Chapter 69: IN BED AND DRUGGED

{"Drugs are a bet with the mind." }

Fennel had declared a challenge. The damn bastard had declared a challenge for the right to mate with my mate. Rage coiled in my chest, hot and uncontrollable, but before I could react, Freyr stood up. With calm, calculated steps, he walked over and stopped just inches from me, his eyes sharp with amusement.

"This is the bait we needed," he said smoothly. "Why are you reacting when he just walked right into the trap?"

I clenched my fists. Trap or not, this was personal.

Tor growled beside me, his body thrumming with barely restrained fury. "Fennel is testing my patience," he snarled.

"You need to calm down," I scolded, narrowing my eyes at him.

Then, without missing a beat, I turned to Flora. "Go back and announce that the winner of the challenge will have to prove his worth..." I let my words linger for dramatic effect before smirking. "...by awakening my wolf."

A beat of silence.

Then General Tiger burst into roaring laughter, nearly doubling over. Spark winked at Tor, while Wave grinned like a fool, shaking his head in sheer amusement. Oh, this was going to be fun.

Spark was the first to speak up. "It would be best if Tor stayed away from the training ground," he suggested.

After careful planning, we agreed. Dinner at home, an early night, and no unnecessary risks.

The next morning, as planned, Tor left for the pack office while the rest of us made our way to the training grounds.

The place was packed. Every inch of space was filled with pack members, their excitement buzzing in the air like static before a storm. A deafening cheer erupted as we walked in. I barely reacted. Instead, I sat with an air of indifference, my expression carefully bored as the challenge began.

One by one, shifter wolves stepped forward to face Fennel. And one by one, they fell.

Not a bead of sweat touched his brow as he dismantled every opponent with effortless ease. It wasn’t just skill, it was something else. Something unnatural.

"Are you watching this?" Wave muttered under his breath.

Spark, his sharp gaze fixed on Fennel, gave a slow nod. "You were right," he whispered. "Fennel is compromised."

Minutes turned into hours. More shifters entered the ring, only to be thrown out just as quickly.

By the time three hours had passed, no one remained to challenge him.

And still, he stood in the center of the training ground, a smug smirk pulling at his lips.

My jaw clenched. I forced a slow breath through my nose and curved my lips into a deliberate smile, one that never reached my eyes.

Fennel caught it. I could see the flicker of amusement in his gaze, the way he knew this was getting under my skin.

The moment I stood, the entire training ground fell into a hush. Then, he spoke.

"Freyr, my queen," Fennel announced, his voice ringing through the silence. "I am here for you. Ready to be your mate."

"Fennel Colbat, your strength is unmatched, but you have yet to win the challenge," General Tiger declared, his deep voice carrying across the training grounds.

A roar of approval erupted from the Bay Shifter pack, their cheers shaking the earth beneath us.

"But since you are exhausted today," Tiger continued, "I suggest we do it tomorrow."

"No way," Fennel snapped, his voice dark with frustration. He straightened, shoulders squared, eyes gleaming with dangerous intent. "I plan to take my Queen home today and mate with her." His growl rumbled through the air, sending a ripple of unease through the gathered pack members.

I didn’t hesitate. Rising to my feet, I met his gaze head-on and spoke, my voice cutting through the noise like a blade.

"The challenge was clear. The person I will mate with must awaken my wolf." My words rang through the training ground, silencing the murmurs. "How can I take a mate who cannot even stir my beast?"

Fennel’s nostrils flared. He let out a harsh breath, then huffed in frustration, his ego bruised. Without another word, he turned and motioned for General Tiger to step down from the raised dais where we sat.

And that was when Kayne spoke.

Something shifted inside me, an eerie pull in my chest, and then his voice—deep, ancient, warning, whispered through my mind.

"Freyr, something is wrong with Tor’s beast. Gale is unstable."

My blood ran cold. What? My breath caught, my pulse thudding in my ears.

"You need to go. Now."

I turned sharply to Spark, leaning in just enough to whisper. "Tor is in danger." His eyes widened in instant understanding. He gave a quick nod, ready to move.

