Chapter 60: Caught kissing without any mistletoe

Andrew was worried that they would have left the dining room in the time that the two of them had been chatting, but that wasn’t the case. The six remaining members of the family sat at a mostly cleared table, waiting for the two of them to return.

Andrew hesitated slightly, until Ben wrapped his arm around Andrew’s shoulder, tugging him into the room.

"We’ve talked out our differences, and everyone will be happy to know that Dr. Knox will consider Father’s help." Andrew tossed a confused, almost betrayed look in Ben’s direction, but the other man was grinning. Maxwell’s Father’s expression softened.

"Well thank goodness. I would have been quite upset if he kept rejecting it." Andrew blinked. They were behaving as if he had already accepted it!

Snorting, Andrew burst into laughter before wrapping his arm around Ben’s shoulder with a grin of his own.

"You are one conniving bastard. I’m sure he’s proud you are taking over for him, Mr. Shrewd Businessman." It was the best praise Andrew could give him, and he was glad to see that Maxwell’s brother understood that.

"Why thank you Dr. Knox."

"Hey, hands off." Maxwell’s tart voice was the warning Andrew got before his hands wrapped around Andrew’s arm and he was yanked away from Maxwell’s brother. Andrew fell into the smaller man, who was glaring at his older brother. Andrew was shocked.

"Maxwell, did you think your brother would seduce me?" He was shocked, and Maxwell continued to glare at his older sibling.

"Not in that way, but you are mine, body and soul. Even business-wise, you are mine. Back off, Ben. You aren’t getting him." Maxwell hissed, and Ben laughed.

"Ah, my brother is so stingy. You can share him, can’t you?" Maxwell’s glare clearly didn’t scare him, and Andrew stared in surprise at his behaviour. Ben clearly liked getting a rise out of his little brother from the way the corners of his mouth twisted up slightly.

"He’s mine. Back off." Maxwell was basically marking his territory, and Andrew couldn’t help it when his shoulders shook. He pressed a kiss against Maxwell’s cheek. "Why are you laughing, Andrew? This is a serious matter." Maxwell was full on fluffed up and angry, and Andrew couldn’t but laugh.

"What am I supposed to do in this situation? The Beckett family heirs are fighting over me. I cannot help but laugh." Andrew said, grinning at Maxwell, who stared up at the man, his glare fading as Andrew continued to laugh. "You are so sweet." Andrew told him, meaning it, and Maxwell swallowed.

"See? He’s not going to you." Maxwell bragged, turning to his older brother with a smug grin.

"Well, given that he plans to change careers, wouldn’t it make more sense if he went to me?" Maxwell’s other brother spoke up, and everyone turned to look at him. Maxwell’s expression hardened.

"You don’t even like him." Maxwell protested, and Will shrugged.

"I never said that. I said that the rumours about him weren’t great." Andrew cleared his throat.

"If I may, it did feel like you really didn’t like me, and I would hate for others to think I got my job because of favouritism." Maxwell snorted.

"Andrew, you’re speaking to three nepotism babies. It’s okay if there is some favouritism. Sometimes it’s well earned." Andrew wanted to protest, but Maxwell’s Mother cleared her throat.

"If everyone is done with dinner, we can move to the living room." She declared, pushing back her chair loudly, and Andrew winced. She must have not liked the topic of their conversation.

Maxwell grabbed Andrew’s hand in his own, and Andrew watched as the two brothers helped their partners up and escorted them to the living room. Andrew and Maxwell hung back again, and Maxwell’s Father came and patted Andrew on the shoulder.

"Don’t feel pressured. I just want to make sure that you are taken care of properly. After all, I made that fake id for this very reason. And don’t worry about your former company or dealing with them. Maxwell and I already have a plan." He gave Andrew a proud, pleased smile. "Maxwell is quite the little schemer." Maxwell’s ears turned pink again, and he wouldn’t meet Andrew’s gaze. Andrew’s expression was soft and warm as he stared down at his boyfriend.

"Oh? Is he really? How am I not surprised? My boyfriend likes to scheme as I’ve noticed." Andrew teased, not upset about the schemes he’d pulled. None of them had hurt him, and were in fact put into place to protect him.

"I-I’m not apologisng." Maxwell muttered, and Andrew’s eyes widened.

"Why would I ask you to? You haven’t done anything to harm me, have you?" Andrew asked, confused, and Maxwell glanced up at Andrew, before relaxing his shoulders and really meeting his gaze.

"Well, people don’t normally like schemers, Andrew." Maxwell stated, clearly a little nervous about it. Andrew glanced at Maxwell’s Father, who was a schemer, his Mother, who was also a schemer, and his eldest brother who had just left the room.

He snorted, covering his mouth with his hand as he looked down at the man who he loved.

