Chapter 22: The rest of our story

After Elyssia and Tiss playfully bicker with me as some strange prize to war over, they part ways and Elyssia takes a seat beside me on the log, Tiss sitting on my opposite side.

[Elyssia] "I apologize if goofing around was inappropriate. I haven’t seen Tiss in so long. I missed having fun with her. Plus, I felt like we needed some levity."

[Tiss] "I missed you, too... Even if we were only gone for what felt like two days."

[Wade?] "Should I finish talking about the labyrinth?"

[Elyssia] "Please, continue."

I take a moment to collect my thoughts.

[Wade?] "So we wandered that labyrinth for a long time. I even found a treasure chest. Never found another one though. After a while, I stopped thinking one would appear. And we got some item drops from a STRING THEORY. Since that moment, I power spiked a bit by unlocking a secret Job and using a cool new item. Then we met Jiji."

[Elyssia] "Hold on... You’re moving a little fast. Secret Job? New item? Jiji?"

[Wade?] "Ah, sorry."

I rub the back of my head and nervously laugh. I started moving a bit too fast for her. I guess our story is rather strange, after all.

[Wade?] "So, I got a Job called Fatemancer. I gained powers to alter fate. Not many skills associated with the Job, but my stats get a huge boost and I was able to save our lives a handful of times."

[Tiss] "I don’t get it. You were just pointing and yelling ’Weal’ or ’Woe’. I never saw anything change."

[Wade?] "It must be different for us, then. See, I alter fate, just like I said. You never got killed. But every time that I yelled Weal, I watched you die. That skill changed fate and altered things in your favor."

[Tiss] "You... watched me die?"

[Wade?] "Yeah... it was actually really horrible. Usually it was the same way that... that Rick died."

[Tiss] "Why didn’t you say anything!?"

[Wade?] "I... don’t know. I hated that. But I saved you each time. And I promised I would keep protecting you."

Tiss huffs and looks like she’s about to get angry. Instead she turns her head to look at the sky.

[Tiss] "Thank you..."

[Wade?] "Hm? I thought you’d be more upset with me."

[Tiss] "I’m kinda mad, but... I can only be so mad at someone who did so much to protect me."

[Elyssia] "Ufufuf~"

Elyssia is covering her mouth while laughing and blushing. It seems the interactions between Tiss and I are entertaining to her. Elyssia’s nonverbal teasing earns a glare from the embarrassed Tiss.

[Wade?] "Anyways... I’ll show you the cool item."

I hold out my left hand with my hand clenched in a fist. I equip the Doppler Shift from my Item Box and the chain appears in my clenched hand. Elyssia takes a good look at the structure of it. A large golden ring, a smaller inner ring of ivory, and the strange nucleus in the center. All dangling from a golden chain.

[Elyssia] "It’s fascinating. What does it do?"

[Wade?] "It offers no combat stats or buffs. It just has a skill that allows me to shift the relative position of one entity in relation to myself up to 50 feet."

[Elyssia] "Oh! That’s incredibly useful. Is the move gradual or instant?"

[Wade?] "I haven’t tested it in this dimension, but it was like a mix of both in the labyrinth. But relativity, time, and space were all warped so I can’t confirm."

[Elyssia] "Then use it on me. Try to move me ten feet."

Elyssia stands up and walks just few steps away from the camp. Tiss looks somewhat confused by the conversation.

[Wade?] "Alright."

[Tiss] "Is this safe?"

[Wade?] "Probably."

[Tiss] "Only probably?"

[Elyssia] "Probably is good enough, go ahead!"

I lift the Doppler Shift, focus on Elyssia as the target, and use the skill Relativity Shift. Mentally, I aim to move her only ten feet back. In an instant, Elyssia blinks from her standing position to a spot ten feet back. When she arrives there, she’s standing the exact same way, but she stumbles a bit before she comes running back to the log to take a seat.

[Wade?] "So? What was it like?"

[Elyssia] "Instantaneous change in relative space. Theoretically, that could send someone through a wall without touching the wall."

[Wade?] "But what if I land someone inside a wall?"

[Elyssia] "No idea, but it would probably be bad."

I unequip Doppler Shift and put it back in my Item Box.

[Elyssia] "Okay, so now who is Jiji?"

[Wade?] "Jiji is a chicken."

[Elyssia] "You met a chicken in the labyrinth?"

[Tiss] "Jiji’s very sweet and very knowledgeable."

[Elyssia] "Since when can you speak chicken, Tiss?"

