Chapter 167: BENEATH THE SECRET GARDEN
{ " But I think there is a magical link between you and me. A bond that not even distance can break" }
FREY’S POV
I lay back on the bed, staring at the darkened rafters above, the weight of the world pressing down harder than usual today. The tension in the air, the sense that something, someone, was slipping through the cracks, gnawed at my thoughts. My body had grown accustomed to the weight of responsibility, but it didn’t make it any easier to bear. The room was quiet, too quiet. The only sound was the faint hum of the wind brushing against the stone walls outside.
"Frery," Kayne’s voice rumbled inside my mind, a deep, primal sound that resonated through my bones. It wasn’t a voice I could ignore, even if I wanted to.
I sat up, my eyes immediately narrowing as the world around me seemed to grow sharper, more acute. "What is it?"
His voice was calm, but there was an edge, something almost concerned. "Tor," Kayne said. "He’s disturbed. I can feel it, and Gale is worried as they felt our anger and fury when we were in Bloodstonee Mountain. I tried to reassure them, but still-"
I ran a hand over my face, trying to shake off the unease that crept into my chest. "Tor... worried? "
"Yes," Kayne responded.
I stood up, my boots thudding softly against the wooden floor as I moved toward the window, staring out into the night. The stars were hazy behind the clouds, like the uncertainty swirling in my gut. "What do you suggest?"
"You know what to do," Kayne replied, the sound of a growl underlining his words. "Reach out. He won’t come to you with all the dangers surrounding both Paradise Coven and the Bay shifter pack.
My heart tightened. "You think he’s in danger?"
"That’s the question, isn’t it?" Kayne’s voice took on a sharper edge. "I can feel Gale; he is worried."
"Alright," I muttered under my breath, more to myself than to Kayne. "We need to go to the secret garden as that is the only safe place that we can use to reach out to him."
I moved toward the door, my hand gripping the handle as I prepared myself for whatever was about to unfold. Kayne’s presence was a constant in the back of my mind, an anchor I’d come to rely on. With that, I stepped out into the hall, the quiet of the house pressing in around me, Tor needed me. And it was time I reached out.
I stepped out into the cool night air, the wind rustling softly through the trees. The moon was barely a sliver in the sky, casting pale light across the path that led away from the Kayne house. My mind was still heavy with Kayne’s warning about Tor, but my feet carried me forward, guided by the steady pull of duty.
Then I heard it, the sound of soft footsteps behind me. "Frery."
I stopped and turned, already knowing who it was. MA stood in the doorway, her silhouette framed by the dim light inside. Her expression was soft but curious, her eyes scanning me with that knowing warmth only a mother could have.
"Where are you going at this hour?" she asked, her voice laced with concern. "It’s the middle of the night."
I hesitated, guilt creeping in. She’d always been able to sense when something was off with me. Even in the quietest moments, her instincts were sharp. "I’m going to the secret garden," I replied, keeping my tone casual, though the weight of my thoughts was still heavy on my chest. "Just need some space to think."
She smiled softly, the kind of smile that held years of wisdom, and took a slow step toward me. "It’s hard to sleep when your mind’s racing, isn’t it?" she said with a quiet understanding. "I heard movement in the house, so I came to check on you." Her eyes narrowed ever so slightly, like she was trying to piece together my unspoken thoughts. I shifted uncomfortably but met her gaze. "The secret garden?" she asked, her voice softening. "Is that where you’re going?"
"Yeah," I nodded, the weight in my chest not easing. "I just... need to clear my head. I’ll be back soon."
She raised an eyebrow, a playful glint appearing in her eyes. "That’s where the Mira underground house is. You already figured it out, right?" Her words weren’t a question but more of an observation. The secret garden was no ordinary place; it led to chambers and hallways beneath the Kayne house, hidden even from the most prying eyes.
I paused, wondering if I should tell her more. "It’s the only place I can think clearly without all the noise, and I need to reach out to my lifetime mate."
She chuckled lightly, but there was an undercurrent of concern in her smile. "I know, Frery," she said. I swallowed hard, glancing toward the path leading to the garden.
