Chapter 211: UNEXPECTED VISITOR

Chapter 211: UNEXPECTED VISITOR

{ "The strength of a family, like the strength of an army, lies in its loyalty to each other."}

Hours later, we finally made it to the bed, limbs heavy, hearts lighter, and the world’s weight left at the edge of the hallway.

I did not even have time to pull back the covers before Nessa pressed me down against them, her hands braced on either side of my shoulders, her eyes dark with something that had nothing to do with duty.

"You’ve been too tense all day," she murmured, lips brushing the shell of my ear. "I intend to fix that."

I did not argue. By the blood moon, I could not. Not when her mouth claimed mine in the next breath, fierce and purposeful, like she was erasing every lingering worry I had not yet voiced. Her kiss was a slow burn that started in my chest and sank deep into my core. Her body moved over mine, and I let her take the lead, let her pour all that barely contained fire into every touch, every press of skin.

I reached for her, but she gently pinned my wrists above my head, her fingers lacing through mine.

"Shh," she whispered against my lips, smiling as she kissed the corner of my mouth. "Tonight, let me."

I surrendered with a sigh, melting into the softness of the sheets, into the scent of her cedar and rain, and the way her skin felt like silk and flame all at once. Every place her hands touched, she rewrote tension into heat, and heat into pleasure.

And when she whispered my name, not as a commander, not as a leader, but just Aurora, I felt more seen than I had all week. She moved with the kind of confidence that only came from knowing me completely, my body, my rhythm, my quiet places. She did not just touch to ignite; she touched to worship, to remind, to anchor me back into my skin. And I let her. I wanted her to. Because this was where we existed beyond bloodlines and crowns. This was where we healed.

The rest of the night blurred into breathless sounds and tangled limbs and soft laughter muffled against pillows. Until the only thing that remained was the afterglow of warmth and the comfort of her arm slung across my waist as she pulled me close.

"I love you, you know," she murmured, half-asleep.

I traced lazy circles on her back and whispered, "I know. I love you more."

Hours later, my beast stirred before I did—a restless ripple beneath my skin, a whisper just beneath my heartbeat.

Danger? No. Not dangerous. But something else.

I blinked awake, breath catching in my throat. My senses sharpened instantly, honed by years of being hunted and crowned in the same breath. Beside me, Nessa stirred too, her arm tightening around me before she sat up.

"I felt it too," she murmured, voice husky with sleep.

I reached for the invisible thread that tethered my magic to the world around us, and then I felt her—her at the edge of our threshold.

Sierra. Nessa’s eyes flashed as she stretched her power outward. The air in the room shimmered for a moment, as if tasting the truth beyond the door. Then her lips curved into a small, knowing smile.

"It’s Sierra," she said. "And Qadira Kayne."

I was already halfway out of bed before she finished saying the names. "Now?"

"At the doorstep. Just standing there like they have not decided whether to knock or kick the door in."

I swore under my breath, yanking on my clothes with the practiced speed of someone who has been summoned at all hours for most of her adult life. Nessa dressed just as fast, and we hurried down the hallway, bare feet silent against cool stone floors, hearts just a little too fast for peace.

By the time we reached the main doors, one of the Royal Guards stationed outside straightened at attention and raised his fist to his chest.

"My Lady Aurora. Lady Nessa," he announced, voice ringing out in the quiet dawn. "Sierra Kayne, the former Lady of the Coven council, and her daughter Qadira Kayne request entry."

Nessa did not wait for formalities. She reached forward and yanked the door open herself, magic crackling faintly around her fingertips like static in the air and there they stood. Sierra was tall, poised, but with a storm in her eyes that told me something was not right. And beside her, Qadira, dressed in travel leathers dusted with blood and ash, her hair wind-swept, her expression unreadable.

Neither of them smiled. "Tell me you bring good news," I said, my voice low.

Sierra met my eyes. "That depends," she said calmly. "On how you feel about the truth."

Nessa did not hesitate. She stepped aside with that graceful command she wore like a second skin and nodded once, firmly.

"Come in," she said, voice warm but sharp at the edges. "You’re home."

