Chapter 36: TROUBLE FOUND US

{"I can be changed by what happens to me. But I refuse to be reduced by it"}

The air in the room grew heavier when Qadira appeared, her expression a mixture of shock and guilt. Her lips parted slightly as the color drained from her face, and I knew instantly that she had been listening to our conversation.

"Ma, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop," she blurted out, her tone defensive as she stepped further into the room.

I leaned back in my chair, watching as she hesitated before lowering herself into the third empty seat next to us. Her eyes darted between me and Ma, lingering on me with a look that was far too curious for my liking.

Then she asked the question that made my jaw tighten. "So, Freyr, do you want to finish off our family, or what?"

I chuckled, though there was no humor in it. "It’s none of your business, Qadira," I replied, my tone clipped.

She huffed, crossing her arms and glaring at me. "It becomes my business when you start stirring trouble that could blow back on the rest of us."

Before I could fire back, she shifted her attention to Ma. "I only came here because I was hoping I’d find him," she said, gesturing toward me.

"Why?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

Her lips curved into a smirk that did not quite reach her eyes. "Because the royal guards have been busy running their mouths."

My stomach clenched as I leaned forward. "Go on."

"They were at the casino, drinking and gossiping," Qadira continued. "ApTheecond vampire Lord Marcel sent to spy on you just returned. According to him, you arrived at Hanka Island and then vanished into thin air. But here is the fun part, there was an unmistakable scent of a Lycan on the island. The spy stayed there all night searching for you, but you never came back."

My pulse quickened, but I kept my expression neutral.

Qadira gave a bitter laugh. "So, of course, he rushed back to Paradise Coven to report to Lord Marcel, who cursed up a storm and threw one of his famous tantrums."

"Why does this matter?" I asked, though my voice lacked conviction.

"Oh, it matters," Qadira said, leaning toward me. "Because when Aurora Jade failed to seduce you, Lord Marcel was so angry he nearly beat her to death. She barely survived, and the only reason she did was because Byron Marcel, Silvan, Cassius, and Desmond’s uncle, stepped in and saved her."

I clenched my fists as a growl rumbled low in my throat. "Those bastards," Ma cursed, her voice seething with rage.

Qadira leaned forward, her expression a mix of curiosity and disdain. "Aurora was shattered, Freyr," she said, her voice sharp but laced with something softer, pity, maybe. "The fact that you have been ignoring her has not helped. And you know as well as I do that Cassius has always lusted after her. Desmond, though... he is in love with her. Always has been. It is a mess."

She cursed under her breath and added, "The Marcel family is completely screwed up."

Her words hit me like a slap, and I cursed as I stood up, pacing the room to shake off the frustration building in my chest. Qadira did not flinch at my outburst; she simply crossed her arms and watched me, waiting for me to process.

Then she spoke again, her voice calmer but no less cutting. "Freyr, is it true? What you told Ma earlier—about the Lycan. Is he your mate?"

I stopped pacing and turned to face her. "Yes," I said simply, my voice firm and unwavering.

Qadira’s brow furrowed, and she pressed on. "Your long-life mate?"

I nodded. "I’ve never met a shifter like him," I admitted, my voice softening despite myself. "His power is unmatched. It is a cause for concern for the vampires."

Qadira’s gaze sharpened as she tilted her head. "Who’s stronger?" she asked. "You or him?"

I could not help the small smile that tugged at my lips. "I don’t know," I replied truthfully. "But I have felt his power. It is..." My voice trailed off as a flush crept up my neck, and I quickly looked away, trying to hide it.

Qadira caught on instantly. Her eyes widened slightly before narrowing with amusement. "Oh, Freyr," she drawled, a smirk forming on her lips. "That blush on your face says it all. This is not just any Lycan, is it? He is something else entirely, a force to reckon with."

I did not respond, but the memories betrayed me. The way he had pinned me down on the fur blankets, his strength and dominance undeniable, the way I had surrendered to him completely...

My face burned, and Qadira laughed softly, shaking her head. "You’re in deep," she said. "And by the looks of it, so is he. But Freyr, you have got to be careful. The Marcel family will not take this lying down, and neither will the coven. You have thrown yourself into a storm that could tear all of us apart."

