Chapter 85: Demons 5 / Death
Chapter 85: Demons 5 / Death
After a few seconds, falling a dozen or two meters, Oliver’s and the demonic monkey’s bodies slammed against the dark, murky sewer water in the pit.
"Splash."
The disgusting smell pierced his nose like a sharp spear as Oliver felt the monkey’s arms grab and pull. The creature was unhappy because it failed to protect itself from Oliver.
It ripped the blood and fur covering its face to finally take a breath in while grabbing him by the leg.
’The damned creature is too quick.’ Oliver thought and tried to dive down.
The water was swirling into a bottomless pit right below him, like a whirlpool of filth and death. The undercurrent made it impossible to reorient his body. The only thing he could grab onto was the monkey itself.
’Does this guy know how to swim?’
In the darkness, he wrapped his bleeding shoulder with blood and forced his way to the monkey. If moving further away was not an option, he had to think of a way to escape or kill it. And for that, the best tool at his disposal was the whirlpool of water.
’It doesn’t.’
While the monkey was a strong monster, it was not built to swim. Its giant but slender body was made entirely of bones, fur, and dense muscle. A combination deadly to any swimming animal.
The fur was too long and dense, which caused the water resistance to slow it down, while the dense body made it sink like a stone in the whirlpool. If he could push it into the undercurrent, the whirlpool might slow it down or maybe even pull it into the depths to finally kill it.
’I need to bring it closer to the whirlpool.’ Oliver quietly decided.
Before the monkey had any time to react, he released a long line of tentacles into the whirlpool while grabbing onto the monkey with what he had.
’That’s it.’
He felt a strong pull from down below.
Although he couldn’t clearly see what was happening around him, he knew the whirlpool had gotten hold of his blood tentacles.
Immediately, he tightened his grip on the monkey, which was thrashing around to find a ledge to cling to.
The force that was being transferred to Oliver’s body was soon transferred to its body. Without any place to hold onto, the monkey felt its body sinking, making it thrash around in panic and anger.
Oliver felt a few hits directly slamming against his body as it tried to shake him off.
Immediately, all the ribs in his body crumbled as his heart and internal organs turned to a bloody mess.
*Puk*
Oliver spat a mouthful of blood, bile, and other contents that were too difficult to distinguish what it was. Maybe it was the crushed internal organs. Maybe it was the food that he ate a few hours ago.
Either way, it made his nose sting and his eyes pop.
Oliver felt unimaginable pain travel through his body.
Any normal person would have given up on life and died in that exact moment.
No, even if they wanted, they would have lost consciousness and died.
However, Oliver clung on.
Even though the pain was rippling through his nervous system like a burst of fireworks, he forced his brain to calm down. Then, he sucked all the blood from his entire body, the internal organs and muscles, and redirected it to his brain.
He had to maintain consciousness.
At least until he forced the monkey underwater.
’Can’t let go. Need to hold it down.’ Barely, a thought clung onto his mind as he instinctively tried to heal.
However, the monkey was not done with him.
When its body sank into the deep water below, it grabbed hold of Oliver’s hands and pulled it in either direction.
Despite his fierce struggle, Oliver was not strong enough to stop it.
*Crrrs*
Like an old fabric being ripped apart, his muscles and tendons connected to his shoulder were ripped effortlessly. The clavicle and parts of the shattered sternum broke apart from his body and were thrown away, along with his arm.
In a second, Oliver’s entire torso turned into a piece of mangled flesh and bones. With no arms and part of his chest missing, the organs and blood spilled out into the sewer water.
The hope of healing and putting up a fight was immediately slashed.
If the monkey didn’t panic when it fell into the water, it could have done the same thing faster. Oliver knew this would happen the moment he swam close to it.
’Ah! Is this my first failure since I returned?’ His barely conscious brain formed an unnecessary thought in his mind.
’This might also be my first death after returning.’
Even after doing everything he could, his consciousness was slipping away.
