Chapter 318: -75- The Eternal Sleep of the Deity
"Blood Demon Church! Zachley! You’ve actually sided with the Blood Demon Church!"
Struck with shock and rage upon seeing the iconic demon eye mask, Count Yulster couldn’t believe his eyes.
The Bloodline ship captain unnaturally averted his gaze and, along with the other sailors, stepped aside, clearing a pathway.
In the sky above, an imposing black dragon slowly descended onto the deck, its size steadily shrinking.
A figure in a black robe leapt down from the back of the dragon, taking leisurely steps toward the completely enervated Count Yulster, looking down on him from above.
Crimson eyes carrying a hint of mockery, the voice from beneath the mask was slightly hoarse,
"Yulster Nais, one of the four generations of the Nais Bloodline, and an Earl by rank."
"One of the ten Dukes of the Nais Clan—Duke Yoroc’s confidant and the direct overseer of the Returning Star Plan. However... due to your obsession with the study of magic inscriptions, you often acted as a hands-off manager, resulting in the Bloodline members responsible for executing the Returning Star Plan fighting their own battles, with pitiful efficiency..."
As his secrets were laid bare, Yulster’s complexion turned from pale to green with fury.
Clenching his teeth, he angrily said,
"Damn Shedite! Meddling in the affairs of my Nais, are you trying to provoke a war?!"
The Blood Demon Cultist chuckled lightly and said,
"Provoke a war? Oh, certainly not."
"To be more precise, my dear Count, we Shedite... are also allies of the Nais!"
As he spoke, he licked his lips beneath the mask, his pupils flaring with a fervent glow,
"I’ve never had a Count-level Blood Servant before. Today... perhaps I can try it out."
With that, the Blood Demon Cultist raised his right hand gently, lifting a black scepter as a dark red glow began to gather upon the magic wand.
Feeling the pressure of a power stemming from his bloodline, Count Yulster’s expression shifted subtly.
However, just as the Blood Demon Cultist was about to release his spell, Bloodline ship captain Zachley stepped forward, placing himself in front of Yulster:
"Special Envoy, his Grace the Duke has commanded that the handling of the Conservative faction is an internal affair of the Nais Bloodline. Even if we have cooperated, Shedite must not interfere, nor can you use the Blood Profanity Staff against my Nais!"
The Blood Demon Cultist halted his movements, his sanguine gaze fixing on him for a moment before letting out a light chuckle:
"Since it is his Grace the Duke’s order, I will, of course, comply. Let his Grace the Duke be the one to try out the New Holy Wand on this Count..."
With that, he slowly retracted the scepter, casting a somewhat regretful glance at Yulster.
The Duke... Lord?
Yulster was stunned.
A flicker of recognition crossed his mind, a familiar silhouette emerging faintly.
Count Yulster’s expression shifted again.
He wanted to say something, but the side effects of the damage to his Spiritual Force Field were making him increasingly dizzy, and the phantom poison in his system erupted completely as his strength waned.
In the end, he fainted...
...
Yulster had no idea how long he had been unconscious.
When he came to, the mental pain had ceased, and the phantom poison within him had dissipated.
Recalling the attack he had suffered just before losing consciousness, Yulster quickly sat up and then discovered he was in a dimly lit room.
"You’re awake."
An elderly, soothing voice sounded, drawing Yulster’s attention.
He looked up to see by candlelight an old man in a nobleman’s robe sitting behind a desk not far away, perusing a scroll of parchment.
Shadows obscured the old man’s appearance, and Count Yulster couldn’t see the other’s face clearly, but under the candlelight, he could make out the parchment on the desk.
That was none other than the letter he had been writing halfway through on the boat!
Count Yulster’s expression grew stern as he quickly reached into his chest.
And, sure enough, the letter he had been carrying in his chest, the Communication Crystal used for daily contact with Duke Yoroc, and the storage equipment for daily necessities and magic apparatus, were all missing.
"No need to search any further, I’ve taken your things, of course, if you cooperate, they will be returned to you soon."
The elderly man slowly set down the parchment and spoke calmly.
The flickering candlelight revealed his appearance behind the parchment.
And after seeing his face clearly, Count Yulster’s expression changed drastically.
For it was not just anyone, but one of the standing elders of the Nais Clan Elder Council, and an even older member of the third generation of Bloodline Dukes who usually didn’t get along with Duke Yoroc—Maxim Nais.
"Elder Maxim?! It’s actually you!"
"You... indeed haven’t given up cooperating with the Blood Demon Sect, have you!"
"What exactly do you want to do? Kidnapping me... Are you really going to break completely with Lord Yoroc?!"
Count Yulster said angrily.
Elder Maxim looked at him indifferently, chuckled lightly, and said:
"Heh, a break? My relationship with Yoroc has never been good, how can there be any talk of breaking?"
"Then why did you attack me? Joining forces with the Blood Demon Sect to attack a fellow Bloodline, aren’t you afraid of provoking the wrath of the Great Elder?! By sabotaging Lord Duke’s negotiation plans with Castel, are you trying to ruin the Returning Star Plan?"
Count Yulster continued to speak angrily.
Elder Maxim chuckled lightly and said:
"Yulster, there’s no need for you to fish for information. I’ve been overturning coffins longer than the time you’ve spent in eternal sleep combined, put away your probing little thoughts, the Great Elder’s title can’t press down on me."
"As for destroying the Returning Star Plan... Heh, the one who will destroy the Returning Star Plan and Nais is Yoroc, as for me... I am actually considering the future of Nais seriously."
"Hah, negotiating with Castel, it’s stupid he thought of that! He really is regressing with age, to think that he would pin his hopes on an elusive, questionable ’deity’!"
Count Yulster’s eyes widened:
"You... are you mad? All of Lord Yoroc’s actions have been approved by the Elder Council, after being observed by the Great Elder!"
"You... are you questioning the Elder Council, questioning the Great Elder?!"
Elder Maxim gave him a meaningful look and said profoundly:
"Oh? The Great Elder’s Observation?"
"Yulster, let me tell you a secret that even your Lord Duke doesn’t know."
"Our Great Elder, His Excellency, has not heard the voice of a deity for nearly five hundred years."
"Rise or fall, Divine Favored, he who is favored by deities... has actually lost the power of Observation long ago."
The Great Elder... has lost the power of Observation?
No! Wait... The Great Elder has not heard the voice of deities for hundreds of years?!
Count Yulster’s eyes widened.
As if connecting to something, his complexion gradually turned deathly pale.
Seeing his appearance, Elder Maxim said with profound meaning:
"It seems, you’ve already thought of it."
"That’s right... the deity we serve, it is feared, has fallen into a true ’Eternal Sleep’."
