Chapter 42: Chapter 42: Book of Eras
Yang Qizhou first clicked on the ’Destiny Store,’ and the list immediately appeared before him.
Destiny Fire Bottle (Consumable Item): Can restore consumed Destiny Power, granting the game character one more resurrection opportunity. Price: 100 Old Sacrifice.
False Road Marker (Consumable Item): After a game character’s death, they can resurrect in another location. Price: 100 Old Sacrifice.
Fellow’s Interaction (Consumable Item): Allows a game character to intersect with the nearest player on the map. Price: 200 Old Sacrifice.
Destiny Chain (Consumable Item): Allows you to team up with a designated player to explore the current map together. Price: 500 Old Sacrifice.
Fragment of the Book of Eras (Special Item): You can randomly obtain a fragment of the Book of Eras and learn about monumental events that once occurred on the ancient earth from it. Note: The Book of Eras has 99 pages; when all are collected, you can acquire the quasi-mythical item ’Book of Eras.’ Price: 2000 Old Sacrifice.
[Destiny Fire Bottle], [False Road Marker], [Fellow’s Interaction]—these items Yang Qizhou had heard about from ’The Leopard,’ so he was somewhat familiar with them. However, the effect of [Destiny Chain] caught him by surprise.
It turns out that not only can players intersect within the storyline, but they can also team up to explore the current map together.
As for this [Fragment of the Book of Eras]...
"Holy crap, that’s amazing! So you’re saying I just need to spend 200,000 Old Sacrifices to buy a quasi-mythical item?"
Get money, get money, I’m itching to get money right now.
Seeing the words "quasi-mythical," Yang Qizhou’s eyes turned red, his mind instantly overwhelmed by a craving for ’Old Sacrifices.’
It took quite a while for him to calm his slightly agitated heart. Yang Qizhou continued scrolling through the list, only to see this message...
"Your current status is insufficient; the Level 2 Destiny Store is not open for sale."
Basically, it’s just disdaining the game character for being too weak and unqualified to see better items, huh?
Just you wait! When the day comes that I strike it rich, with billions of Old Sacrifices at hand, I’ll buy every last thing in your lousy store to show you.
Damn it.
Yang Qizhou angrily closed the ’Destiny Store’ and opened the ’Destiny Exchange,’ but to his surprise, it turned out to be completely empty, not even a single item listed.
So desolate?
Yang Qizhou was stunned for a moment before quickly understanding.
The game [Deceit World] hasn’t been around for long. Everyone is groping their way forward in the dark, finding even a ’Mortal Level’ item is incredibly difficult, like cherishing a prized treasure. Where would they find spare items to list in the ’Destiny Exchange’ for auction?
Take Yang Qizhou himself, for example,
He could definitely be considered a "rich man" right now, possessing quasi-legendary items like [Hidden God’s Clothes] and [Wind Bell Town’s Law Book], epic-level items like [Holy Redemption] and [Silver Holy Object], a super excellent item like [Shepherd Dog Field Key], an excellent item like [Ancient God Fire Lamp], a quasi-excellent item like [Stone of Truth], and even a mortal-level item like [Kan Rui’s Wizard Ring].
But even though he had many treasures, they each played their own role, displaying specific effects in certain situations. Even the lowest-tier [Kan Rui’s Wizard Ring] was indispensable—its ability to enhance physical stamina and grant night vision made Yang Qizhou unwilling to part with it.
Let alone other players.
However, over time, as players acquired more treasures, they might start to have items they could replace. At that point, they might list things for auction, and the ’Destiny Exchange’ would finally become lively.
Closing the ’Destiny Exchange,’ Yang Qizhou stretched deeply, his face clouded with gloom as though he had recalled something.
"Damn, that damn ’Abyss Old God’ forced me to end the game early today."
Yang Qizhou had every reason to be in a foul mood.
He still had three remaining opportunities to use [Dark Crow of Profane Fortune]. By his original plan, it would be enough to allow his character to obtain [Destiny Redemption] and return to Fire Stealing Village. But that damned ’Abyss Old God,’ not content with being ungrateful, didn’t just kill him once, but camped on his corpse to chase and kill, leaving him no chance to reload his save, exhausting all three resurrection opportunities.
If not for the decent loot—two epic-level items he obtained.
