Chapter 48 - 48 48 The Peaceful Small Town
48: Chapter 48: The Peaceful Small Town 48: Chapter 48: The Peaceful Small Town After understanding the situation, Violet returned to the small town the next day with Kars and Grian.
Despite the town currently being without a mayor, everything continued to run normally: the guards stood at the gates with their weapons, the tax officer walked the streets with his box.
Within the box were the tools he used to weigh gold coins.
He was an exacting person who was extremely meticulous.
Each gold coin had to have the exact weight it was meant to have.
If the weight was off, the shopkeeper had to cut out the extra powder from the coins and hand it in.
Everyone in the town lived on as usual that day, until they saw Violet.
The mercenaries were slaughtered and humiliated right in front of Black Crow Castle, and that was also where the mayor had disappeared.
All the clues pointed towards Violet.
Other than her, no one else had such power.
When the townspeople saw Violet enter, they whispered amongst themselves, referring to her derogatorily as a butcher or witch.
Firstly, it was because Violet had killed so many mercenaries without hesitation, some of whom had even held their weddings in town.
On the other hand, she had summoned numerous Undead Puppets during the fight.
To the ordinary folks, magic was a terrifying thing.
It was too powerful and uncontrollable.
A ‘bad tool’ that could swallow its master whole at any time.
Those with magical powers were always ostracized by ordinary people.
Even if someone’s only magical power was healing, people would still not believe in the good it could do unless it was a matter of life or death.
Only the mercenaries who constantly treaded the line between life and death accepted magic.
Violet lifted her own chin, completely disregarding the whispers surrounding her.
In her view, it didn’t matter how these people reacted.
Even if they stared at her, spat on the ground in disgust, and Grian put his hand on the hilt of his new sword, Violet still gave him a warning look indicating he should not act rashly.
She didn’t want to give the impression of a confrontational figure in this town.
As for the people, she lifted up the corners of her mouth, she had her own plan.
The Mercenary Guild was located not far from the entrance of the town, second only in size to the Town Hall.
As Violet approached the front gate, Villes happened to be leaving.
“What are you doing here?” Violet blurted out almost unconsciously.
Villes was a Glorious Noble, and would surely have his own tasks when he left.
Violet thought that apart from signing a contract with her, he had nothing else to do.
But here he was.
This came as quite a shock to Violet.
Given his status, he could be anywhere, but he should never be here.
This was a place where poor people went.
And the poor people were like Violet, employing almost four or five hundred mercenaries who had mouths to feed.
She had to come here and take assignments from this Mercenary Guild to earn enough money.
The butler who followed Villes out of the door attracted Violet’s attention.
In her memory, the butler seldom appeared, except for when he personally delivered the gold coins for the Black Crow Castle exploration.
Violet was certain that this old man was the actual manager of the Mercenary Guild.
His stepping out looked more like he was personally sending Villes off.
Given Villes’ status, it was obvious that the old man knew his identity.
So the answer was clear.
Violet pretty much knew what it was.
The covert owner of this Mercenary Guild might be the Glorious Noble to which Villes belonged, and that was why he received such special treatment when he came here.
With this realization, Violet chuckled, held her hands behind her back and said, “I didn’t expect you to be so powerful.”
At this moment, Villes, who was hesitating between speaking and remaining silent, finally settled down.
Everyone here was smart and when everyone understood what was going on, there was no need to spell it out.
Villes had his own tasks to complete.
He hemmed and hawed, then, as he climbed onto his horse, he took off his hat.
“I think we’ll meet again,” he said, smiling.
After that, he left in a hurry.
Violet looked puzzled as she watched his retreating figure, not fully grasping his meaning.
However, from this guy’s words, at least she clearly understood one thing.
That message was that she had caught this guy’s attention.
Could it be that soon after she arrived in this world, she would encounter such a strange thing?
Violet lifted up the corners of her mouth sardonically.
She certainly did not want to engage in a love affair involving vampires, especially since it was with a man.
Perhaps, it was time for her to find a girlfriend?
Deep down, Violet was still fond of women, men were definitely out of the question!
She sighed helplessly and finally concealed her emotions.
But, the butler who had been standing at the gate the whole time was drawn to her indications of discomfort.
With his ample life experience, as he observed Violet gaze after his master’s departing figure, his mind theorized many possibilities.
“Just more tiresome affairs of the heart,” he thought, mistaking Violet’s emotions as longing and melancholy.
If Violet heard his thoughts, she would surely spit out.
“What I like are women!
They have to be pretty and adorable young girls!” This is what she was yelling in her mind.
Though, neither one of them spoke their mind in words.
After all, neither Violet nor the butler could bring themselves to express these things.
In the end, it was the elderly butler with ‘umpteen experience’ who broke the silence and slightly awkward atmosphere.
He cleared his throat, feigning to freshen his voice and said, “So Captain Violet, I assume you must have some important business to discuss since you came to the Mercenary Guild?”
“Yes…
that’s right.” Saying this, she glanced around.
The townspeople were staring at her as though she were a monster.
If observed for too long, anyone would feel uncomfortable.
The elderly butler quickly noticed this, he straightened up, took a look around and detected the tense atmosphere in the air.
