Chapter 26: BAITING LORD MARCEL

{"If you don’t play to win, don’t play at all."}FREYR POV Twelve hours after leaving Ma’s house, I stood before the Paradise Coven council, their disdain palpable in the air. Hisses filled the grand hall, low and venomous, like a den of vipers warning an intruder. Cassius and Tio were the loudest, their glares piercing, but even General Idris Marcel, known for his unshakable composure, looked visibly annoyed by my presence. " Fucking bastards" Kayne my beast pushed the word through. I stood there, unbothered by their animosity, and my posture relaxed as though this was just another day. I could hear the soft grinding of teeth, the unmistakable signs of their barely contained rage at my refusal to bow or acknowledge their formalities. Let them simmer, I thought. I was not here to go. The sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed through the hall, silencing the murmurs. Lord Marcel entered with the authority of a predator who knew he ruled the jungle. The council members immediately bowed, their heads dipping low in unison, as though they were puppets on strings while I stayed rooted, unmoving, and let their silent outrage wash over me like a cool breeze. " Greetings Lord Marcel " The voices boomed in the Coven council hall. Lord Marcel took his seat at the head of the chamber, his crimson eyes scanning the room. His gaze lingered on me, curiosity flashing briefly before settling into a mask of neutrality. The silence thickened, the tension coiling tighter, until I finally decided to act. "Marcel," I said, my voice slicing through the quiet like a blade. The reaction was immediate and every head turned toward me in shock. Even Lord Marcel, the untouchable master of control, blinked and widened his eyes slightly. It was subtle, but I caught it. "Freyr Kayne," he said slowly, his voice smooth and commanding. "This is a surprise." I allowed myself a small smile, just enough to unsettle them further. "I have news for you, Lord Marcel," I said, keeping my tone calm yet firm. "Something you will find, intriguing. But I must request that we speak in private." The hall erupted in chaos. Council members leaped to their feet, their outrage spilling over in a chorus of protests. "This is unacceptable!" Cassius growled; his fangs bared. "There is no circumstance under which you could speak to the Coven Leader alone!" I turned my gaze to him, cool and indifferent. "I wasn’t asking for permission, Cassius," I said smoothly. The sheer audacity of my words hung in the air, and I caught the flicker of anger in Cassius’s eyes. Tio muttered something under his breath, undoubtedly a curse, but I ignored him. Instead, I nodded as if I had all the time in the world, turned on my heel, and began walking toward the grand double doors. The sound of swords being unsheathed stopped me in my tracks. I glanced over my shoulder to see the royal guards stepping forward, blocking my way. Their weapons gleamed in the dim light, and I raised an eyebrow, amused. "Is this supposed to fucking intimidate me?" I asked, my tone laced with mockery. "Enough," Lord Marcel’s voice cut through the commotion like thunder. The council member froze. "Leave us," he commanded, his tone leaving no room for argument. The council members exchanged hesitant glances, but one by one, they bowed and moved toward the exit. As they passed me, their curses and venomous looks were not subtle. Tio even spat on the floor near my feet. I smiled at them, unbothered, and waited until the last of them had disappeared through the doors before turning back to Lord Marcel. He watched me intently, his expression unreadable as he leaned back in his ornate chair. I strode forward with deliberate ease, stopping only when I was close enough to catch the faintest flicker of uncertainty in his gaze. "Now, Lord Marcel," I said, my voice low and smooth. "I have news for you" And then, I smiled, just enough to remind him that I was not here as a subordinate. I was here as an equal. "Spit it out, Freyr," Lord Marcel growled, his voice sharp and commanding. "Do you have any idea how much trouble you’ve caused me?" I could not help myself; I chuckled aloud and the tension in the room was so thick you could carve it with a blade, and yet, his frustration amused me. But only for a moment. I quickly composed myself, allowing my smirk to fade into a more serious expression. "My Lord," I began, inclining my