Chapter 62: A family that works together...
"Andrew’s secrets are my secrets, Benjamin. So if he told you any of those, he did spill them." Maxwell warned, and Ben’s shoulders continued to shake.
"You’re so possessive Max. What are you going to do if you scare Dr. Knox away?" Ben teased, and Maxwell’s grip on Andrew’s arm tightened.
"He hasn’t run away yet, and we’ve known each other for months. If he was going to run away, he shouldn’t have come back to my house." Maxwell’s beautiful voice got a slight growl to it, and Andrew’s heart thumped. Oh shit. That was hot.
"Max, we’re neighbours." Andrew interjected, and Maxwell sniffed.
"I stand by what I said. If you didn’t want to be possessed by me, you should have avoided me after you broke up." Andrew’s eyes went wide. He was pretty sure this was the first time he’d heard this, and from the way Maxwell’s ears turned pink, he was embarrassed as well.
"Wait, you had plans to-"
"I believe I did tell you that I liked you while you were in your previous relationship, Andrew." The room went quiet as Andrew’s jaw dropped. He did remember that, but he hadn’t paid it much attention before. But he should have, especially if Maxwell was getting this pouty, slightly annoyed and embarrassed look on his face.
"I...why on earth would you?" Andrew’s honest thoughts came out of his mouth, and Maxwell blinked, before turning an angry gaze towards him.
"Now listen here, Dr. Knox. Don’t you dare speak poorly of my boyfriend, even if you are him." Maxwell started, waving around the snifter of scotch. Worried, Andrew took it out of his hand, but that only made Maxwell more angry. "See? Look at this. You are too damn considerate for your own good!" Andrew was at a loss for words.
"I’m...sorry?" He suggested, but that didn’t soothe Maxwell.
"Don’t think you can just apologise your way out of this. You are a good man, Andrew. Who the hell wouldn’t fall in love with someone as kind as you are?" Maxwell snorted. "Do you know how many times I took advantage of your kindness?" Maxwell demanded, and Andrew blinked.
"But I liked helping you out." Andrew insisted and Maxwell scoffed.
"This here is the fucking problem! You’re too nice! If you don’t have me around, someone is going to take advantage of you!" Maxwell was insistent, and Andrew stared at how red his ears were before it finally clicked.
This was how Maxwell was trying to justify staying beside him. With so many people around, Maxwell wasn’t his usual calm, sensual self that he was in private. He had to put on a show, especially since this was around his family. He was basically declaring his undying love for Andrew in front of everyone, and if that didn’t warm Andrew’s heart he was a monster.
"Well, I guess you’re right. It isn’t like it hasn’t happened before, right?" Andrew countered, and Maxwell, who had been ready to go off on another tangent, froze. Andrew smiled. "After all, I am a good target, aren’t I? My Mom used to worry I would go to someone if they offered me candy as a kid. With Maxwell around, no one is going to try to do that, are they?" Maxwell’s face turned a slight pink shade as Andrew bent, smiling at Maxwell.
Andrew couldn’t help it. Everything this man did he found endearing.
"Y-Yeah. You’re right. That’s why you need me." Maxwell’s anger was washed away and Andrew smiled at him with great affection.
"I am happy that I have Maxwell in my life. How else would I manage?" Andrew’s words were sincere, and that only made Maxwell’s cheeks warmer. He was good at dishing in public, but not as great at receiving. It was something they were going to have to work on.
"Ha ha. I feel like I should have been asking when you two are getting married!" Maxwell’s Father teased, and both of them froze.
Ben, sensing a change, took over the conversation quickly before either of them had to answer.
"Ha ha. Isn’t that a little bit too soon? They should at least wait till Amir and I are married, don’t you think? It’d be respectful to mind their manners. After all, I am the eldest of us brothers." Will tsked.
"If they were trying to be respectful, they’d wait until after I got married." Ben’s gaze sharpened.
"Oh? So when do you plan to do that? In the next 20 years?" An icy silence filled the air and all worries about comments about Andrew and Maxwell faded quickly.
In fact, shortly after Ben’s comment, Will and his partner left. Will was furious, while his partner seemed upset. Andrew could understand, especially if that was Will’s response.
After saying goodbye to Maxwell’s parents, who promised to stop by for a visit soon, Maxwell and Andrew rode the elevator down with the other couple.
"Sorry Andrew. I didn’t mean to get you in between family drama, but Will is always like this." Ben offered with a sigh. "He competes against us, and was especially upset when he heard that Max was bringing someone today." Andrew opened his mouth, before glancing at Maxwell nervously.
