Chapter 70: The Seer’s Secret
Jace’s heart hammered against his ribs as he burst through Talia’s cottage door. The small living room stood empty, flipped chairs and scattered books telling a story of struggle. Her scent lingered—fear mixed with something else he couldn’t name. "Talia!" he called out, knowing she wouldn’t answer.
He dropped to his knees beside her bed, pressing his nose to the cloth. The trail was fresh, maybe an hour old. But underneath her familiar vanilla smell was something that made his wolf growl with recognition.
Celeste. Jace shifted partly, letting his enhanced senses guide him through the forest. The scent trail went away from the estate, toward the old hunting grounds where pack members rarely ventured. With each step, his anger grew hotter. If Celeste had hurt Talia to get to Liana, he would tear her apart. The abandoned cabin emerged through the trees like a nightmare from childhood stories. Broken windows stared down at him like hollow eyes. Smoke curled from the chimney, and words drifted through the night air. Jace crept closer, every muscle coiled for attack. Through a gap in the wooden boards, he could see inside. Talia sat in a chair near the fireplace, her red curls catching the orange light. She looked unhurt, but her hands were tied behind her back. Celeste paced in front of her, silver knife shining in her grip. "You failed me," Celeste hissed. "Your visions were supposed to keep her away from my brothers. Instead, she’s connected to all three." Jace’s blood turned to ice. Your dreams were supposed to... "I tried," Talia whispered, tears streaming down her freckled cheeks. "But I couldn’t let her get hurt. She’s my best friend." "Best friend?" Celeste laughed, the sound sharp as breaking glass. "She’s your ticket to power, just like she was mine.
Or have you forgotten what we planned?" What we planned. The words hit Jace like a physical blow. His mind raced, linking pieces he’d never wanted to see. Talia’s convenient dreams. Her warnings that always came just a little too late. The way she always seemed to know exactly where to find them during dangerous moments. "I never wanted anyone to die," Talia sobbed. "When I started having real dreams, not just the ones you sent me, I saw the truth. I saw what would happen if we kept going." Celeste grabbed Talia’s chin, causing her to look up. "Real visions? You’re just a half-blood witch like me. We don’t get real images." "We do if we’re connected to someone with royal blood," Talia whispered. "Being near Liana woke something in me. Something real." Jace felt like the ground had dropped out from under him. Talia wasn’t just working with Celeste—she was her sister. Both of them had been playing a game he’d never even known existed. "It doesn’t matter now," Celeste said, raising the silver blade. "You’ve outlived your usefulness. Once you’re gone, I’ll tell everyone the hybrids killed you. Liana will be distraught, distracted. Easy prey." Jace couldn’t wait any longer. He burst through the cabin door, shifting mid-leap into his wolf form. Celeste spun around, silver knife flashing, but Jace was faster.
He tackled her to the ground, careful not to let the blade hit his skin. "Jace, stop!" Talia screamed. He changed back to human form, pinning Celeste beneath him. "Give me one reason why I shouldn’t end this right now." "Because she’s telling the truth!" Talia’s voice cracked with panic. "I’m having a real vision. Right now." Jace looked over at his best friend’s sister, seeing her eyes rolled back, her body shaking. When she spoke again, her voice sounded different—older, more faraway. "I see them coming. Hundreds of hybrid creatures, all holding silver weapons. They’re surrounding the Conclave grounds. Every Alpha who came here tonight will die unless we stop them." Celeste stopped fighting beneath Jace.
"That’s impossible. My contact said they only had a few dozen men." "Your contact lied to you," Talia gasped, her eyes returning to normal. "They’re using the Conclave as bait. They want to kill every Alpha in North America in one night." Jace’s mind reeled. "How do you know this?" Talia looked down at her bound hands. "Because I can see it happening. All the Alphas met in the main pavilion for the opening ceremony. The hybrids striking from every direction. Silver arrows falling down like deadly rain. Everyone screaming, dying..." "When?" Jace demanded. "Now," Talia whispered. "It’s happening right now." Through the cabin windows, Jace could hear faraway howls echoing across the forest. Not the ceremonial howls of greeting between pack friends. These were sounds of terror and pain. He jumped to his feet, cutting Talia’s ropes with his claws. "We have to get back to the estate." "Wait," Celeste said, trying to sit up. "If what she’s seeing is true, going back is death. Those things are meant to kill our kind." "Then what do you suggest?" Jace snarled. "Let everyone die?" Talia stood on shaky legs, rubbing circulation back into her wrists. "There’s another way. In my vision, I saw something else. The hybrids have a weakness—they’re being managed by a master. Kill the boss, and they’ll turn on each other." "Where is this master?" Jace asked. "Hidden beneath the old mining tunnels you found," Talia said. "But he’s not alone.
He has the leftover Alphas who wouldn’t come to the Conclave. They’re imprisoned down there, being drained of their life force to power his army." Celeste’s face went pale. "My father’s missing. He never showed up for the Conclave." "Because he’s trapped," Talia confirmed. "Along with six other Alphas. If we don’t free them soon, they’ll die, and the master will have enough power to make a thousand more hybrids." Jace felt the weight of impossible options crushing down on him. Save the Alphas at the Conclave, or save the trapped Alphas who were being used as batteries for their enemy’s army. He couldn’t do both. "There’s one more thing," Talia said quietly. "In my vision, I saw who the master really is. Who’s been arranging all of this." "Who?" Jace and Celeste asked together. Talia’s eyes filled with fresh tears. "Elder Mira. She’s been playing both sides from the beginning. She’s the one who taught me how to fake dreams. She’s the one who told Celeste about the witch DNA we share. And she’s the one who’s been feeding information to the hybrids."
The howls outside grew louder, more desperate. Smoke began to rise through the trees toward the house. "We’re running out of time," Jace said, his voice tight with fear. "If Mira’s the master, then Rowan—" "Is walking into a trap," Talia finished. "She’s with him right now, allegedly activating the ward stones. But really, she’s planning the final ritual that will drain every wolf’s life force for miles around." Jace grabbed both girls by the shoulders. "Then we split up. Celeste, you go warn the Conclave if you can. Tell them to flee or fight back. Talia, you’re coming with me to stop Mira." "I’m not leaving my sister," Celeste said strongly. "Sister?" Jace stared between them. "Half-sister," Talia amended. "Same witch mother, different men. Celeste’s father was the Beta. Mine was just a pack warrior who died when I was small." The ground beneath their feet suddenly shook. Through the house windows, they could see a strange red glow spreading across the sky above the estate. "The ritual’s starting," Talia whispered.
"If we don’t stop it in the next hour, everyone we love will be dead." Jace felt his wolf roaring for action, for blood, for the chance to protect his pack. But looking at these two girls—enemies who had become reluctant allies—he realized the biggest battle was just starting. And somewhere in the Sacred Grove, Rowan was about to learn that the woman he trusted most in the world was preparing to kill him.