head slightly in acknowledgment. "The information you received about the powerful Lycan of the Bay Shifter pack is accurate. He awakened. And yes, he is as formidable as the rumors claim. The words barely left my mouth before Lord Marcel surged to his feet. His chair screeched against the marble floor, and the sound reverberated through the empty hall. His crimson eyes burned with fury, and his fists clenched tightly at his sides, the veins in his arms bulging with tension. "Are you certain, Freyr?" he demanded, his voice low and dangerous, vibrating with suppressed rage. "I need to know, that this information is correct. Do not waste my time with half-truths or hearsay." I met his gaze without flinching, my demeanor calm despite the firestorm brewing in him. "I am certain, Lord Marcel," I replied, my voice steady. "The information is accurate. He is awake, and his power is unmatched as per my sources. His sharp intake of breath was almost imperceptible, but I noticed it. For a moment, the great Lord Marcel master of control, and ruler of the Paradise Coven seemed rattled. "Go on," he said, his voice now a cold blade cutting through the air. I inclined my head again, stepping closer as I continued, "The Lycan has extraordinary powers and he is not hiding but in plain sight in the Bay shifter pack. Lord Marcel’s jaw tightened, and his gaze turned distant, as though calculating his next move. For a moment, neither of us spoke, the weight of the revelation hanging heavily between us. Then, his eyes snapped back to mine, sharp and unyielding. "Do you understand what this means, Freyr?" he asked, his voice low but crackling with intensity. I nodded, my lips pressing into a thin line. "Yes, my Lord. It means the Bay Shifter pack is no longer just a thorn in your side." Lord Marcel’s lips curled into a humorless smile, his eyes narrowing with a dangerous glint. "And it also means," he said, stepping closer, "that you, Freyr Kayne, have just become more valuable to me than you realize." "What do you mean?" I drawled, deliberately letting boredom seep into my tone as I leaned casually against the nearest pillar. Lord Marcel’s lips curled into a predatory smile, one that did not reach his eyes. He stepped closer, his presence commanding and oppressive, and his voice dropped to a near whisper, the kind that sent a chill down the spine of anyone who heard it. "It’s time for the next step," he said, each word sharp and deliberate. "You will infiltrate the Bay Shifter pack and get close to this so-called powerful Lycan. I want you to test his strength, measure his power, and, most importantly, find his weakness." His eyes gleamed with malice as he continued, "You will report back to me with everything you discover. No detail is too small, Freyr. If he is as formidable as you claim, then I need to know exactly how to bring him to his knees." I straightened, my casual posture stiffening ever so slightly as I processed his words. A flicker of unease stirred within me, though I masked it well. This was not just a task, this was a potential death sentence. "And if he doesn’t have a weakness?" I asked, raising an eyebrow. My voice remained steady, but the question was laced with subtle defiance. Lord Marcel’s smile widened, cruel and knowing. "Everyone has a fucking weakness, Freyr. It is your job to find his weakness and how we are going to take the damn bastard down. I don’t need sleepless nights thinking who the hell is he and when he will attack the Paradise Coven and how much power does he have ?" I resisted the urge to roll my eyes, instead opting for a sharp nod. "Very well," I said, my tone clipped. Lord Marcel leaned in closer, his gaze piercing through me like a dagger. "That’s why I chose you," he said softly. "You are the best at what you do. The Paradise Coven will be depending on you and I hope you will not fail us." I did not flinch under his scrutiny, though every instinct in me screamed to break the tension with some witty remark. Instead, I inclined my head slightly and turned to leave, my mind already racing with how fucked up the situation was. As the heavy doors of the council hall slammed behind me, I could not help but smirk to myself. Infiltrate the Bay Shifter pack? Test the mighty Lycan? "Fucking easy right?" I muttered under my breath, though deep down, I knew that Alpha Tor was not going to be pleased when he discovered the true intention of the Paradise Coven
