Chapter 66: COLBAT’S HYBRID BEAST

{"’There is no greater glory than love, nor any greater punishment than jealousy. "}

Two days later, all hell broke loose, and we chose to gather in the Royal Garden to deliberate on how to respond to the reaction of the pack since Freyr appeared. Aside from collapsing into bed at night, I had barely gotten a moment alone with Freyr, exhausted from the constant planning and pretending. Those were the only times I could hold him, bury my face in his neck, and pretend, even for a moment, that we weren’t in the middle of a damn masquerade.

That peace, however brief, was about to be shattered.

Wave approached us with a grim expression. "There’s a dinner planned by the Bay Shifter Council. The whole pack is on edge after hearing that a distant relative from the Gale family has arrived. Word is spreading fast that she needs guidance to awaken her wolf."

I exhaled sharply, already irritated. "Wonderful."

Freyr, of course, looked completely at ease, his expression calm as ever. "The Kayne Stone’s barrier is holding," he reassured me. "No one will sense my true nature or my beast."

That wasn’t what was bothering me.

The pack had been in a frenzy since his arrival. I had never seen so much useless buzzing from my male and female wolves whispering with curiosity, trying to catch a glimpse of "Freya." Even the enforcer guards were suddenly vying for shifts at the Alpha’s house, eager for a chance to be near him.

It infuriated me. And Freyr knew it. He stood beside me, a small, knowing smile curving his lips, his eyes shimmering with mischief. His disguise was so perfect it was almost unfair—breathtaking, ethereal, and completely unattainable. I clenched my jaw, seething as I watched another enforcer sneak a glance his way.

"Why the hell are you smiling?" I snapped at him.

Freyr turned to me, utterly unbothered. "Because," he said smoothly, "your possessive nature is making me giddy and happy."

I growled low in my throat, but that only made his grin widen.

Flora, who had been the unfortunate soul in charge of keeping everyone at bay, scowled at him. "It’s been absolute chaos. I’ve had to chase away half the pack."

Freyr chuckled, clearly enjoying himself, while I crossed my arms and tried not to explode.

Wave stepped forward, getting us back on track. "We need to leave for the dinner hall soon. The plan is to spend as little time as possible and answer as few questions as we can."

I let out a slow, frustrated breath. "I doubt I’ll be able to hold back," I muttered under my breath.

General Tiger placed a firm hand on my shoulder. "We’ll handle everything. Just bear with it."

Bear with it. Easier said than done when my mate looked like a damn celestial goddess, and my entire pack wanted to worship at his feet.

By the time we arrived, the place was already buzzing with energy. The moment we stepped in, the chatter dimmed, all eyes locking on "Freya."

I gritted my teeth, my beast restless beneath my skin, but I forced myself to move with controlled ease. Walking to the high table, I took my seat, "Freya," gracefully settling beside me on my right. Flora sat beside him while Spark, Wave, and General Tiger took their places on my left.

The hall fell into an eerie silence. Stares fixated on Freya, some filled with awe, others with blatant curiosity. I clenched my fists beneath the table, silently willing my beast to settle. He was mine. They had no right to look at him like that.

At the head of the gathering sat the Bay Shifter Council. Among them was Elder Mercury Bolt, the formidable elder of the Bay Shifter Pack and Wave’s mother. Next to her sat Blossom Sky, Lily Crest, and Crystal Astor, General Tiger’s mother. Their presence alone was enough to command respect, but it was Elder Mercury Bolt’s piercing gaze that held my attention.

I felt her power the moment she tried to read "Freya." Her energy brushed against him, seeking, probing, but his disguise held firm. A slow smile curved her lips, and instead of pressing further, she suddenly burst into laughter, shaking her head in disbelief.

Flora leaned in slightly, her voice barely above a whisper. "My mother is never easily fooled."

I exhaled sharply, my patience thinning. "How much longer must we be here?" I muttered.

Spark, ever the voice of reason, smirked. "We just arrived, brother."

I resisted the urge to curse.

Among the sea of murmurs and stolen glances, it was Blossom Sky who finally stood, her posture regal as she addressed the room. "Welcome, everyone." Her voice carried, commanding the attention of all. "Tonight, we gather in honor of our General, our Commanders, and those who have been granted favor and protection under Alpha Tor." **

A murmur of agreement rippled through the hall as she continued.