’Then, let’s end this beautifully.’
Oliver’s waning consciousness shone brightly for a second. Then, with pure will power, he used almost all of his blood at his disposal and strangled the monkey. Then he grabbed it and pulled down, moving into the depths.
Once Oliver accepted fate, it became easy for him.
He gave an early warning about demons. Helped someone and almost prevented a catastrophe. While he failed to prevent the gate from opening, he had done everything he could. There was no need to be disappointed, he thought, and focused his attention on the monkey.
The revival ability was his backup and something that he didn’t want anyone to know about. But hiding it was out of the question now.
With the added weight of more than five metric tons of tentacles, the whirlpool sucked his blood into it. Along with it went the struggling demons, gasping for breath.
The demon was swallowing the sewer water, as their bodies were pulled down. Momentarily, it glanced at Oliver in anger and dismay.
However, Oliver couldn’t see any of it. He fell calmly into the unknown depths, knowing the creature was following suit.
Finally, his consciousness blinked out of existence, and the tentacles of blood dissolved into the sewer water.
Oliver died.
Fortunately, the monkey was trapped in the whirlpool, struggling to swim up.
If nothing unexpected happens, it will die too.

When the phone flashlights broke, Achara panicked. Although she was a soldier honed in battle, the claustrophobic environment added to the filthy and dark sewers made her instinctively wince.
It was a lapse in her judgment.
Immediately, she felt something barely detectable stick to her spine. The pain was imperceptible, and yet, she felt her consciousness wane instantaneously.
-
A short while later, she felt as though she was falling. Then she moved left and right in a jerking motion and came to a stop. This sequence of feeling disoriented her, but it also helped her regain her consciousness.
Still, she couldn’t open her eyes.
She felt like something was stopping her from opening her eyes. No, it was not anything physical. It was something within her.
Even channeling mana felt impossible at the moment.
’I am paralyzed!’ She quickly concluded.
Why was she paralyzed, and why was she moving if she was paralyzed?
One answer came with two more questions.
Slowly, she began to think deeply, and her mind began to catch on. The jerking motion, the sturdy and strong muscles she was feeling near her chest, and the firm objects tying her to someone.
Everything fell into place when she realised she was being carried on the back by Oliver.
Her body was hugging Oliver from behind while he secured her with his ability. Even without eyes, she came to the conclusion.
’Is he fighting something while protecting me?’ A pang of guilt sprouted in her heart.
She was supposed to be the stronger one. And yet again, she fell first. Embarrassment and guilt swallowed her.
’I need to wake up quickly.’
She was quickly regaining her senses. Something was flowing into her body, clearing out the toxins that prevented her from moving. She could feel her body returning to its normal state. Oliver was doing something to help her.
Any second now, she would be able to use mana and finally help him, she thought.
However, before she could do that, she felt her body being thrown back.
For a second, she wondered if she was being abandoned. Her eyelids fluttered in panic.
Well, she was not in a position to blame him. It was her own mistake that led them to this situation. Whatever foe Oliver was fighting was something that could take her down. With his meager strength, it indeed was a reasonable choice to abandon her, escape, and relay the information rather than wasting time.
She couldn’t blame him for prioritising his life over her own.
Achara breathed heavily while desperately trying to open her eyes. She was thankful that he fought this long to save her life.
While her thoughts flowed through her mind, she felt her body being gently placed on the ground by the tentacles surrounding her. Then the noises moved away from her.
A short while later, she heard the roar of a beast and the noise of water splashing.
’What happened?’ She asked herself.
Squeezing out all her willpower, she opened her eyes. But only darkness greeted.
’What happened to him?’ She asked again.
While there was no deep connection between her and Oliver, she knew the kid was trying to save her. Did something terrible happen to him? She wondered.
If so, was she the reason? She couldn’t calm down.
’I need to get up.’ Achara could finally channel some mana towards her spine and nerves. It was a desperate attempt to quickly recover.
