Bounty Mercenary Group -
Chapter 39 - 39 39 Nobility
39: Chapter 39: Nobility 39: Chapter 39: Nobility After waiting several days, the town mayor, in a carriage driven by his servant, made his way through the dense forest to the front gate of Black Crow Castle.
He strutted around like a pompous rooster, mimicking the mannerisms and airs of nobility as though surveying his own domain.
Although he was not a noble himself, his clumsy impersonation came off as a jester’s trick, yet he seemed unbothered by that.
His arrival threw many into a state of uncertainty.
Workers stopped what they were doing, turned their heads, and watched his every move.
This fellow exited the carriage, dismissively glanced around at those who were looking his way, and then walked straight into the castle.
Combining the uncouthness of a merchant with the pretentiousness of nobility, his demeanor made everyone around him feel disgusted.
No one stopped him.
This was an order given by Violet that no one should obstruct him and this fellow should be let in.
She had found the perfect tough character to deal with him, as long as he dared to show up.
A low-heading mercenary brushed past him.
At that moment, he suddenly reached out and grabbed the mercenary’s collar.
“Are you from the Bronze Shield Mercenary Corps Group?” He raised his eyebrows and asked with a smile on his face.
The smirk, however, gave a slightly creepy vibe.
The mercenary he had grabbed spat onto the ground, shrugged off his hand, and walked away.
Here in this forest which was the mercenaries’ turf, without any guards trailing behind, no one would take any notice of him.
Even if they offended him, they could just avoid going back to the village.
The town mayor, who was used to behaving rudely, was shocked as he watched the mercenary departing after shaking off his hand, feeling insulted.
He straightened his clothes and loudly began to question the surrounding people after watching the retreating figure of the mercenary.
“Who among you is from the Bronze Shield Mercenary Corps Group?
Hand over your leader.” As he said so, he pulled out the IOU written by Violet.
To a mercenary, reputation is everything.
The mayor understood this to some extent.
That’s why he dared to come here alone, without bringing a single guard.
None of those surrounding him responded, when out of nowhere Villes appeared, moving elegantly in the smooth gait of a noble, he made his way to the mayor.
In terms of appearance, manners, and conversation, Villes managed to regain some dignity compared to the treatment he had received from Violet.
His appearance clearly intimidated the mayor, who realized that after all, he was nothing more than a boastful small-town mayor, with no dignity to speak of in front of real nobility.
Even though one of his ancestors was a viscount, the title was not hereditary and when he died, his descendants could not inherit the honour.
His current position was achieved through years of managing farms and mills.
To the true nobility, he was just a commoner.
Perhaps he could lord over the regular folk with his mayor’s status, but before genuine nobility, even he had to bow and pay respect!
And this was just the beginning.
Villes was a head taller than him, so when he stood in front of the mayor, he looked down on him.
Then, Villes extended his right hand, on his right index finger was a ring engraved with the Roxbury Family emblem, the emblem of the Glorious Noble.
The emblem indicated his identity.
If the mayor was not a noble, then if he did not abase himself, Villes could accuse him of treason.
Facing this situation, the mayor could no longer hide his fear.
Although he couldn’t understand the significance of the emblem on the ring, he knew that the ring emanating a dark golden glow was not something that an ordinary person could afford.
In respect to the wealth, he took off his hat.
Just based on this ring, he could purchase the mills he operated.
“May I ask who you are…” He was cautious in his choice of words, as he carefully stepped back.
At this moment, he felt like crying out of frustration.
He was only here to collect a debt, how did he end up encountering a nobleman?
If he was indeed a nobleman, then his plans for today were surely ruined.
At this moment, Villes smirked, looking contemptuously at this man in front of him, and withdrew his hand.
“Ignorant idiot, standing before you is a member of the Roxbury Family, the owner of the Black Crow Castle.
Have you forgotten that this has always been the territory of the Glorious Noble?”
With gritted teeth and elegant diction, Villes berated the mayor from head to toe.
Before taking office, a mayor would usually hand over this jurisdiction to his successor in a clear manner.
However, his own appointment to office was rushed because the previous mayor died suddenly, providing him with this opportunity.
If he wanted to understand the full history of this terrain, he would have to search for information and clues amongst the mountain of documents.
That was an impossible task for him, so after coming to this town, he didn’t bother going through those documents.
So, he wasn’t very sure whether this territory belonged to a particular noble or not.
Not to mention, this was the territory of a Glorious Noble who had retired from public view for centuries!
He wiped the cold sweat off his forehead, wishing he could go back and swallow all that literature if it could help him remember.
Though Villes’s sharp and caustic tirade had not ended, the ever-obsequious mayor finally lost his patience.
He was, after all, an official of the Empire, not a dog of the Glorious Noble, and they had no right to stop him from reclaiming his loan, right?
So, at that moment, he boldly took out the contract in his hand, handed it to Villes, and declared in stuttering yet determined words, “I am here to collect my debt.”
When that happened, Villes looked at him deeply, took his contract, and without hesitation, in front of the mayor, tore up the contract threatening Violet.
At that moment, the always enduring mayor could no longer suppress his emotions, his eyes turning red.