"Some among us have been betrayed, exposed, and endangered by those who chose to collude with outside forces. Yet, through the strength and leadership of our Alpha, they have been granted sanctuary." Her gaze swept across the room, lingering on me. "Tonight, we celebrate that favor and the blessing of having Alpha Tor lead our pack."

The room erupted into thunderous cheers. I remained still, my expression unreadable, but my fingers curled slightly into the fabric of my pants as I felt "Freya’s" gaze settle on me, amusement twinkling in his disguised eyes.

"Enjoying yourself?" I muttered under my breath. He only smiled, and I swore the glint in his eyes was more trouble than I was ready for.

Once the cheers died down, the room settled into an expectant hush.

Lily Crest stood, her gaze sharp as it flickered to "Freya." "It would be nice if our guest introduced herself."

A low growl rumbled through my mind link—Gale, my beast, was displeased. I could feel his possessiveness coil tightly inside me, barely restrained.

Across from me, "Freya" rose gracefully, his soft voice carrying over the room with an effortless command. "I am Freya Gale," he said, his expression perfectly composed. "I came to the Bay Shifter Pack upon hearing that Alpha Tor’s Lycan had awakened. Since my wolf remains dormant, I knew he would be the one to guide me in awakening mine."

Silence. Heavy and charged. Then, a voice broke through the quiet.

"Freya is a beauty," one shifter murmured in open admiration.

Another followed almost immediately. "Her voice is magical."

I clenched my fists beneath the table. My beast snarled in irritation, possessiveness roaring to life as I fought the primal urge to bare my fangs at them.

Across from me, "Freya"—no, Freyr—dared to smirk, a glint of mischief flashing in his eyes as he sat back down beside me. I exhaled sharply, jaw tight, and muttered under my breath, "This is going to be a long night."

Flora chuckled beside him. "I already sense trouble coming "

Flora chuckled beside him. "I already sense trouble coming."

And as if summoned by her words, the entrance doors swung open.

A hush fell over the room as Aqua Colbat’s younger sisters arrived. Born as triplets from a different mother and were named Dai, Dayra, Hali, and Isla, they moved with an air of quiet confidence, their presence immediately drawing attention. They were accompanied by their uncle, Fennel Colbat, a man known for his shrewd mind and ruthless tactics.

"Greetings, Alpha. Sorry, we are late," they chimed in unison, their voices melodic but eerily synchronized.

Flora snickered beside me while Wave let out a low growl, barely concealing his anger.

I gave the newcomers a stiff nod, watching as they moved toward the table set for the Bay Shifter Council members. Yet, even as they settled in, my focus remained locked on Fennel Colbat.

The way his eyes raked over "Freya" sent an uneasy chill down my spine.

And then it happened.

For the first time since walking into this damned hall, Freyr’s expression shifted. His face hardened, thunderous rage flashing across his usually amused features. His striking eyes darkened, glowing with a quiet, simmering fury.

What the hell is wrong? I pushed the words through our mind link, forcing my own emotions to stay level.

His response came sharp and immediate.

"That man, who just walked in, has Blood Stone Bugs embedded in his mind link. They are advanced, already fused with his wolf. He is no longer just a Shifter... He is something more. A hybrid—Vampire and Shifter Wolf."

A deadly silence stretched between us. I inhaled slowly, my beast roaring against my restraint.

A hybrid.

This dinner had just turned into something far more dangerous, and I stood up on my feet in shock, anger, and fury.I could feel the weight of the question hanging in the air before it was even fully out of the person’s mouth. The entire hall seemed to pause, waiting for my response. My eyes naturally shifted to Fennel again, the anger bubbling in my chest from the realization of what he was, and yet this question hit me like a punch to the gut. The pack wasn’t just curious about Freya’s presence, they were already eyeing her as a potential mate.

My first clenched under the table, a low growl building in my chest, but I forced it back down. This wasn’t the time.

The voice of the pack member who had spoken out echoed again. "Alpha, are you going to choose a mate for Freya? And if not, can we, the pack members, volunteer to be part of the people you would recommend as her mate?"

I couldn’t stop the anger from flashing in my eyes, but I controlled the urge to lash out. My gaze flicked to Frey to see his reaction, but he kept his expression composed, his lips twitching into a small, almost amused smile. But I knew it wasn’t amusement; it was something far darker. He was playing this game, too. The tension in the air thickened as I looked out across the pack.

"Mate?" The words escaped my mouth, and I could feel the way Gale rose in anger and possessiveness.
