Chapter 177: -7- Attack from the Undead_2
Because the terrain was full of low mountains and hills, the roads in the Violet Duchy were not particularly easy to travel, but Castel’s caravan’s speed was not slow.
It wasn’t that they had accelerated, but rather, there were so few gathering points in Violet that nobles’ castles and cities were rare as well.
With fewer places to stop, and with Charlotte’s order to hurry along, the caravan naturally moved quickly.
Different from the Moon Guardian Duchy and Bold Duchy, even the smallest villages in Violet often had tall wooden walls.
As for the towns built around the castles, they had sturdy stone walls that looked like fortresses.
Charlotte knew this was another result of the decades-long Star Moon War.
For the subjects of Violet, only tall walls could provide them with enough security.
Charlotte could clearly feel the scars the Star Moon War had left on this duchy.
Along the way, many of the villages they passed through were deeply cautious of Castel’s caravan, tightly closing their palisades or city gates, only allowing them to enter and rest after the caravan revealed its identity and garnered sufficient trust.
Of course, once the villagers knew the identity of the caravan, they became extremely hospitable, as the northern Castel was seen as a land of plenty and an object of desire for the desolate Violet.
The Violet Duchy was indeed much poorer.
Charlotte could feel this even from the nobles’ banquets she attended here, which overall felt even less grand than those of equivalent rank in Bold, whether it was the castles’ decorations or the banquet food, all seemed somewhat shabby.
However, in contrast, Charlotte noticed that the military strength of the Violet people was much stronger than that of Bold and even the Moon Guardian Duchy.
In the nobles’ castles, there was a high proportion of Transcendents, and even a Baron would have tier-entering men among his followers.
It was the same in the villages, where the militias guarding the villages were almost exclusively Transcendents.
Charlotte guessed that this was closely related to the Violet Duchy’s magic power, which was clearly higher than other areas.
However, unlike the enthusiastic villagers, although the Violet nobles were extremely hospitable when inviting Charlotte, the perceptive Charlotte could sense their underlying distance beneath their courtesy at the banquets.
Despite their proper exterior conduct, Charlotte could feel that the Violet nobles did not welcome her.
However, she did not care. It was just a passage, and not being welcomed just spared her the trouble of tedious socializing.
After bidding farewell to yet another Lord, Castel’s caravan continued onward, entering the northern part of the Violet Duchy.
Here, human settlements were even sparser, and the trees more luxuriant.
The north of Violet was where the vast Violet Forest spanned the north of New Moon Kingdom; beyond the forest was the Castel Domain.
As for the Capital Mansion of Linte City in Violet... located a bit further west, Charlotte, traveling northeast, would not pass by and naturally would not visit the Duke of Violet there.
The Violet Forest covered a vast area, and it would take days to cross the entire forest.
Fortunately, the merchant groups accompanying Castel had arrived at their destinations one after another, each going their separate ways.
Now, only a few merchant groups with Castel as their destination remained, and the number of people in the entire caravan had dropped to less than seven hundred.
With fewer people, the groups were smaller, thus the caravan’s speed could be a bit faster.
Even so, it would take at least three days to cross the Violet Forest, and during these three days, the entire caravan would have to spend the nights in the forest.
That night, the moonlight, like clear water, shone through the dense woods, illuminating the forest floor.
The caravan that had been traveling all day set up camp around the wagons, erecting tents and lighting campfires.
Around the camp, they spread a circle of Avila Spice, a spice that repels demon beasts and insects, ensuring the camp’s safety.
Of course, relying solely on spice was not secure since the forest was home to many demon beasts, some of which were immune, so the Transcendent Knights were stationed on the edges of the camp, always vigilant.
Ordinary people naturally stayed within the camp, as did the accompanying merchants. The nights in the forest were cold, and they gathered around the crackling campfires, rubbing their hands to keep warm while listening to a traveling bard among them play and sing ancient ballads.
From time to time, the howling of unknown demon beasts could be heard deep within the forest, startling flocks of bats and birds, making the nocturnal jungle seem all the more mysterious and dangerous, causing the commoners in the camp to shiver involuntarily and huddle closer together for reassurance.
Charlotte, however, greatly enjoyed this environment.
The night was the Bloodline’s home field, and as a natural magic creature, Charlotte was quite fond of the high-magic environment of the Violet Forest.
She stayed alone in her tent, eyes closed in meditation, while reviewing the various Bloodline magic spells she had learned.
Her body would suddenly turn into a cloud of black mist with a ’poof’ or transform into countless black bats in a ’swish’...
The Misty Shadow under Dark Resonance and the Dark Night Bat under Wild Resonance were truly mastered by her.
And the next moment, the bat transformed back into the shape of a young girl, only now she had a pair of huge bat wings protruding from her back.
A flash of crimson swept through Charlotte’s eyes, as a shadowy mass emerged around her, swiftly concealing her in the darkness of the night.
Charlotte leaped up and flew out of the tent.
Nobody noticed her movement.
Only Sebastian couldn’t help but glance towards the sky, quickly returning his gaze after sensing a familiar presence, and continued to lazily hold his wine goblet, sipping the fine wine.
Charlotte flapped her bat wings and soared into the sky, initially unsteady, but soon she stabilized and began to fly smoothly, joyously unleashing the power of the Bloodline.
She always had to conceal her identity, being cautious wherever she went, not to expose her powers, and it was only in the depths of the Violet Forest that she could revel in the might of the Transcendent without any reservations.
Charlotte, who had mastered more than a dozen Bloodline magics, had long since surpassed her former self, even without invoking the power of True Ancestor Liberation!
However, just as Charlotte was about to take a stroll in the nearby woods, a piercing scream suddenly tore through the night sky.
Charlotte’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly put aside her playful mood, descending back to the ground.
Reverting to her normal appearance, Charlotte approached the edge of the campsite.
Here, several Transcendent Knights were picking up weapons, preparing to head into the forest.
"What happened?"
Charlotte inquired.
Upon seeing the young girl, the knights respectfully bowed and then said:
"Count, it’s Darren. He has just gone into the woods... to relieve himself, fearing that he might have encountered a Demon Beast..."
"A Demon Beast? Didn’t he take Avila Spice with him?"
Charlotte frowned and asked.
The knights looked at one another, but no one had an answer to that question.
A thick scent of blood gradually wafted from the woods, causing Charlotte’s heart to jump again.
"Let’s go have a look together,"
she said with a solemn demeanor.
As she led the way into the forest, the knights hurriedly followed.
But when Charlotte entered the dense woods, she soon found the Transcendent Knight Darren lying on the ground.
Only now, he was dead.
His death was brutal and horrifying; his armor was completely torn off, and his body was covered in claw marks as if mauled by a wild beast, with his chest and abdomen gruesomely ripped open...
And a shadow enveloped in darkness crouched atop his body, greedily tearing at his blood and flesh.
"Blood... Blood Demon?!"
The guards by Charlotte’s side, two Transcendent Knights, widened their eyes and couldn’t help exclaiming in alarm.
But Charlotte’s gaze focused intently.
"No... it’s not a Blood Demon..."
Observing the shadow in the darkness, she narrowed her eyes:
"It’s an Undead."
The clouds concealing the moonlight dispersed, and the silver light of the moon pierced through the branches, illuminating the figure in the dark.
The knights could now see the attacker clearly.
It indeed wasn’t a monster-like Blood Demon, but rather a living corpse clad in tattered armor, its body decaying.
In its eye sockets, a chilling green fire flickered ominously.
And at that moment, a series of roars emanated from the depths of the woods.
One after another, green "lanterns" lit up in the dense jungle, countless and innumerable...