Yang Qizhou would have cursed its ancestors for eighteen generations straight.
Game text continued refreshing.
"Unable to use [Dark Crow of Profane Fortune] to cheat, you chose to borrow the power of destiny to rewrite your death ending."
"You reopened your eyes in a wilderness where mystery and the unknown coexist."
"You..."
Done for the night. Time to sleep, time to sleep.
Yang Qizhou stretched fiercely again, once more mentally cursing the ancestors of the ’Abyss Old God.’ If not for its treacherous corpse-camping pursuit, he wouldn’t have saved his three remaining chances to use [Dark Crow of Profane Fortune].
Night fell,
Yang Qizhou dreamed that he ground the ’Abyss Old God’ into dust, stabbing it with spikes, burning it with fire, drowning it in water, then slicing its flesh piece by piece with a small knife, putting it through all ten tortures before finally venting some of his anger.
...
...
The next morning,
Yang Qizhou, a seasoned [Deceit World] player, rated A+ by the ’Deceit Bureau’ as a lamp holder, possessor of two quasi-legendary items and two epic-level items, and achiever of the Destiny Achievement ’Enemy of the Divine,’ was heading out to work again.
There wasn’t much he could do about it.
Working three days of part-time jobs earned him 900 bucks, which was just enough to handle basic food needs. But what about rent? Last month’s rent was already delayed, and now adding this month’s rent—if it weren’t for Ding Xiaolan’s kind-hearted mother, he’d have been evicted by any other landlord long ago.
As for using the bizarre tricks he got from [Deceit World] to earn some shady money?
Yang Qizhou had never even considered doing that.
The reasons were many: it might attract attention from the ’Deceit Bureau,’ it could get him targeted by other [Deceit World] players, and so on and so forth...
But the most important reason was... he didn’t want to sink into the twisted worldview of "resorting to violence to achieve goals."
Life might be a bit mundane right now, but at least it’s peaceful.
"Oh? Sister Xin, what a coincidence! Are you heading out too?"
As Yang Qizhou stepped out the door, he saw his landlord Zhao Xin and her daughter Ding Xiaolan coming out of their house.
The landlord’s full name was Zhao Xin, a gorgeous woman with an air of elegance. Though she was already a mother, her charm hadn’t faded; her flat stomach was free of any excess fat, her fashionable attire was perfectly fitted, and every glance she cast held a captivating allure.
Their relationship was quite good. Zhao Xin knew how hard it was for Yang Qizhou to struggle alone in the Capital City, so every time she made dumplings or anything delicious, she’d have her little bean sprout daughter deliver him a portion. Last month, when he failed to pay rent, she hadn’t pressed him about it. If it weren’t for Sister Xin’s help, Yang Qizhou might not have been able to stay in the Capital City this long.
Seeing Yang Qizhou, Zhao Xin smiled warmly. "Ah, Qizhou, today there’s an animation exhibition at Diamond Square. I’m planning to take Xiaolan to check it out."
Going to an animation exhibition, huh? Just a kid after all.
I still remember when I was seven, I was already fighting all the other kids in the village...
"Qizhou bro, don’t go to work anymore, okay? Play with me today!" Ding Xiaolan jumped around and called out, her eyes sparkling mischievously.
Yang Qizhou shook his head. "No can do, little bean sprout. I didn’t pay last month’s rent, I don’t have this month’s rent yet, let alone next month’s rent. If I don’t go to work, your mom might kick me out."
Kick you out?
It seemed like those words struck a nerve with Ding Xiaolan, as she couldn’t help shouting loudly.
"No way, no way! Qizhou bro still has to play with me! Fine, go to work, hmph, but you better buy me some chips as compensation when you come back!"
"No problem, thank you very much."
Zhao Xin laughed as she watched her daughter getting along well with Yang Qizhou. "Xiaolan just loves being mischievous. Serious matters must come first; don’t spoil her too much."
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, Zhao Xin took Ding Xiaolan and left.
Yang Qizhou also headed out for work.
On the way, Yang Qizhou lifted his hand and saw a pitch-black crow emerging on the back of it, while eerie insights reverberated in his mind.
"To accompany Ding Xiaolan or not—the choice actually overwrites the save point for some reason. What a bizarre setup."
