Bounty Mercenary Group -
Chapter 37 - 37 37 Trap
37: Chapter 37: Trap 37: Chapter 37: Trap After a display of feigned mystery, Violet shook her head but said nothing, then led the way towards Black Crow Castle.
She walked ahead, giving Villes no time to think, obliging him to follow her pace while pondering.
In this situation, trying to remain on guard for magical beasts appearing from all directions, following Violet and maintaining his thoughts was exceedingly difficult.
Even when he tried to organize his thoughts, trying to find useful information within, he found himself needing three minutes for what usually took a minute to think.
Moreover, this didn’t account for the instances where he had to interrupt his train of thought to heighten his alertness due to some noise, thus he never really entered his proper state of thinking.
But he couldn’t feel like giving up on thinking because of this.
This only provoked Villes’s endless dreaming, causing him to utterly immerse himself, as if everything should occur just like this.
What did she want to say?
What was she thinking about, and why did she ultimately choose to remain silent?
Why, indeed?
These countless questions were constantly circling in his mind, making him focus on Violet’s retreating figure, unable to think about anything else.
Violet, on the other hand, casually strolled along at the head of the group, her hands behind her back.
Villes didn’t realize, that him falling into this state was actually the result Violet wanted!
She wanted to lure Villes into this endless cycle of thought, unable to find a way to break free, thereby blinding him.
Keeping a logical person clear-minded is easy because they are constantly thinking, almost as a habit.
Without external interference, causing a person accustomed to staying clear-minded to fall into a dazed state requires nothing more than manipulation of the thoughts in their head.
In reality, Villes had unknowingly walked right into Violet’s trap, thinking himself to be intelligent and yet, in this regard, he was being exploited by her.
Once Violet understood what kind of person Villes was, she knew exactly how to deal with him.
And this could always make one lose their sanity, forgetting what they should be doing.
Violet didn’t want this guy following her to harbor any inappropriate thoughts, or to ponder over the signed scroll, which is why she acted the way she did.
She had noticed Villes’s hesitant expression when he saw her signature, as well as his deep thought.
To distract him, she troubled him with an insignificant and meaningless problem.
That was what she did, and so far, everything was proceeding smoothly.
This state lingered until they reached the gates of Black Crow Castle when his curiosity could no longer be contained.
Villes quickened his steps, stopping Violet by her shoulders, questioning.
“Just what were you thinking about?” He blurted out the question that had been bothering him.
However, Violet merely laughed, her eyes spinning with a sly glint, going off on a tangent with some made-up excuse.
“I was wondering, what would happen if we put a Holy Magic Bomb on an Undead’s rib.”
“Huh?
That’s it?
…..”
Villes stood with his mouth agape, unsure of how to deal with this situation in front of him.
Could the problem that’s been bothering him be this simple?
Mounting a Holy Magic Bomb onto an Undead’s rib, what could ever happen!
Obviously, it would explode instantly, leaving not even a speck of bone left, and the soul fire would be purified to heaven!
This didn’t sound like an explanation, rather like an excuse that she just happened to think of, similar to pondering just what is in the Holy Communion.
Everyone knows that it’s just a piece of bread and a sip of red wine that’s not even enough to quench one’s thirst, but preachers insist on saying it’s the blood and flesh of God.
In short, they said so, regardless of whether you believe or not, that’s what they said.
If you believe it, your mind would be at ease, then you would feel deeply lost.
But if you don’t believe it, anxiety would only double.
Why would she deceive him with such a meaningless matter?
More questions surged in his mind; he took a deep breath of the forest air he hadn’t breathed for a long time.
In this situation, the only one who could provide the answer was himself, there were no other options.
This was a thinking trap, and Villes only came to this realization now.
His gaze followed Violet’s fading figure, expressing an emotion too profound and indescribable to be named.
Would he chase after her and ask once more, what was she thinking about?
The thing that’s been bothering him, the thing that’s been causing his endless puzzlement, still didn’t manage to find a satisfactory answer in the end.
Perhaps, the only solution to this problem is to avoid it.
The Black Crow Castle, which they had unknowingly approached, no longer looked deserted like before, instead, it appeared bustling and lively.
Countless mercenaries patrolled between the castle and its periphery, ensuring the area’s safety.
The Laborer Guild workers sat in baskets, suspended on the outer part of the castle walls by ropes, leisurely repairing the flaws on the walls.
The gaps in the stones on the walls were filled, and a new layer of grey mud was smeared onto the collapsed fracture, which looked like a bad painting.
Of course, these were just small, superficial repairs, and lots of work was still required to ensure the wall’s sturdiness.
Upon the requirements of both defense and stability, the engineers built four triangular supports close to the castle walls.
This was done to allocate the pressure on the walls and prevent any new weight from being added, and the steep triangle wasn’t something that ordinary people could climb.
The ruined scene was transformed because of the people’s presence.
