Bounty Mercenary Group
Chapter 30 - 30 30 Night Talk

30: Chapter 30: Night Talk 30: Chapter 30: Night Talk “I know this is not enough money,” the servant said as he slid the money on the table towards Grian.

On the contrary, Grian, pipe in mouth and lost in thought, watched the servant, his mind already piecing together the puzzle.

He had a decent idea of what this servant was trying to do.

He looked at the servant’s simple but grimy face, pondered a bit, and finally voiced his conjecture.

“So, you want to kill the Town Leader?” he blurted out coldly.

The servant didn’t expect that this old man in front of him would have such sharp observational skills.

His expression froze for a few seconds, but then he laughed.

Indeed, it was obvious what he wanted to do.

He wanted to kill that fat pig.

The cunning deceitful Town Leader sleeping with his fiancée was nothing but a fat pig in his eyes!

Moreover, the servant believed that the information he had would not be turned down by the man in front of him.

Although he was fully aware that, from a monetary viewpoint, the money was indeed not enough to do anything.

However, it was not the amount of money that mattered, but the sincerity it represented.

His actual trump card was his knowledge of every step the Town Leader was planning against Violet.

A Town Leader’s head couldn’t just be bought with a dozen Gold Coins.

But when the Town Leader attempts to kill a mercenary, even with no money on the table, those mercenaries would fight back rather than surrender quietly.

Though, they did need money to maintain their innocent appearance to the world, money that would be used to keep some people quiet after the killing.

With that in mind, the servant said, “But I know that the Town Leader is plotting against your Captain, Violet.

You probably aren’t aware of that, are you?”

This caught Grian off guard, causing him to lower his pipe and stud the servant intently.

He rapped on the table, saying,

“Then you’d better tell me everything in detail.”

The servant nodded, then proceeded to share every piece of information he had with Grian.

His anger had rendered him mindless, making him forget that this knowledge was his most valuable asset.

From a mercenary’s perspective, Grian could have refused the servant’s request upon hearing the information.

There was no need for him to take this risk.

As long as he had a weapon and strength, he could find food anywhere; there was no worry in that.

But after hearing the servant’s story, Grian fell silent.

He didn’t respond one way or the other.

He didn’t seem to agree with the servant’s request or refuse it.

He just stayed silent.

The servant’s face revealed a mix of anger and a glimmer of hope.

He eagerly awaited Grian’s response, hoping that he would accept the task.

Knowing the full story, Grian chose to ignore the servant.

He drifted into deep thought, knowing Violet, who was forever inscrutable.

It was impossible for her to carry out such a task.

The task was a complete contradiction to her character, yet no matter how deeply he thought, he couldn’t figure out why it was so.

Perhaps this was just Violet.

He sighed heavily in resignation and pushed the Gold Coins back across the table.

“Why?

Are you refusing?!” The servant roared, unable to control his emotions after seeing Grian’s actions.

He didn’t understand why this man was refusing him!

However, Grian raised his finger, motioning him to calm down.

Once the servant had still down and returned to his seat, Grian picked up his cup of now-cold water and drained the contents.

After clearing his throat, he said, “I don’t have the authority to accept such a task.”

His face was very serious because he knew his position!

No matter how unjustly the servant had been treated, he couldn’t risk his life or others’ lives out of mere sympathy.

This wasn’t about him alone; it involved Violet’s life and the lives of the others.

So, it was Violet, and only Violet, who could make the decision.

Though he was certain that Violet would not let the Town Leader go after knowing about all this, that decision would be hers to make and had nothing to do with him.

That was why he had returned the money to this unlucky servant.

Should Violet ask him after learning about this plan if he had accepted the bribe,

He knew that the acceptance of the money would mean he’d made a decision without Violet’s consent, wouldn’t it?

Although the Gold Coins on the table were not much, merely a day’s outing’s expense for a noble, these Coins held great significance for the servant.

The same dozen Gold Coins had different values for different people.

For a beggar on the brink of starvation, it was hope.

For the servant, it was his future.

So after taking everything into consideration, Grian’s decision was indeed very wise.

Then he coughed and changed the topic, “So, would you like to join the Bronze Shield Mercenary Corps Group?”

This question disrupted the servant’s train of thought.

All he wanted right now was to kill the Town Leader.

But once the Town Leader was dead, it would mean that he would be unemployed.

How would he, penniless as he would be then, survive in this world?

He hadn’t thought about the long-term outcome, all he wanted was to kill the Town Leader.

Once the Town Leader was dead, what did his own life matter?

If he could exchange his worthless life for the Town Leader’s, it would be worth it!

But Grian’s invitation was quite unexpected.

He knew who he was, just a humble farmer, without much strength or combat experience, didn’t know how to use any weapons.

Even if he wanted to join some mercenary group, nobody would want him.

Moreover, this was an invitation from the Bronze Shield.

“Join the Bronze Shield?…

But…

I…” he stammered.

Grian nodded seriously.

“Apart from farming and doing chores, I can’t do anything else.” The hopeful servant said disheartened, and Grian believed him.

He was just a common farmer, it would indeed be strange if he could fight.

“Black Crow Castle is a big castle.

Not every mercenary is willing to do cleaning chores,” Grian said sincerely.