I met her gaze, my resolve hardening. "I know," I said quietly. "But I am not walking away from him. Not now. Not ever."

Qadira sighed, leaning back in her chair. "As Ma stated you have our support."

"Thank you, Ma, thank you Qadira "I whispered appreciatively.

"That is what family should do" Qadira nodded.

"Do you think that that fate had planned for you and Alpha Tor to meet?" Ma whispered. "How is it that after all these years, he awakens, and you meet in Hanka Island?"

The silence in the room rose from Ma’s question and then I responded and informed them the way the magic voice from Hanka Island had spoken up.

"Finally, the ancient magic of Hanka Island has come alive. Took the two of you long enough. It was foretold that two powerful beings would come together, and unite to bring change. But this union will not come without the hardest hurdles of your life. Only love will conquer."

"What the fuck?" Qadira whispered.

"Watch your language child "Ma scolded her but I could tell she was more worried by the words that I had uttered.

I sighed deeply, the weight of my thoughts pressing heavily on me as I spoke. "I know that Pa’s dream of uniting the two breeds of Paradise Bay led to his death, Ma," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "And I am not even sure if the words of Hanka Island’s voice will come true. But I know one thing, nor is everything to me. And yet, the turmoil in my heart does not ease. For us to be together, we need trust. He asked me to trust him and said he would do everything to protect both of us. But Ma..." My voice cracked, and I looked at her, my desperation evident. "How do I protect him?"

Ma stood silently for a moment, then rose from her chair with a quiet grace. She walked over to me, her movements deliberate, and placed a finger firmly on my chest, right over my heart. Her eyes met mine, unyielding yet filled with the wisdom of years.

"The Kayne Blood Stone," she said simply. "That’s how you protect him."

I blinked at her in confusion, the name echoing in my mind. "The Kayne Blood Stone?" I repeated, my brows furrowing.

Ma nodded, her expression unwavering. "You do know what it is, don’t you?"

I nodded slowly. "Pa told me before he died," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

Ma’s lips pressed into a thin line. She was about to speak again but paused, studying me carefully. Finally, she added with a touch of steel in her voice, "No one in Paradise Bay is stronger than you, Freyr. Do you understand that?" I hesitated, but she did not give me the chance to respond. "You were born a Kayne," she continued, her tone firm and resolute. "The blood of the Odme vampires runs through you. Ancient blood, powerful blood. Your strength is unmatched, but you’ve yet to embrace it. Freyr, the time for hesitation is over. You must prepare yourself for war."

Her words hung in the air, heavy with meaning and finality. I opened my mouth to speak, to protest, but the gravity of her statement rooted me in place.

I swallowed hard, my mind swirling with the enormity of what she was asking of me. War. Leadership. Protection. Trust. Tor.

"Ma," I finally managed, my voice barely above a whisper,

She placed both hands on my shoulders, her grip firm and grounding. "You were born ready, Freyr. You just need to believe it." The fire in her eyes was undeniable, and for the first time in a long time, I felt a flicker of that fire stir within me.

"Oh boy, we opted to stay out of the pack business, but trouble found us anyway," Qadira declared with a loud laugh, her amusement lighting up the room.

Her laughter was infectious, and Ma soon joined in, the sound of her soft chuckles blending seamlessly with Qadira’s boisterous mirth. The sight of them, so unbothered in the moment, made me shake my head in exasperation, though I could not help the small smile tugging at my lips.

"Really? Is this funny to you two?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at their shared amusement.

Qadira wiped a tear from the corner of her eye, her grin wide. "Oh, come on, Freyr! You have got to admit, the irony of it all is hilarious. The great Kayne family, sworn to avoid pack politics, is now knee-deep in chaos because of a Lycan Shifter "

Ma nodded; her lips still curved in a soft smile. "Life has a way of pulling you back into the fray, my dear. Whether you like it or not."

I sighed, leaning back in my chair, but the smile on my face remained. Watching them laugh, I realized how much I appreciated being born into this family, this eccentric, stubborn, loyal family.

"You two are impossible," I muttered, but my voice carried a warmth that betrayed my affection.

Ma placed a gentle hand on my shoulder, her laughter subsiding as her expression turned soft. "And you, Freyr, are Kayne. Do not ever forget what that means."