[Tiss] "I can’t."

[Elyssia] "I see... And can Wade speak chicken?"

[Wade?] "Not really, but Jiji and I can perfectly understand each other."

[Elyssia] "And where is this Jiji?"

[Wade?] "Hmm... Well let me try something to bring her here."

I open my Item Box and pull out Jiji’s Nest. I hold up the construction made of legendary sticks and it glows with a faint golden aura.

[Elyssia] "What are you doing?"

[Wade?] "Trying to call Jiji."

[Tiss] "Oh that’s smart. She really loves the next we helped her build."

[Elyssia] "...?"

Elyssia sits and watches with curiosity. Nothing happens for a few minutes. My arms are growing tired by holding the nest above my head.

[Elyssia] "Look, I believe you about the chicken. You don’t have to try so hard to get it to come to you."

[Wade?] "It’ll work, just trust me."

[Tiss] "Wade, it’s okay. Jiji flew off when we got here, she’s probably long gone."

[Wade?] "I believe in Jiji!"

As I make my declaration, a golden streak arcs across the sky and then redirects to start hurdling towards me. Plummeting from the sky like a meteor is Jiji. She picks up more and more speed, seeming to glow brighter with every second.

[Wade?] "Jiji!"

[Jiji] "Bkaaaaaaaaawwwwwwwww!!!"

Jiji crashes into the nest with incredible force. I flip backwards off the log and roll over back onto my ass. I clutch Jiji’s nest tight to my chest. When I’m stable, I take a look inside and see Jiji sitting calmly in her nest.

[Jiji] "Bawk bawk."

[Wade?] "I’m sorry. I just wanted to call on you. This isn’t where I’m going to set up your nest."

[Jiji] "Bkaw!"

[Wade?] "Of course, Jiji. Sunny area, but the nest should be in a good shady place. I’ll do that for you."

[Jiji] "Bkaw!"

I laugh and stroke Jiji’s back. She fluffs up her feathers and enjoys the gentle touches.

[Elyssia] "So the chicken is real... And can fly at such high speeds. It’s definitely not a normal hen."

[Tiss] "Well that’s because Jiji is Jiji. She’s not just any hen."

I return to the log and sit with Jiji’s nest on my lap and Jiji sitting in the nest.

[Wade?] "She just so happened to save my life when I arrived in this world. And then we saved her in the labyrinth. I asked her to show us the way out and she did. Now we’re back here."

[Jiji] "Bawk! Bawk bkaw!"

[Wade?] "Yes, Jiji. Now I’m on a quest to find you the best home."

[Tiss] "Well maybe we can find a perfect place in the Duke’s castle. Some nice places high up that get good shade and lots of sunny spots nearby."

[Jiji] "Bkaw!"

[Wade?] "She says that she’d love to see it."

[Elyssia] "That might be a little difficult."

[Tiss] "Hm? What do you mean?"

[Elyssia] "Well... It’s been a long time. And you’ve missed a lot of what’s happened in the whole kingdom."

[Tiss] "Then... is my family okay at least?"

[Elyssia] "I’m sorry, Tiss... They all died about 4 years ago."

Tiss’ expression become warped in despair.

[Tiss] "No... All of them? My parents? My brothers?"

[Elyssia] "I think that maybe it’s time for me to tell you about everything that you missed."

Tiss’ eyes are streaming with tears. She struggle to wipe them all away. She sobs without end.

[Wade?] "Maybe we should take a little break, yeah? It’s starting to get late in the day. Maybe we should have something to eat."

Tiss doesn’t react. She only cries. The loss of her family is a huge thing to bear. And she never got a chance to say goodbye, either.

[Elyssia] "I have some food, but not much. We may need to hunt and forage for some more."

[Wade?] "We might need to hunt at all. We’ve got Jiji here."

[Jiji] "Bkaw?"

[Wade?] "No, silly. We won’t eat you. I’ve still got a bunch of eggs!"

I pull one out of my Item Box and grin happily.

[Elyssia] "That’ll come in handy, I’m sure. I’ll go look some mushrooms. There’s a lot of edible ones nearby. Wade, take care of Tiss while I’m gone, okay?"

I nod in acknowledgement to Elyssia as she stands up and turns to go wander the forest. I set Jiji and her nest to the side while storing the egg back in my Item Box. Tiss is still sobbing, doubled over her lap, holding her face while crying out powerful streams of tears.

I just scoot closer, put my hand on her back, and stroke her gently. I’ll let her cry as much as she wants. She’s been through a lot.
