Chapter 53 - 53 53 Sweeping
53: Chapter 53: Sweeping 53: Chapter 53: Sweeping The mayor’s office and living space was the town hall in this small town.
After no one watched over them, the two guards guarding the entrance felt dejected and sat on the ground.
Violet bypassed them, even though she wanted to find something in the town hall, she couldn’t just blatantly steal in broad daylight.
Doing so would simply be too outrageous.
So Violet casually floated past them, like she was out for a stroll, just happening to pass by.
This small town didn’t have high walls or barriers.
Along the wall of the town hall, Violet looked around and when she saw no pedestrians on the street, she seized Kars by the collar and hopped into the backyard of the town hall.
This was where the mayor’s carriage and the horses needed for his trips were kept.
However, even though Violet had thought through various possibilities, she still hadn’t anticipated who she would meet once she scaled the wall.
Almost as soon as she climbed over, a chambermaid opened the door.
In this moment of meeting eyes, everyone was stunned, staring at each other, not knowing what to say.
Kars was the first one of the trio to snap out of it.
Before the chambermaid could scream, he drew his sword and lunged forward, snatching hold of her and positioning his blade horizontally in front of her.
Using such threatening means, he scared the chambermaid into dropping the clay jar she was holding.
The sound of it breaking rang out.
Violet instantly raised her eyebrow before raising her magic mace.
However, this noise didn’t attract the guards, and no one inside the house seemed to find it unusual.
All was quiet, as if the town hall was deserted.
And it was indeed the case.
Upon seeing no one rushing in, Violet let out a small sigh of relief, walked over to the chambermaid, and said with a smile.
“Don’t worry, I won’t hurt you.
If you know where the mayor’s gold coins and his land deeds are kept, please hand them over.”
Frightened and at a loss for words, the chambermaid stiffly nodded her head.
Her teeth were chattering, shaking from the cold.
With her guidance, Violet nonchalantly strolled into the room, her hands behind her back.
As soon as she entered the room, the light dimmed as the curtains were tightly drawn, obstructing the sunlight and preventing any rays from shining through.
“Why is it so dark here?” Violet felt a sense of unease.
The chambermaid, shaking, cautiously explained: “The mayor never lets us open the curtains.”
At this moment, she trembled as though she feared doing something wrong, upsetting Violet and being killed.
However, her statement marked something more disturbing for Violet.
Why doesn’t he allow the curtains to be drawn?
Could there be something in this room that wasn’t meant to be seen?
If so, what could it be?
Sniffing at the air, Violet detected a familiar yet pungent smell of smoke and alcohol —the scent of a smoking addict who had smoked furiously for many years.
The tightly closed window prevented the strong smell from dissipating.
Given she had already arrived in this room, she unhesitatingly opened the aged curtains and cracked the window.
As she turned back, under the sunlight, she was nearly blinded by the sparkling lights in the room.
She then finally understood why the mayor was unwilling to open his windows.
Under the sunlight, almost every object in the room was glittering with gold light, even the quill he used to write with had a golden tip.
Violet believed that this was not any regular metal.
These dazzling golden objects were all made of gold.
After a moment of surprise, Violet snapped her fingers and summoned the undead.
Upon seeing the undead suddenly appearing in the room, Kars, who could no longer withstand the fear and strain, loosened his grip and the chambermaid fell unconscious.
Facing Violet’s doubtful gaze Kars shrugged helplessly and rolled his eyes.
“Get her out, quietly.” Violet signaled him to carry the unconscious chambermaid outside and hide her in a corner where she wouldn’t be found.
After he had left, the summoned undead began to act.
The white china inlaid with gold was placed in bags.
Anything valuable and movable in sight was cleared out.
While Kars was fussing about where to leave the unconscious chambermaid in the courtyard, Violet summoned even more undead.
If they weren’t used for battle, it didn’t matter how strong or weak they were.
What she needed to do now was loot everything!
Regardless of how valuable things in the room were, they must all be moved!
She didn’t want to use the mayor’s desk, so she instructed the newly summoned undead, armed with her weapons, to pry every piece of gold off the edge of the table.
If the items became too numerous to carry, she would let the undead carry them on their bodies.
After they had put on as much as they could and ensured that all the valuables had been placed in the hemp bags, the undead stood in front of Violet.
Looking at these skeleton monsters, each holding a large sack of items made from countless gold pieces.
One undead even carried a heavy chest that it was unable to pry open, choosing to hold the entire chest in its arms instead.
By summoning undead, as long as they come from the main world, they can bring these items to Violet the next time they were summoned.
So, they essentially became the best portable storage and scavenging tools.
When Kars finally managed to find a corner to leave the chambermaid and returned to the room breathless, everything had drastically changed.
If, when the window was first opened and sunlight streamed in, the room shone with resplendent opulence, now it looked like a room that had been festively licked by ten thousand dogs.
The shelves that once displayed precious collections were now empty; even the golden frames decorating the shelves had been ruthlessly pried away.
There were rough and uneven marks all over the place, just like a shattered vase.
“Heavens, what have you done?” Kars unbelievingly ruffled his own hair, finding the scene unfolding before his eyes thought-provokingly strange.
All the gold, and the large boxes in the corner, which used to hold much more, were all gone!
