Chapter 269: THE VOW OF LOVE
Chapter 269: THE VOW OF LOVE
{"A wolf protects its loved ones, not because he must, but because he will burn for those who cannot."}
The forest whispered with the memory of old roots and older bloodlines. Sunlight slipped between the trees in golden ribbons, dancing along the path Spark led me down. I followed in silence, hand in his, the air heavy with something unspoken.
We stepped into a small clearing nestled deep in the woods, and there it stood a stone cottage, blanketed in ivy and shadowed by towering oaks. Time had not been kind to it, but it still felt alive, pulsing with memory. Spark paused, his grip tightening slightly.
"This was my home," he said quietly. "Where Tor and I were born."
I looked at the weathered structure, feeling the weight of his words. It was not just a house. It was a heart still beating in the quiet of the forest.
"Our parents built it with their hands. After they were gone... It was just me and Tor. We tried to keep it together. I cooked. He hunted. We learned to be warriors here. But we were just boys trying not to fall apart."
He stepped forward, pushing open the creaking door, and I followed him inside.
Dust floated lazily in the morning light pouring through the single cracked window. There was a stone fireplace, long cold, and a small table with two worn chairs. Everything felt suspended in time, like the house had been holding its breath, waiting for him to return.
"She was powerful," Spark said softly, walking over to a cabinet and opening it with care. "Our mother, Ashra Gale. She had magic... not just shifter instincts, but real, old magic. It flowed in her like moonlight healing, protective, sacred."
He pulled out a folded cloth from inside a shawl, stitched with pale sigils that shimmered faintly as if remembering light. He stared at it for a long moment before turning back to me. "She passed that power to me. I always thought I would never need it, that strength in body and blade would be enough." He looked up at me then, his voice low, steady. "But now I know that she was preparing for me.
The weight of Fenrith’s words returned to me: the threat of Ashanai, the danger pressing close, the need to protect the Omega Sanctuary... and the fear that Spark could be taken from me.
I took a step toward him. "You never told me."
"I wasn’t ready," he admitted. "But you make me ready. I feel her magic waking inside me. And if it means protecting you, the Sanctuary, or the pups we might have—"
My breath hitched. The mention of pups sent a strange warmth through me, followed by a jolt of fear. He had said it so easily, as if he could see the future already laid out before us.
"Do you really want that?" I asked, voice barely a whisper. "If I got pregnant, would you truly accept it?"
He closed the distance between us, taking my face in his hands with such fierce tenderness it made my chest ache. "I wouldn’t just accept it," he said. "I would fight the gods for it."
I blinked, my throat thick. The world outside faded; there was only his touch, his words, the smell of old cedar and ash, and the echo of two young boys who had survived loss to become warriors, leaders... protectors.
"I love you, Wave," he whispered. "And I will protect everything we build. Even if I have to become something I do not understand yet."
I leaned in and kissed him slow, deep, as if trying to memorize this moment. And in Spark Gale’s childhood home, surrounded by the past, we carved out a promise for our future.
The warmth of his kiss still lingered on my lips, but Spark was already moving drawn by something deeper. A flicker of memory, or perhaps instinct. I watched him approach the far wall of the cottage, where an old chest rested beneath layers of dust and silence.
He knelt beside it, brushing his fingers over the worn wood, and then glanced at me. "My mother told us never to open this unless the world changed."
I swallowed hard. "And now?"
He looked back at the chest. "Now, the world has shifted."
With a quiet grunt, Spark cracked the lid open. The scent of cedar and herbs hit the air, followed by the faint hum of magic. It was not loud, but it was there like a heartbeat waiting beneath the floor.
Inside were relics I did not expect scrolls bound in leather ties, a set of moonstone rings etched with runes, a carved wooden dagger that glowed faintly, and a vial of silver fluid that shimmered with each movement. Spark picked it up carefully.
"This," he said softly, "is lunar essence. My mother said it was a gift from the Moon Goddess herself. It is only meant to be used in a time of great trial... to awaken dormant bloodlines or protect an unborn heir."
My stomach clenched. "Unborn heir?"
Spark looked up at me, eyes soft but solemn. "If the Omega bloodline within you is awakened fully... and if we ever conceive... this could ensure their protection. It could bind them to the moon’s favor."
I stepped closer, awed, and unsure. "Your mother planned all of this?"
"She didn’t just plan." He reached into the chest again and pulled out a cloth-wrapped object. As he unrolled it, I gasped.
A map drawn in glowing ink, depicting the Bay Shifter lands, Hanka Island, Sagstone Mountain, and something else...a constellation mirrored across the terrain. We stood there together, silent, and breathless in the candle-lit room, surrounded by prophecy and old power. For the first time, I truly understood what it meant to be bound to Spark Gale. Not just as a mate, but as part of something far older, something that had been waiting for us to awaken.
"Do you still feel scared?" Spark asked gently.
"No," I said, gripping his hand. "But I feel the weight now. And I will not let it break me."
He pulled me into an embrace, pressing his forehead to mine. "Good. Because we have a legacy to protect."
And in the heart of the forest, where moonlight touched the old stones, I knew that legacy had already begun. Spark took my hands, his grip warm and steady. There was something in his eyes no longer just fire, but a vow forming, ancient and sacred.
"I know the danger ahead," he said softly, "and I know what I am asking of you... what fate is asking of us. But I want to make this vow here, where my mother once cast her spells, where our ancestors walked."
I stepped closer, my voice steady. "Then I vow too. Not just because of who we are... but because of who we will be."
The wind whispered around us, rustling the leaves like a quiet chorus, as we both took a breath and spoke, our voices threading together like woven roots.
Spark spoke first. "I vow to protect you, Wave your heart, your soul, your place beside me. I vow to protect our bond, this pack, the sanctuary, and if the Moon Goddess grants us children... I vow to give my life before any harm ever touches them."
I met his gaze and answered. "I vow to stand with you, Spark through shadow and storm, through fire and frost. I vow to defend the Bay Shifter pack, to guard the Omega sanctuary with all that I am. And if the day comes that we hold life between us. I will shield them with my body, my love, and my blood."
Spark’s eyes shimmered, but he did not blink. "We are bound."
"To each other," I said, "and to something far bigger than us."
We leaned into one another, foreheads pressed together, hands still clasped.
The path back to the heart of Bay Shifter pack felt both familiar and heavier now. Spark walked beside me, his hand brushing mine every few steps like he needed the constant reminder I was there. The forest slowly gave way to the outer edges of the pack’s territory, homes nestled in groves, warriors training in the distance, the comforting scent of pine and earth in the air. Everything looked the same, but I felt different. Just as we reached the main gate, a young guard sprinted toward us, his eyes wide and shoulders tense.
"Beta Spark! Enforcer Wave!" he called out, breathless. "Elder Crystal and Elder Mercury, they want to see you both. Immediately."
I exchanged a glance with Spark, my heart skipping in my chest. "Did they say why?"
The guard shook his head. "No, sir. Just said it was urgent and to come straight to the council hall."
Spark’s posture stiffened. "Thank you. We will go now."
The guard nodded and dashed off again, probably to relay our arrival. Spark turned to me, his voice low. "I wonder what is so urgent?"
"Come on" We picked up our pace, moving quickly through the village and straight to the council hall where the guard had reported that Ma and Elder Crystal were waiting for us.
