone was indeed thrown by Mason. "And as you instructed, I grabbed the phone immediately. I even crawled, Miss--and properly cried, Sir!"

"Good job...I guess?"

Even Hajin, who was in the middle of preparing Sarah’s clothes, seemed at a loss for words against this change. Sarah chuckled and asked again. "Did they replace your phone?"

"Yes, Miss."

It must have been replaced with the latest model, seeing her wide grin. Perhaps they thought it would be enough as a payment too, since they didn’t give Mari anything else.

What a cheapskate.

Still, since Mari worked for Sarah anyway, she didn’t care. The new phone was enough.

"Give the broken one to my puppy," Sarah said. "Have anything you need to hide there?"

Mari shook her head while shrugging nonchalantly. "No, Miss."

Sarah nodded, smiling as she applied a smidge of blush. "Good job."

Hajin smirked as he brought the clothes he had just steamed to the standing hanger beside the vanity table. "Seems like you’re finally useful."

"Hehe..."

"None of the gossip you bring is though."

"Ugh..." the grin disappeared as fast as it formed, and Mari lowered her head again with a sigh. "I’m sorry..."

"The clique is strong, huh?" Sarah hummed while choosing a lip color.

Since the family itself was divided into factions, the staff followed through. It was carried not only in daily life, but also in the job itself. Only certain people are allowed to clean the third wife’s quarters, and those people are the one she brought, so they didn’t gossip in front of others.

The little new lamb, who came without being pulled by anyone who was already inside, found herself out of the loop, not included in any groupies.

"Maybe we should be the ones feeding them gossip instead. Or..." Sarah tapped the table with the butt of her lipstick case in contemplation, before turning around and look at Mari with narrowed eyes. "If we give you some devices, can you put them in places where those people usually talk among themselves?"

Mari’s eyes flashed for a second. "You mean...like a listening device or cameras, Miss?"

"Something like that."

"Hmm..." the girl stroked her chin in contemplation, and snapped her fingers after a few seconds. "Oh--I think I can."

Hajin arched his brow. "How?"

"They always use cleaning the staff room as punishment--you know, Miss, since it means the one cleaning it is lower than them," Mari explained. "I can just make some mistakes and get myself punished."

"Heh," Hajin smirked at the girl’s creative--or rather, radical--way of getting inside the lair. "Just don’t get fired."

"No, no--I’ll make a mistake at them, like accidentally spilling or something," she said with a giggle, as if she had been waiting for such a day. "They can’t make me get fired with that kind of mistake. They still need a slave after all."

Sarah couldn’t help but laugh at the little tenacious lamb. "I’ll tell you later when to take the device," she said, nodding at the girl. "You can leave for now."

"Yes, Miss!" Mari bowed deeply before scurrying out of the bedroom.

"The trash bags are in the kitchen," Hajin told the girl before she disappeared behind the door.

"Yes, Sir!"

The girl replied with a salute. She grabbed the two trash bags Hajin had prepared as her cover--after all, there should be a reason for her to come to the annex. Saying they didn’t have time to clean while preparing for the monthly dinner, Sarah asked the housekeeper to send someone over. Without needing to specify, they sent Mari again--who was actually ready to volunteer. At that point, it was already established that if the annex needed anyone, she would be sent over.

Of course, Mari would put a little act of looking disheartened before and after. If anyone asked, she would always say she was getting scolded again. The more she looked miserable upon returning, the more the others refused to go to the annex.

"Seems like she studied in broadcasting major," Hajin told Sarah while helping her put on her blouse. This time, she wanted to cosplay an office lady--or rather, an office siren with blonde hair.

"Ah; so she did want to make a film--not starring in one," Sarah chuckled at the memory of her ordering them around for more poses the other day. Sarah felt like the girl would be good friends with Sua. Maybe she should let them meet after everything’s over. "That explains a lot."

"Too bad," Hajin remarked in a familiar, pitiful tone. "She seems passionate, at least."

"That’s what life does to you. At least she knows what she wants to do," Sarah smiled bitterly. "Better than some people."

Hajin glanced at the mirror reflecting Sarah’s downcast expression; the girl who almost had everything, and yet never dreamed of anything. The life of a doll, of a pupper made with others’ ambition and interest--none of which pushed in with any consideration for her own wish.

Perhaps, once upon a time, that girl still had a dream. When life was still as simple as playing with toys and sleeping inside her mother’s embrace. But it had been too long and too buried by the expectation of the adults that the dream had no chance to even flourish.

Even when the girl finally broke free of the expectation, she could no longer recall what dream she had had in the past, and she had no time or energy left to form a new dream from her shattered soul.

At least, not until that shattered soul got mended.

Sarah blinked when a warm hand pinched her chin and tilted her head up, capturing her lips on a soft, gentle, warm kiss that let her melt into nothing but comfort. She sighed into the kiss and closed her eyes, sinking into the soothing sensation spreading inside her, calming her heart and mind.

Right. Perhaps her soul could be mended one day. Just like her heart.

"Don’t ruin my makeup before the event," Sarah whispered in protest after the kiss ended, but made no effort to get away from the bodyguard’s embrace. "Anyway, she is still young. Maybe she can go back to that path."

"If someone helps her," Hajin leaned down, planting a soft kiss just above the collar of her blouse. "Like a very soft-hearted princess."

Sarah narrowed her eyes. "You called me cruel last time."

"Only for men’s hearts."

Sarah rolled her eyes and patted the bodyguard’s hands to let her go. She took a deep breath and turned around, looking at the main house from the window.

"Let’s go," she exhaled harshly before walking away.

To the beehive she must rattle.
