Chapter 96: You’re not you when you’re hungry

The next day was a hard day. Maxwell, who had finished his meeting yesterday, but had to rush back home after Michael had called him, was in a foul mood after their discussion last night.

He was of the belief that being around Andrew during his heat was going to be bad for Andrew. He had thought that he would have more time before his next heat came. Time that Andrew could use to adapt to his body, and Maxwell would have felt more comfortable having him assist with his heat.

But time waits for no one, and is fickle.

Of course, Maxwell wouldn’t have gone to anyone else to get help with his heat, but he probably would have taken suppressants.

That Michael had secretly told Andrew that they were not compatible with Maxwell’s body.

Maxwell was an anomaly in the industry. Suppressants didn’t really work on him. It was the reason he was so dedicated to his work. Each step he took forward for everyone else, was a step closer to Maxwell living a normal life. A life where he wasn’t living terrified of an alpha forcing him into doing something he didn’t want to do.

God, Andrew worried greatly about if or when Maxwell ran into his father. He might have already. Because Andrew remembered what his father was like, and sure, betas couldn’t really sense pheromones like the other two, but that didn’t mean Andrew was an idiot. He’d seen the omegas that had been in the cars with him when he’d come to visit. The glassy look in their eyes.

Andrew didn’t hate the man who fathered him for no good reason.

Who the fuck showed up to the mother of his child’s home with other people in their car? And pretended like there weren’t other people in their lives? All because they were mated, and she couldn’t smell them on you anymore?

Disgusting.

Andrew didn’t remember how old he was the first time he noticed it happening, but he remembered that it happened more than once. Hell, Andrew had probably met the mother of one of his brothers or sisters. That also made him sick.

How many siblings did he actually have?

Either way, Maxwell’s body didn’t handle suppressants well, and he was trying to get Michael to agree with him. Michael was of the firm belief that if Andrew spent a heat with an omega, it could potentially speed up his progress as a true alpha, but in a good way. At least, from Michael’s perspective.

He believed that Andrew was progressing slowly into becoming a true alpha. He had that belief because he was reading several journals on the natural progression of true alphas, as well as alpha manifestors. He probably also had some secret information he wasn’t allowed to disclose, and Andrew was fine with that. Michael was a Doctor, and there was simply some things you shouldn’t tell your friends.

Either way, he was convinced Andrew was on the slower side of progression. It’d almost been a month since Andrew ’manifested’. So far, all he had to show for it was his pheromones, and now, his lack of teeth. Michael wasn’t sure what else should have happened, but he believed that several other things should have happened by now.

And since Andrew responded well to Maxwell’s pheromones, and found comfort in them, if he spent a heat with him there was a chance that he could progress in the right direction.

Andrew didn’t fully agree with his words, but he would use anything to convince Maxwell to let him spend his heat with him. He did not want to spend the week tending to a sicky Maxwell in the worst way, and would rather spend it with a Maxwell who wanted to crawl into Andrew’s skin. The second option seemed easier to handle, and a lot more fun.

Plus, they still had time till the wedding. Andrew was doing his best to sell Maxwell spending his heat with Andrew as a positive. It would probably help stabilize his pheromones. He’d be more confident as a true alpha. Maybe his dick would get bigger. Blah, blah, blah. Anything to convince Maxwell.

Andrew was sure he almost had him at the bigger dick thing, but Maxwell was a hard shell to crack.

So, Maxwell was busy with work, and Andrew was busy with lessons with Michael, baking, and more lessons with Michael. Both of them knew Maxwell wasn’t doing well when he came downstairs and crawled into Andrew’s lap while Michael was still over and buried his head into Andrew’s neck. His arms wrapped around Andrew’s neck, his grip tight, and everyone could hear him inhale Andrew’s scent.

Andrew could also tell that his pheromones had gained a distinctive quality. The ability to wrap around him seductively, slowly, and oh so carefully as to not alert Michael.

Quietly, because he did genuinely like having Maxwell pressed against him in any capacity, he wrapped his arms around Maxwell as if he was holding him tighter, which he was, but he also messaged Michael about the pheromones.