But before we could take a step—

"Where do you think you’re going?" Fennel’s voice rang out like a whip, laced with suspicion and challenge. His glare locked onto me, and in that moment, I knew—this wasn’t just about the challenge anymore but the desire to possess.

"What is the hurry, Fennel?" Flora’s voice rang out, calm yet firm. Good. Keep him distracted.

"Freyr needs rest," she continued, her tone carrying just the right amount of authority. "And it would be best if Alpha Tor were present for the final challenge between you and General Tiger. Tomorrow morning would be an ideal time."

A hush settled over the training ground as the words sank in. Flora’s next statement hit even harder.

"Besides, the Colbat family isn’t even present. Shouldn’t they witness your victory?"

Fennel’s reaction was immediate. His eyes flickered with something, fear, and then It was gone in an instant, masked behind a neutral expression, but I saw it. His hands clenched at his sides, the tendons in his forearms tightening.

He gave a stiff nod. "Fine." That was all we needed. We rushed out of the training grounds, moving with urgency. As we walked, Wave turned to the enforcers.

"Where is Alpha Tor?"

"He left the office an hour ago and went home," one responded. Home. A chill ran down my spine. Without another word, we moved with speed, each of us fueled by the gnawing sense that something was wrong. By the time we reached Tor’s home, the scent hit me like a punch to the gut. The Colbat Triplets. Flora cursed under her breath. We stormed inside, following their scent like a trail of venom. My heart pounded as I pushed open the door to Tor’s bedroom.

And then, I froze.

Tor lay sprawled on the bed, asleep. The triplets surrounded him, one nestled on each side and one draped over his chest.

I staggered back, my body locking up as shock and fury warred inside me.

"What the hell—?" Spark cursed.

General Tiger groaned in frustration, rubbing a hand down his face. Flora’s jaw had dropped, speechless for the first time in ages. But it was Wave who reacted the strongest. His nostrils flared, his hands shaking with rage as he spat out the bitter truth.

"We’ve been fooled."

I turned and fled.

Kayne roared in my head, his fury merging with mine until my vision blurred with rage. The heat of betrayal burned through me like wildfire, my breaths coming out in short, sharp gasps.

By the time I stumbled out of the house, I was hissing with fury. I moved blindly, not knowing where I was going, only that I needed out.

Then a hand reached out, grabbing my arm.

I spun; my claws halfway unsheathed, ready to attack.

"Wait!"

It was General Tiger.

He took a step back, his hands raised in surrender. His eyes searched mine, reading the storm raging within me.

I shook my head violently, ready to bolt.

"There is nothing to wait for!" I snapped.

"You must trust your mate." Tiger’s voice was firm, but not unkind. "Gale would never let anyone touch Tor. There has to be an explanation."

I let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "What damn explanation could he possibly give?" I yelled, my voice cracking with rage.

Tiger lowered his voice, trying to reach me through the haze of my fury.

"I don’t know what happened," he admitted, "but think about it—this was planned. The Colbat family set this up. If you had stayed longer in that room, you would have smelled it—the Farka toxin. It’s an ancient toxin found in Sagstone Mountain that is filled with gold. The toxin is rare and hard to find and I wonder how they got hold of it. But we shall deal with that later on, for no,w we need to awaken Tor."

I froze.

"Frakka?" I echoed my voice barely a whisper.

"Yes," Tiger nodded. "It can cause paralysis in a shifter wolf. But here’s the thing, it only works in high doses. Which means the triplets had to work hard to make sure Tor was completely intoxicated, too weak to fight back."

The ground beneath me seemed to tilt.

"So... he didn’t—?" I whispered in fear.

"No," Tiger cut in, shaking his head. "Tor never willingly let them near him. He was drugged, Freyr. And if you leave him now, he stays under their control. You need to clear your mind and help your mate"

A shudder ran through me. "Then how do I wake him up? ?" I demanded, already knowing the answer.

Tiger met my gaze, eyes dark with certainty. "You go back and use your mating bond to awaken Alpha Tor and get him out of that state. You need to protect your mate and not run away just because of a misunderstanding" Tiger asserted.
