Chapter 210: -21- The old man is so cute_2
Sebastian’s old face turned red, and then he straightened up, regaining his elegance and respectfully said,
This fellow clearly wanted to say "cute" at first, but he probably realized just as the word was about to leave his lips that calling a "deity" cute might not be very respectful, so he switched to beautiful instead.
Charlotte didn’t mind.
She knew she was indeed very cute.
Every morning, the first thing she did upon waking up was to admire her own peerless beauty in the mirror, privately remarking, "This old man is truly adorable," which would leave her in a good mood for the entire day.
It served as a kind of consolation, she supposed. Even though her gender had changed, when she thought about it, many people longed to cross over into a pretty and adorable little vampire with cheats and riches yet couldn’t manage to do so!
...
After Charlotte finished applying makeup, Sebastian did likewise.
Soon, a fresh pair of werewolf siblings was ready to go.
The only problem was that the sister was much shorter than her brother, making them look more like father and daughter.
Charlotte’s current body was clearly of the late-blooming variety, looking like a twelve or thirteen-year-old at the age of fourteen or fifteen. After becoming a vampire and assuming her final form, she stopped growing.
But Charlotte was still quite pleased.
Apart from her unfortunate height, at least she didn’t have the cumbersome appearance of Charlotte after she had grown up under the True Ancestor’s posture.
As the two of them got ready to leave, Nisi had already prepared himself.
He seemed to have grown fatter, especially his round belly, which looked like he hadn’t held back on eating while everyone else was busy.
"Meow! Lord Charlotte, you’re finally ready! When do we leave?!"
Nisi seemed quite excited about being taken on an escapade by the great "deity" and sprang in front of Charlotte with his cat tail held high.
However, Charlotte looked at him and thought to herself that if she took him to a pet clinic, the vet would definitely tell her that her cat was severely overweight, needed a diet, or else he might develop arthritis or heart problems and shorten his lifespan, and she quickly fell into deep thought.
"A pair of werewolf siblings struggling in life shouldn’t have such a fat pet cat, right?"
She glanced at her and Sebastian’s patch-covered clothes and turned to ask.
"No, unless it’s food they carry with them, since werewolves eat meat, after all,"
Sebastian said with a smile.
Nisi: ...
Charlotte sighed, crouched down, and patted Nisi’s chubby cat head:
"Nisi, you really need to lose weight."
With that, she walked past the Black Cat and headed out.
Sebastian also patted Nisi’s head in passing, sighing:
"Lord Nisi, did you hear that? The master wants you to lose weight. When we return, let’s not ride in the carriage anymore; instead, get some exercise and run a bit."
Nisi: ...
...
Although Nisi was as fat as a pig disguised as a cat, Charlotte still took him along.
Not as a pet held in her arms but letting it follow behind on its own, melding with the night to sneak in.
After all, its fur was black, and at night without any lights, it was practically invisible. The supervisors of the mine were not Sub-humans with exceptionally strong night vision but human Nobles.
The Castel silver mine was located to the east of the Silver Mining City, spanning both inside and outside the city.
This was not the original site of silver mining; the first mining spots were elsewhere, but as mining continued unabated for hundreds of years, the mines grew deeper, and the main mining area shifted here.
The underground veins of the Castel family were extensive, divided into a southern and a northern area. The Southern area was the largest, belonging to the New Moon Royal Family, while the Northern area was smaller and owned by the Castel family itself.
The two areas were actually interconnected, with their regular management jointly conducted by the Castel Mining Workshop, a subsidiary of the Castel family.
Initially, the Mining Workshop was wholly owned by the Castel Main Family, but after hundreds of years of successive partitioning and division of interests, the Main Family’s ownership had dwindled to less than fifty percent, with just over fifty percent dispersed among other noble families of the Castel lineage.
It’s worth mentioning that the New Moon Royal Family does not engage in the operations of the Mining Workshop; they only collect silver bars and mithril, and they station supervisors and troops in the Workshop, a full fifteen hundred strong.
This was another point of Charlotte’s bewilderment.
If there really was a dragon in the mines, why hadn’t the New Moon Royal Family’s supervisors and troops reacted?
It was known that those stationed by the New Moon Royal Family in such roles must be Transcendents, and at the very least Second Tier of the Silver Moon.
As for the troops, there was no need to say more; Charlotte had encountered the Kingdom’s Regular Army escorting the Third Prince Philip on her way to Castel, and their overall strength was also formidable.
A giant dragon might be strong, but with the power of the New Moon Royal Family, dispatching troops to slay it would not be difficult.
Unless that giant dragon was legendary.
But a legendary giant dragon wouldn’t let humans mine on its forehead and dining plate.
Or maybe... there’s actually no dragon in the mining area at all? Could there be some other secret?
Charlotte pondered.
With various doubts, Charlotte arrived as promised, meeting the werewolf Luf outside the mining area at the agreed time.
Luf clearly froze for a moment upon seeing Charlotte’s appearance.
"How about it? Do I look the part?"
Charlotte asked with a smile.
Luf nodded, his face full of emotion,
"Yes... it’s very convincing... If I didn’t know it was you, from a distance, I would really think I had encountered a member of my tribe."
"From a distance? Does that mean... there are flaws up close?"
Charlotte’s mind raced, catching the key point in Luf’s words.
Luf scratched his head, hesitant to speak.
"Go ahead, it’s alright."
Charlotte encouraged.
Luf hesitated for a moment before steeling himself and saying,
"It might be only werewolves with their keen sense of smell who would notice, humans probably wouldn’t..."
Saying this, he glanced at Charlotte, carefully adding,
"You smell too good."
Charlotte: ...
Luf’s words made her suddenly realize a problem.
That is, no matter how well she disguised herself, she couldn’t change the fact that she was a noble who bathed every day.
The natives of Mireya weren’t as hygienic as she was, let alone the werewolves who constantly roamed and did various hard labor.
Indeed, the Bloodline was very skilled at concealing their presence.
But that was about hiding the aura of magic power, not the scent.
Charlotte couldn’t help but turn to Black Cat Nisi.
As a sensitively perceptive, mysterious Transcendent creature, she didn’t believe this creature had failed to notice this flaw.
Feeling Charlotte’s gaze, Nisi also seemed a bit uncomfortable, it cleared its throat and said,
"Cough cough... Lord Charlotte, we haven’t entered the mineshaft yet, have we? I’ve prepared a spell to conceal our scent."
Charlotte then nodded with satisfaction.
"Hm, with Lord Nisi’s word, there should be no problems."
Luf the werewolf said.
Nisi cast a scent-concealing spell on Charlotte and Sebastian, and thereafter, the two, along with the cat, followed Luf into the mining area.
At the entrance to the mining area, there were already some miners waiting. There seemed to be about twenty people, all of them Sub-humans; they had distinct beastly traits but with appearances leaning towards human aesthetics.
And most of them were werewolves.
These miners were of both genders, old and young. Charlotte even spotted a werewolf boy who seemed to be about her age, filthy and both skinny and frail.
Of course, though he seemed about her age, she looked younger than her actual age, and considering that Sub-humans had lifespans similar to humans, the boy was probably just a twelve or thirteen-year-old child.
At the head was an elderly werewolf miner, hunched over with a wine pouch slung around his waist.
Upon seeing Luf, he wrinkled his brow slightly,
"Why are you so late today?"
As he spoke, his gaze fell on Charlotte and Sebastian who were behind Luf, looking somewhat puzzled.
"Old Logan, these are tribespeople from our clan, Barce and his sister Resa. Tanan and Roca couldn’t make it tonight due to some matters, so they volunteered to fill in for the night."
Luf spoke gravely.
