Chapter 148: Ate

Chapter 148: Ate

The sun was slowly sinking beyond the horizon, inviting night back into their camp.

He gazed up at the full moon, shining in the sky, and wondered how he had ended up in this situation.

Meeting Oliver was unexpected.

Furthermore, becoming part of his lousy guild was never in his plans. But as time moved forward, he was swept into the whirlpool around him.

Finally, he was learning from the sly, crooked, unorthodox, slightly evil person.

Was this his fate? He asked the moon.

However, like most things in the world, it didn’t reply.

He hugged the ground and stayed there for a few more minutes.

Meanwhile, Oliver went back to the camp and took a bath. Then he swiftly prepared the ingredients to cook and lit the grill.

Today, he could see sporadic rain clouds circling the hill, so he tied a tarpaulin sheet above the camp to shelter them from the rain. When the evening sun disappeared, the camp returned to a still darkness.

Other than the sizzling noise of the grilling meat, there was no other sound.

Oliver took this chance to wear the VR headset. Then he brought a small speaker box and pressed a button on it.

Immediately, the squealing noise Root made began to play from it.

Yesterday night, Root had recorded the squeals to simplify the process of attracting the mythical beast.

Oliver played the recorded file at random.

Despite it being a recording, it did attract the mythical beast. It flew into the camp and circled the grill and Oliver. Occasionally, it moved close to the speaker, trying to find what it was. Oliver watched it through the VR headset and continued grilling meat.

The mythical beast had yet to try his cooking; hence, taming or interacting with it was out of the question. Still, he was hopeful that his grilling method would attract its attention.

While the meat sizzled, Root came down from the sparring area and went into the boat to take a bath. Oliver let him be because he felt a tiny bit of guilt for beating him to a pulp.

Soon, it was time for dinner.

This time, along with grilled meat, a grilled silver crab was also placed.

Unlike other crabs, the shell of this one didn’t change color once cooked; it still had its silver luster.

Oliver peeled the shell of one and ate.

Root, who came out after bathing, also followed him and did the same. Immediately, their eyes lit up.

Both looked at each other in wonder. They never expected the silver crab to taste so good.

The tender white meat had a slightly sweet flavor, but the most important flavor was the rich umami it had. Like a flavor bomb, it exploded in their mouths once they dipped it in spicy sauce.

"This is friggin’ delicious," Oliver muttered.

"Hmm..." Root nodded. His gaze moved to the pit filled with thousands of silver crabs near the camp. ’Does each one taste this good?’ he wondered.

Now he knew why the crabs were called a rare delicacy. Then his eyes focused on the red dot flying above them. The mythical beast would come every hour or two and eat one.

"It is enjoying life, eating free and easy food," he muttered.

"Yes, it is," Oliver agreed. "But not for long. Once we tame it, we will put it to good use."

"Hm? How? What can this small thing do?"

"Once it grows up, you will know."

Root squinted his eyes, hearing the vague answer. "You don’t really know, do you?" he asked.

Oliver raised his head. "Of course I know."

"Yeah, sure." Root ignored him.

"It’s a mythical beast. The myth is engraved on the walls of the temples here."

"Yeah, sure." Root’s tone was dismissive.

To prove Root wrong, Oliver carefully explained the details about the creature’s abilities—at least, about the abilities he knew of.

"The beast can fly."

"I can see that."

"It can bend space around it and hide within."

"You already informed me about that."

"It can swallow objects larger than itself."

"I guessed that when it swallowed a 5kg block of dragon meat."

"It can warp space and travel long distances."

"That’s new."

Oliver nodded proudly.

"It can also create pocket space inside its body to store large objects."

"That’s an awesome ability." Root’s eyes shone.

"Yes, that’s the main reason I wanted to tame the beast."

Root nodded, understanding why Oliver was hell-bent on taming the creature. If it could do half the things he said, it would still be worthwhile to risk angering it while taming.

"That’s all?" he asked.

"Yes, for now."

"Hm..." Root nodded. "Anyway, the ability you mentioned last would probably require it to use a lot of mana. That means we have to wait until it grows up, right?" Root inquired.

"Yes, that’s right. But you don’t have to worry about its growth. This thing here will grow up fast." Oliver had seen its huge body in the past, so he knew it would quickly grow up in a decade or two. That’s quick, considering the growth rate of a beast.

"Oh!" Root gazed at the finger-sized red streak of light and wondered if it was true. While he had doubts, he still chose to believe in Oliver.

They talked for a few more minutes after that. Once they had their fill, they left behind some grilled dragon meat, raw meat, raw crab, and a cooked silver crab on the table before going inside the boat.

The next day, they checked the table.

The mythical beast did not consume any of the food. But Oliver didn’t give up.

He did the same for the next few days. Finally, on the last day of the week, he saw empty plates.

They checked the video and verified that the creature had eaten it.

A smile bloomed on both Root’s and Oliver’s faces. When the creature ate the food they left behind, their chances of taming it increased greatly. They excitedly jumped and high-fived.

A couple of days prior, the dragon core was refined into three pills.

Lin Hua consumed one pill and fell into a deep slumber. Nothing could wake her up after that, so everyone was tense.

Lin Yue paced around the room, patiently guarding her sister, hoping for her to wake up.

Days went by, and finally, she woke up.

The Lin family child, the crystal flower, who was known for her beauty, returned to her lively appearance as she sat up on the bed. Immediately, the family was sent into a festive mood.