"Max, honey, sweetheart, there is no way I would care about anything you schemed as long as you didn’t mean to harm me. I like it when you do what you love. If that’s espionage, who am I to stop you? So far, everything you’ve done has been to punish the people who hurt me, right?" Maxwell’s ears turned pink, and the flush crossed to his cheeks. He was so freaking cute.

"...Currently, yes." Andrew laughed, tossing his head back before smiling down at the man who held his hand. Andrew bent down, aware that Maxwell’s Father was leaving with a smile on his face, shaking his head.

"Then currently, I don’t give a fuck." Andrew told him, grinning, and Maxwell frowned.

"You should. I really worry you trust people too easily, Andrew. I mean, you followed me as soon as I said I was having problems with an alpha."

"But were you lying?" Andrew asked, smiling, and Maxwell narrowed his eyes.

"I feel like your Mom had to worry you’d go with a stranger if they offered you candy." Andrew couldn’t deny that. It was something his Mom had warned him about constantly.

"My Mom was a worrywart." Andrew offered instead, and Maxwell shook his head, laughing lightly.

"I think you made her one. I worry about you constantly." Andrew’s heart melted hearing his words.

"You do?" Andrew asked, and Maxwell narrowed his eyes at the taller man.

"Don’t make me say it twice." He warned, and Andrew yanked Maxwell closer, grinning as he saw Maxwell’s eyes widen before stealing another kiss, much to Maxwell’s protest. Maxwell pressed against his chest weakly, his eyes glancing around the room wildly. Andrew chuckled.

"We’re alone. Your Father left us a few minutes ago." Andrew muttered against Maxwell’s lips. "Now let me reward you, please? You get so angry for my sake. How could I not want to give you kisses?" Andrew asked against Maxwell’s lips. Maxwell groaned, before kissing Andrew back, his arms wrapping around Andrew’s neck and he stood on his tiptoes to kiss him.

Andrew relished the feeling of Maxwell against him, his tongue in his mouth, and their breaths in sync. He wouldn’t trade these moments for anything else, and when Maxwell pulled away, his eyes full of desire and his cheeks flushed, Andrew’s heart swelled.

"You are the sweetest, cutest man I know." Andrew whispered, his whole heart in his words. He watched as Maxwell’s eyes went wide, before a slow, warm smile crossed his face.

"We’re going to have to disagree, since you are the cutest man I know." Maxwell’s warm tone soothed something inside of Andrew, and Andrew buried his face into Maxwell’s neck, inhaling his scent. It was comforting, and Maxwell’s chuckle made Andrew want to whisk this man away from his family, back to their home so that he could have his wicked way with him.

Someone cleared their throat, and Andrew froze.

Glancing up, he found Maxwell’s Mother staring at him with her arms crossed. At first, he was worried that she was going to tear into him, but the longer he stayed with Maxwell in his arms, the more he watched her lips twitch. Finally, a smile broke out across her face, and she laughed.

"If you two are done, uh, acquainting each other with your scent, we require your presence in the living room. My husband and my eldest son would like to share a glass of scotch with you, Dr. Knox." Andrew’s cheeks flushed, and Maxwell’s whole frame shook.

"I don’t think you’re one to talk, Mom." He teased, and she chuckled.

"No, which is why I am not mad. Dr. Knox, dear, next time, sweep him into a bathroom. They have locks." Andrew’s mouth opened, before he closed it and looked down, embarrassed.

"I wasn’t planning to do anything...risqué." Andrew muttered, having never been caught like this, and so he wasn’t sure how to respond. Maxwell laughed.

"You might not have, but remember the books you’ve been reading? Do you remember what they said about pheromones? And necks?" Maxwell prompted, and Andrew stared down at him, confused.

"No, I don’t. I might not have read that book yet." Andrew said, and Maxwell sighed, glancing at his Mother as Andrew stepped back, embarrassed.

"It’s a thing only done between lovers, because that’s where you bite to mark as mates." Maxwell whispered, trying to sound scandalised. Andrew’s eyes went wide, and he turned to look at Maxwell’s Mom, who burst into laughter at his panicked expression.

"From your eyes alone, Dr. Knox, I understand why you are so worried. Rest assured, I believe I have a good enough understanding of your personality to believe you wouldn’t do that without my son’s full permission." Her eyes twinkled as she looked Andrew over. "Now, get over here you two." Andrew, who had feared for the worst when he’d originally stepped into the condo felt his shoulders relax at the open, soft expression on her face.

He had passed. They weren’t going to protest his relationship with Maxwell.

He let out a deep sigh, half of his worries gone. He knew that he’d have to bring Maxwell to meet his Mom, but he knew how that would go. His Mom would have loved Maxwell for how defensive he was of Andrew alone.

They had the approval of both sets of parents.