"Does he...not have a stable partner?" Andrew asked Ben, but it was Maxwell who answered.
"He’s a manwhore. He’ll sleep with anything that moves." Maxwell snorted. "Doesn’t help that he got most of Mother’s looks. Everyone falls into his lap." Andrew stared at Maxwell. He was a copy of his Mother with his Father’s hair, yet he called Will the copy?
Glancing at Ben, who shrugged, Andrew turned back to Maxwell.
"Then who was his partner for the evening?" That made the air in the elevator tense.
"That’s...his fiancé." Ah.
"How long have they been engaged?" Andrew asked. It was the soft spoken Amir who answered, with bitterness in his tone.
"Longer than Benjamin and I have known each other." So that meant the little omega knew exactly what his partner was like. Fuck.
"Does he at least sleep around like your brother does?" All three stared at Andrew, surprised, and Andrew frowned. "What? It would be a fitting punishment, I think. If you are going to treat someone one way, you should treat them the same way back." Ben laughed, clapping Andrew on the shoulder as the elevator doors opened on the main floor.
"You, Andrew, are hilarious. Please tell us if you can make it to the wedding. I think we would love to have you there, especially if you tell Will that to his face." Ben’s laughing smile followed them out into the lobby of the giant skyscraper, and down to the street where two cars sat waiting to take them home.
"We’ll do our best. If Dr. Smith doesn’t give him the go ahead, I’ll let you know." Maxwell told his older brother, and Ben nodded.
"Welcome to the family, Andrew." Ben offered, before helping Amir into the car and they sped off. Maxwell got into the car, a smile on his face as Andrew closed the door behind him.
"That wasn’t so bad, now was it?" Maxwell offered, as if he wasn’t the one who had hated every moment prior to arriving. Andrew laughed, wrapping his arm around Maxwell’s shoulder and pulling him close.
"I think it could have gone way worse. I was expecting to walk into a t.v. drama, but for the most part it was fairly normal." Maxwell chuckled.
"Were you expecting a t.v. drama because my family is rich?" Andrew laughed.
"Would you be upset if I said yes?" Maxwell shook his head.
"No, because it was a snub that Mom brought us to the condo, no matter what she said." Maxwell muttered, and Andrew felt that was going to be a problem for a while. Andrew smiled, before it dimmed.
"When we were talking earlier about the wedding, Ben said something about Amir’s family being strict about marriage?" Maxwell tensed, before he ran his hand over his face.
"If we go to the wedding, you should know, but don’t bring it up to Amir. He’s still...recovering." That did not sound good, and Andrew tensed, readying himself. "Amir’s family wanted an heir before they got married. Amir did fall pregnant, but..." It didn’t take a genius to read between the lines, and Andrew sighed.
"Oh how devastating to them." Andrew murmured, and Maxwell nodded, his expression sullen.
"Apparently Amir didn’t eat for a while. Ben had to get an I.V. to keep him alive. Ben then used that to get their marriage approved. Anyone who said that they weren’t trying for an heir had to shut their mouth. It was Amir’s grandfather who bullied and silenced the rest of his family. Amir was his favourite grandchild from my understanding." Andrew nodded, trying to understand the family dynamics. It had been just his Mom and him, but he was sympathetic to big families.
"Well then, I hope the rest of the family keeps their mouths shut about it at the wedding then. If they don’t, I’m sure your parents, or even Ben might kill them." Andrew offered, and Maxwell laughed.
"You know my family so well already." Maxwell teased, and Andrew smiled, before he grew nervous again.
"Uh, Maxwell, what does your Father do? I know Ben is inheriting the company, but I don’t know what it is." Maxwell’s gaze became shifty, and that only worried Andrew.
"Can I tell you later? You know that Will and I run businesses that work closely together. Will is in charge of the few hospitals we run, and I am in charge of the pharmaceutical side of things." Andrew nodded.
"But I’m getting the sense that isn’t what the main company is about." Andrew said, and Maxwell laughed.
"Don’t worry that pretty little head of yours for now, alright? Please?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew felt himself melt. He pressed a kiss against his forehead.
"Alright. I’ll drop it for now, but I will ask again, and I will expect an answer, alright?" Maxwell nodded at Andrew’s firm, but warm tone.
"I understand, Dr. Knox." He responded, teasing, and Andrew narrowed his eyes. This beautiful man.
