Chapter 179: INTO THE HEAT WAVE
{ "There is the heat of Love, the pulsing rush of Longing, the lover’s whisper, irresistible—magic to make the sanest shifter go mad."}
Without another word to me, Flora turned and strode toward the camp. Her movements were clipped, all business, like nothing about what I’d just confessed rattled her. But I could see it in the way her shoulders rolled back, the tension in her stance like a storm gathering behind her ribs. I trailed after her, slower, half in a daze, half trying to pull my beast back by the scruff of its neck. It wasn’t listening anymore. Not after what she said. Not after that look in her eyes. She reached the circle of generals and commanders standing around the fire. They straightened when she approached.
"We’re heading up Sagstone Mountain for the night," Flora announced, her voice all steel and certainty. "We need rest and space to strategize. You’ll keep the perimeter tight. If anything moves anything at all, you send a flare and come get us. Understood?"
One of the commanders glanced at me. I avoided his eyes, my body burning like a brand under their gazes.
"Yes, Commander," they chorused, no questions asked. Of course not. Flora’s word was law.
She didn’t wait for another word. Just turned back toward the tree line and without warning, her hand closed around my wrist and it was like being struck by lightning. I gasped, my knees nearly buckling. Her fingers were hot, too hot, and her grip was firm, not enough to hurt, but enough to say you’re mine tonight without ever speaking the words.
The moment her skin touched mine, the beast roared.
I gritted my teeth, a choked sound escaping my throat as the heat surged back up, stronger, wilder, like it had only been pretending to be dormant. My vision blurred for a second, and I swore I could feel the beast’s claws raking just beneath the surface of my skin.
Mate. Now. Take her. Yours.
She was pulling me through the trees, up the path again up where the shadows thickened and the world narrowed down to just the two of us. Her scent was everywhere now, wrapping around me, curling into my lungs.
"Flora—" I rasped, but my voice failed. I was shaking again, this time not from restraint but from the force of what was coming.
I stumbled after her, caught in the heat rising like a tide, devouring me from the inside out. My claws threatened to break through my fingertips. My breath came out in ragged gasps. The air was too thin. Everything smelled like her. The Rogourau beast inside me was no longer pacing. She was awake, and she was ready to claim.
I pressed a hand to my chest, stumbling and spoke up, "Flora, if you keep touching me like that... I don’t think I can hold it back."
She stopped walking and then turned around as her eyes met mine, and they weren’t cold anymore. They were burning with desire as she responded, "I’m not asking you to."
I barely registered when my feet left the ground.
One second, I was stumbling, breathless and burning, and the next, Flora’s arms were around me, lifting me like I weighed nothing at all. My body pressed against hers, chest to chest, hips to hips, and I could feel every sharp line of her strength through the Armor and leather and the thin veneer of control we were both pretending to have.
My arms instinctively looped around her shoulders, but it wasn’t for balance. It was to hold o, because everything was spiralling now, and she was the centre of it. I buried my face into the curve of her neck, tried to breathe, tried to stay calm. Her scent hit me like a drug, salt, steel, and wild bay leaves crushed underfoot, and the beast inside me thrashed so violently it made my body jerk. She didn’t say a word as she carried me, fast and silent, cutting through the woods like she’d done it a hundred times before. We crested a rocky incline, and the dark mouth of the Sagstone cave came into view. Memories flashed across my mind: us camping their last moon cycle, quiet conversations, side glances too long, and tension so thick I could’ve chewed through it.
She stepped into the cave without hesitation, the stone swallowing us up in cool silence. A memory. A promise. Then she set me down, and my boots touched the ground and then gave out completely.
I crumpled to my knees with a rough thud, the cold stone biting through the fabric. My whole body trembled, too hot, too sensitive, every nerve lit up like a fuse burning beneath my skin.
I looked up at her lips parted, breath heavy, eyes wide with the wild edge of heat, and she was already reaching for me. Her fingers hooked in the front of my shirt, and I gasped as she yanked me up just enough to slam her mouth against mine. It was everything I’d been holding back, crashing forward all at once.
Her hands were in my clothes, clutching, dragging, and claiming, and the second I tried to press up into her, she pushed me flat on my back, her weight following, her knee slipping between mine.
I arched, a strangled sound escaping my throat. My beast howled in approval. She was on top of me—finally—her hands on either side of my head, her hair falling forward like a curtain around us.