Sierra gave a faint nod of thanks, and Qadira smiled as I closed the door behind them, and the moment it clicked shut, the tension in the air curled tighter, like a held breath. We moved wordlessly into the living room, the familiar scent of sage and old cedar filling the space. Nessa and I took our usual place on the couch, and our guests settled across from us, the hearth casting flickering light on their tired faces. Qadira sat in stillness, but her knuckles were white where they gripped the armrest.

Sierra looked at me then, and there was something in her eyes, something quiet but seismic.

"I felt him," she said, her voice soft but sure. "Freyr. He is alive."

My breath hitched, and beside me, I felt Nessa’s pulse spike through the bond we shared.

"Where?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

"In the deep forest," she replied. "Beyond the western ridges, near the Mira homeland."

The words settled in the room like a stone dropped into still water. "That’s sacred land," Nessa said gently, brows furrowed. "Even the wind doesn’t carry news from there easily."

"I know," Sierra murmured, folding her hands in her lap. "Which is why I am coming to you directly. I do not want the council alerted. No guards, no scouts. Just Qadira and me."

My gaze flicked to Qadira, who nodded once in confirmation. "We move better alone," she said. "And fast. If Freyr’s there... it means they have survived something the rest of us could not imagine. But if they are hurt—"

"—Then every moment matters," I finished for her, heart twisting.

Sierra leaned forward; eyes locked with mine. "This news cannot be recorded, tracked, or mentioned to the Coven Council. Not even to the other commanders. I need your word, Aurora."

There was a beat of silence. I looked at her—the woman who had stood beside me in fire and shadow, who had fought beside Nessa during the Fall, who had buried more than she ever admitted.

"You have it," I said finally.

Her shoulders relaxed just slightly, and I saw the relief pass through her like a breath.

"Thank you," she whispered.

I reached across and took her hand. "Be safe and find a way to send word to me about them."

She nodded. "I will."

Sierra and Qadira left with the quiet precision of warriors who knew the path ahead would not be easy. No hugs, no goodbyes, just a last look between us, heavy with unspoken promises. Nessa and I watched them disappear into the predawn mist, cloaked by forest shadows and magic.

We went back to bed after that, but neither of us slept. I lay on my side, facing the window, eyes tracing the dim outline of trees against the pale blue glow of false dawn. Nessa’s hand found mine under the blankets, fingers intertwined, but her breathing stayed shallow. Awake, like me. Hearts restless. Because we knew where they were going. What might be waiting?

The silence in the room grew thicker with every passing hour, the kind that wrapped around your ribs and squeezed. I closed my eyes and finally sleep engulfed me and then I welcomed it and let my body rest.

Hours later, just as the sky broke open into the blush of morning, a knock thundered at the door. Nessa groaned but we complied and woke up and went to the door after a shower and dressing up. One of the royal guards stood at the doorstep, breathing hard from a long run but standing tall with purpose.

"My Lady Aurora," he announced, voice urgent but brimming with something that shimmered like victory, "a message has arrived from the Bay Shifter lands. Delivered by Spark Gale, Beta under Alpha Tor’s command."

My spine straightened. "Speak."

"The vampire army," he said, "has been defeated."

The air in my lungs caught, and I heard Nessa’s soft gasp beside me.

"Where?" she asked.

Along the shoreline borders. The Rogourau beast led the charge, alongside Alpha Tor’s wolf warriors. They defended their territory with full force. Not only did they repel the enemy, but they also captured several traitors collaborating with Lord Marcel’s banner."

My pulse kicked up. "Captured alive?"

"Yes, my lady. Under heavy guard. Spark Gale reports Bay Shifter land is secure once more. They are holding the captives for interrogation and await your orders on what to do next."

I felt something shift inside me, then something I had not allowed myself to feel in days. "Send word back with our gratitude," I told the guard. "And tell Spark Gale to hold the prisoners. We will send an envoy by dusk to begin the extraction and questioning. Paradise owes them a debt."

The guard bowed and left as swiftly as he came, boots fading down the stone steps. I turned to Nessa, and her eyes were already on me, wide and stunned with the same relief I felt flooding my chest.

"We did it," she whispered. "At least part of it."

I let out a breath, slow and steady, and reached for her hand again.

"One front at a time," I murmured. "Bay Shifter land is safe. That gives us room to breathe and to focus on Freyr’s return."

Nessa nodded, eyes shining. "And when he does... We will be ready."