He watched as Michael read the message, and his eyes went wide. The message back confirmed Andrew’s concern.

Maxwell’s heat was at the most, only two days away.

Michael and Andrew were working behind the scenes to make sure that everyone was put into place when Maxwell’s heat overtook him. It wasn’t because either one of them thought poorly of the other man, or that he was incapable to do it.

Both men knew that Maxwell could run circles around them in this field.

No, they were more worried that Maxwell would use it as an excuse to leave the house, and then flee from Andrew and hide himself to handle his heat on his own. Andrew believed that he would.

Maxwell was stubborn, and he didn’t like to be out of control. Heats and ruts were an out of control feeling, and Maxwell and Andrew hadn’t built enough trust yet for Maxwell to be okay with him taking care of him.

It didn’t hurt Andrew to admit that. But it probably hurt Maxwell. Because Andrew had been willing to give Maxwell all parts of him, but Maxwell was more reserved in that regard. And Andrew didn’t blame him.

He’d been his bodyguard on a few of the ’dates’ that his parents had sent him on. The alphas had all been trash. They had said the right things to his parents, but to Maxwell? And the beta guard who he had brought?

Terrible, terrible men.

So, Andrew turned to his only resource he had on Maxwell’s side. His parents. He’d now been accepted at such a high level that he felt he could go above Maxwell’s head and tell them what was happening. And that they would agree with him.

He was right, and with Michael’s support and documentation of symptoms, Maxwell’s Mom had realised how close he was, and that Andrew was the likely trigger for this. It was the only thing that made sense.

Both of Maxwell’s parents agreed to help out in any way that they could, and both reached out to Mr. Newman to get Maxwell’s schedule for the next week and a bit. It was apparently a common thing that all the family members did. Their ruts and heats fell at different times of the year, and thus everyone was cross trained to take over and help out.

Andrew hadn’t known that, and it had warmed his heart to hear that. It was cute, and also made Andrew wonder why Maxwell thought his family didn’t care. But at the same time...Andrew would admit that they had a poor way of displaying that care.

Of course, their sneakiness didn’t last. Maxwell eventually found out what they were doing.

Andrew had expected a full blow out. A yelling, angry shouting match where Andrew would have to apologise, and grovel and beg for forgiveness. It was worse then that.

Maxwell had seemed tired, deflated. He had found out through Mr. Newman, who wasn’t going to lie to his employer.

"My parents agreed with you?" He had asked, and Andrew felt his heart ache at the way he had spoken the words. Like something solid in him was damaged.

"Y-Yeah. Your Mom was the most insistent that she help out." Maxwell, who was still impeccably dressed, but his hair was askew, ran his hands over his face.

This confrontation happened in the living room as Andrew and Michael had been in the middle of a medical lecture, while also helping Maxwell’s parents get his new schedule. Maxwell had begun to not look well, and it worried Andrew, but Michael said it was normal. It was obvious that like Andrew, Maxwell was stubborn and was fighting the heat.

"Fuck." Maxwell exclaimed, before he glanced at the two of them. They both looked guilty, and were worried about how he would handle their interference. "Do I look that fucking bad?" He muttered, and Andrew’s eyes went wide. Michael swallowed, before he cleared his throat.

"You certainly don’t look...well, Mr. Beckett." He started. "And we just want to make sure that you...don’t avoid Andrew because of this. Andrew is holding up well, and it isn’t as if you are going to go have your heat with anyone else." Maxwell’s face crumpled, and he covered it up quickly.

Andrew got up, going to him, and wrapping his arms around his shoulders, embracing him softly. Hiding his collapse from Michael. Andrew knew Maxwell would never want to show that to anyone else.

"We just wanted to make sure that everything you worked for was safe with the sudden heat. That’s all." Andrew spoke softly, and Maxwell exhaled slowly.

"Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck." He repeated, and Andrew didn’t know if that was a good thing, or a bad thing. It took about 20 minutes before he found out the answer.