Her voice, when it came, was low and rough against my mouth.
"You should’ve told me sooner."
"I was scared," I whispered. "Scared I wouldn’t be able to stop."
Her eyes locked onto mine, and gods, there was fire in them. "Then don’t."
Flora kissed me like she had nothing to lose like I was already hers and always had been. And maybe I was. Maybe I’d been fighting the inevitable since the day I first looked her in the eyes and felt my soul tilt off balance.
Her lips were hot, insistent, and demanding, and they broke something loose inside me—shattered my restraint like it was made of glass. She tasted like smoke and rain and the promise of something feral, something permanent. My body reacted before my thoughts could catch up, my hands gripping her hips, her back arching into me with a needy sound that sent lightning down my spine.
Then, I snapped and growled low in my throat, spun her gently but firmly, and pinned her to the cool stone beneath us. Her breath hitched as I braced one hand behind her head to protect her, cradling her like she was breakable even though I knew damn well she wasn’t. She was the strongest creature I knew. But right now, she was under me, and I was going to treat her like she mattered more than the whole gods-damned mountain.
Our lips crashed again, harder this time, deeper like we were trying to swallow the distance that had always lived between us. Flora’s moan echoed in the hollow stone chamber, soft and raw and unguarded, and it shot straight through me like wildfire.
My entire body trembled above her heat pooling, control fraying at the edges, the beast inside clawing toward the surface with pure, delirious joy. My hands were roaming without permission, one gripping her waist, the other still cradling her head and her body moved with mine like she’d always known this was coming. We broke apart, gasping for air, our foreheads pressed together, our chests heaving. My lips were swollen, my heart threatening to beat right out of my ribcage. I looked down at her flushed cheeks, her half-lidded eyes, her lips parted in breathless surrender, and it almost broke me.
"I—" I couldn’t speak. Words were smoke now.
Her fingers curled into the front of my shirt, pulling me closer.
"You’re shaking," she murmured, her voice hoarse.
I let out a breathless laugh, pressing my forehead against hers. "You make it impossible not to."
She smiled just barely, but it was real, and it made the heat inside me feel almost bearable. Almost.
But the beast was still there, watching her, loving her, needing her, and the moment the last thread of restraint snapped, we were gone, lost to each other, to the storm, to the heat. We rolled across the cold stone floor of the cave, tangled in limbs and breath and fire. I didn’t remember when the rest of our clothes were shed, only the feeling of her skin against mine, hot, slick, real. Every moan she made fed the beast inside me, coaxed her deeper into the spiral. And gods, I wanted to fall.
Flora was beneath me, above me, everywhere, her hands in my hair, her mouth on my shoulder, her breath warm against my ear. I felt her nails drag down my spine and I shuddered, nearly losing control all over again. The heat was no longer just inside me; it was between us now. It was her mouth on my skin. It was the sound of her voice calling my name like it meant something sacred.
And then instinct took over as my teeth slid free without warning, and before I could stop it, before I could ask, before I could think, I sank my teeth into the curve of her neck. She gasped, and then a moan escaped her mouth, and it felt like it echoed in my bones. The moment my teeth touched her skin, it happened: the surge. The mark ignited in golden fire between us, not just on the skin but in our souls. My beast howled in triumph, and Flora’s aura lit up like a second sun, wrapping around mine, claiming me right back. Our minds collided, merged. And I felt her. All of her, the rage she carried like Armor. The loyalty that burned like a hearth. The ache she’d hidden for weeks. And underneath it all... love. Raw and wild and terrifying.
She loved me and wanted me, and this made me love her so deeply that my chest hurt. I kissed the mark on her neck, and she trembled. My hips moved on instinct, slow and claiming, and every sound she made drove me further over the edge. The heat rolled through me in endless waves, searing, beautiful, and she met it. Matched it. Tamed it.
Hours passed, or maybe it was only moments. Time unravelled in her arms and somewhere, deep in the quiet after, when our bodies were slick with sweat and our hearts had finally slowed... I felt it.
The fire was slowed down, not extinguished but sated. My beast curled around hers in our shared soul space, purring instead of growling, finally calm. I exhaled into the crook of Flora’s neck, still holding her close, our legs tangled, our bodies exhausted and warm.
"Mate," I whispered, and she purred next to me, and the sound put a grin on my face.