"I’ll be careful," I said, though it didn’t feel convincing even to my ears.
Her gaze softened, but she didn’t push further. "Just be safe, Frery. "
"I will," I promised. "I won’t be long."
With a nod, she turned back toward the house, her figure disappearing into the shadows, and I stood there for a moment longer, the cool night air brushing my face. I moved through the darkness at Vamp speed, my body a blur of motion as I left the Kayne house behind, the cool night air whipping past me. The familiar path to the secret garden felt like a pulse in the earth beneath my feet, guiding me. I didn’t need to think; my instincts took over, and the world around me blurred into a shadowed tunnel of ancient stone and whispering wind.
In seconds, I was at the entrance to the garden, the air colder as I stepped inside. The familiar scent of earth and night filled my lungs. The heavy, thick scent of nature laced with age-old magic. I didn’t slow my pace. The doors to the chambers were just ahead, hidden beneath vines and moss, the metal creaking open in response to my touch. As soon as I stepped inside, I slammed the door shut behind me, sealing the entrance with a wave of my hand. I didn’t bother with lights, there was no need. The darkness here had a life of its own. It knew me. The air felt different tonight, charged, as if something ancient had awakened beneath the stone.
I moved deeper into the chambers, my footsteps soft against the cold floor, heading toward the heart of the secret chambers, the inner parent chambers. And then, I felt it as it hit me like a force, a rush of power that I hadn’t sensed before. It hummed in the air, thrumming through the stone walls and the very earth beneath my feet.
For the first time, I felt its presence. It was like a quiet fire burning underneath the surface, just waiting for the right moment to flare up. My pulse quickened as I moved deeper, instinct telling me that the Mira magic had noticed me. I didn’t need to guess. I knew it. The power sensed me. I had been to the Mira house by the Blood Stone Mountain Forest, but it was different here. Stronger. Like an ancient, sleeping giant that had just cracked its eyes open. My fingers tingled with the weight of it as I moved deeper into the inner chambers, each step making the sensation stronger. The walls themselves seemed to vibrate, the stone beneath me humming.
I paused, my breath steady, feeling the subtle hum of power around me. I had been here before, Tor and I, both unaware of what lay beneath. But now, I could feel it, like the pulse of blood beneath my skin. It sizzled in the air, thick and potent. I knew, deep in my bones, that the Mira had been dormant, locked away perhaps even afraid to awaken. But tonight, it stirred.
I sat down in the centre of the chamber, my legs folding beneath me as the pulse of the Mira power hummed in the air around me. It was like a current running through the very ground, weaving through the stone, alive and awakening. The silence was thick, pressing in on me, but there was something else beneath its low, almost primal hum of energy that I couldn’t ignore. Kayne’s presence stirred within me as if he could feel it, too. His power, the beast that slept inside my soul, stirred slowly like a creature awakening from a long, deep slumber.
The connection between us flared to life, a sharp rush of awareness flooding my mind. The bond between us had always been strong, but tonight it felt different. The air was thick, charged, and with it came Kayne’s voice, deep and primal, like thunder rumbling in the distance. Freyr... His voice was like a whisper in my mind, though it carried the weight of ages. The power here... it calls to me.
I held my breath, feeling the familiar weight of his presence wrap around my senses, a part of me that had always been there. His power was ancient, just like this place. I clenched my fists, feeling the stirrings of both power and purpose. "I know, Kayne. I feel it, too."
The pulse of energy beneath me grew stronger, the air thick with tension, as if the very world around me was holding its breath. I felt something shift in the mind line, something that made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. It was soft at first, barely a whisper, but I knew immediately who it was.
Mate.
The word echoed through my mind, and my heart skipped a beat. Gale’s voice—quiet but unmistakable came through the link like a breath of wind on a still night. His presence was... unexpected, like a distant star suddenly flaring into view. "Gale?" I whispered aloud.
Yes... His voice was barely there, a whisper through the storm of power, like a thread pulling me toward something or someone I couldn’t yet see. Mate.
I swallowed, the weight of his words settling deep in my chest. Gale, what—
Trust the bond, Frery, he whispered, his voice a little clearer now, a little more urgent.
