Chapter 55: Rumours do not make the man

"Everyone, please meet Max’s partner, Dr. Andrew Knox." Maxwell’s Mother introduced him, and Andrew detected a slight warmth to her tone. He hoped he wasn’t being delusional. Andrew gave a small bow.

"I hope you will go easy on me. I’ve only recently manifested, so I’m still new to everything." Andrew gave a lopsided grin, while the two brother’s furrowed their brows.

"How is that possible? He looks like an alpha." Andrew laughed awkwardly at one of Maxwell’s brother’s words.

"Ah, I’ve always been this tall. I look quite a bit like my Father, as my Mother used to say.’ Andrew joked, and Maxwell’s hand tightened around his. Andrew was used to this, it didn’t hurt him to say it. Maxwell was being silly for being worried about it. After all, Maxwell had said the same thing the first time they’d met.

"It’s only been about three weeks since his...manifestation, so forgive him if he does something rude. Andrew has been working with Dr. Smith to manage his sudden change, and has taken some medication to help him get through tonight." That seemed to spark some interest in Maxwell’s Father.

"Oh? What did Dr. Smith suggest?" He asked, and Maxwell squeezed Andrew’s hand again.

"A scent blocker. We haven’t tested it on true alphas yet, so we considered this a good-"

"Hold the phone, that man is a true alpha?" The ruder of the two brother’s practically yelled, and the smaller omega flinched at the sound so close to his ears.

"Will, be quiet." Maxwell’s Mother hissed, and Will glared at her.

"What? Isn’t that as shocking as it is to me as it is to you? How in the world does this feel organic? Maxwell must have brought someone to shake you off of his tail." Andrew could tell Maxwell was getting angry, and Andrew gave his hand a squeeze. Andrew smiled warmly at Will.

"That may have been the case when I was a beta, and I was more of a guard than a boyfriend at the time, especially since I was dating someone at the time, but things have changed now. I didn’t know my father was a true alpha, but here we are." Andrew shrugged, while Will laughed, a cruel twist to his lips.

"What? You didn’t want to cheat on your partner?" He sneered, and the other omega gasped, while the one in his arms pushed his hand off of him. Maxwell was ready to attack, but Andrew laughed.

"Well, no. Our relationship ended when she accused me of insider trading because I was tall. Even though my company did yearly tests to make sure everyone was who they said they were. And my company believed her because she was crying, and they apparently wanted to fire me unjustly." Andrew said, and the wind was knocked out of Will’s sails. Maxwell released Andrew’s hand to stomp over to his older brother, gripping him by the collar.

"That is what happens when you open your mouth without thinking, William. Now, apologise to Andrew for your rude comments. You have no idea what Andrew had to go through because of her." Maxwell hissed, and when Will looked around the room, he found that even his Father’s gaze was cold. Andrew was indifferent, if not a little bit moved at Maxwell’s display of affection for him.

"Maxwell, I don’t need an apology. It was a fair question to ask, especially as I’ve been learning about true alphas. They are, from my new knowledge, quite loose, as some would say." Maxwell nearly choked, before spinning to stare at the still smiling Andrew. Maxwell’s anger faded immediately. Maxwell rushed to Andrew’s side, his eyes scanning Andrew’s face worriedly.

"You are not like him." He whispered quietly, but fiercely, and Andrew nodded.

"Will, you owe Dr. Knox an apology." Maxwell’s Father spoke up, and both Andrew and Maxwell turned to stare at him. The man had a hardness to his jaw that bellied the anger that he felt. Andrew swallowed. Well, he did know what had actually happened to Andrew, and this proved that his sons, and even his wife didn’t know.

Will was being stubborn about it, and huffed angrily, crossing his arms.

"Why? He said it was fine." Will gestured vaguely in Andrew’s direction, and Andrew watched as Maxwell and his Father bristled.

"He said it was fine to Maxwell, not to you, and I am not fine with your behaviour. As your Father, I am greatly disappointed. I did not raise you in a barn." Will pouted, and honestly, Andrew was having a hard time.

He knew this was a serious situation, but it was amusing to see a side of Maxwell in this older brother of his that Andrew didn’t get to see often. The pouting, angry, unpleasable side that Andrew found endearing. He knew it wasn’t normal to have these thoughts while the family was trying to tear itself apart for his sake, but he couldn’t help it.

"Mr. Beckett, I swear I’m fine. I’ve been called an alpha all the time when I was a beta, it’ll just be a new adjustment for me to be called a true alpha now. I took no offense to his words before, and I mean that. Who would want to think that their brother was the other person, or helping someone to cheat?" Andrew asked, before smiling warmly at William. What Andrew wasn’t aware of was the way his normally brown eyes glinted amber before returning back to their normal shade.

Will shivered.

"Ah, no, I think I should apologise. It was rude of me to say that to you, and it was out of line. This is supposed to be our first meeting, but I let the rumours I’ve heard of you colour my impression of you." Andrew blinked, shocked, and Will huffed. "We went to Harvard together." It took Andrew a moment, before he gasped, and snapped his fingers.

"Oh! We did! I completely forgot about that." Andrew laughed. "Wait, there were rumours about me?" Andrew asked, curious, and watched as Will’s cheeks turned pink.

"Ah, they weren’t good rumours, and let’s leave it at that." Andrew’s curiousity was still spiked, but a woman in a formal black dress entered the room, and glanced around at everyone.

"Dinner is served, if everyone is willing to follow me to the dining room." Maxwell glanced back at Andrew, and held him back when Andrew went to leave right away. Maxwell’s Father came to join them as the two brothers went to their partners and led them to the dining room first.

"Please forgive William, Dr. Knox. The boy...means well, he just never thinks when he opens his mouth." Andrew felt a swell of pity for the man. Now that he was closer to him, he could tell he was exhausted.

"Are you alright Mr. Beckett? Are you sure you shouldn’t be getting some rest?" Andrew asked, concerned, and Mr. Beckett’s eyes widened, before he chuckled. With a slight hesitation, Mr. Beckett raised his hand and placed it on Andrew’s shoulder, giving it a pat.

"No no, I’ll be alright. Thank you for your concern." Andrew was surprised by Mr. Beckett’s warm tone. He wasn’t expecting it. Even though Mr. Beckett had gifted Andrew the suit he was currently wearing, it wasn’t as if he forgot how Mr. Beckett had behaved the first time they had met.

"Honey, bring the boys. We don’t want to be late to our own dinner." Maxwell’s Mother called, and Mr. Beckett gave Andrew’s shoulder a squeeze before releasing it.

"Don’t be too tense. I promise it won’t be awful. She just really wanted to meet the man who was living with Maxwell. I also didn’t disclose what happened, and Maxwell, be kind to your brothers. They are only worried about you." Maxwell made a face at his Father’s words, who sighed tiredly. "Come on boys. Andrew, do you have any allergies?" He asked as the three of them headed for the dining room.

"No Sir. I’ve never been a picky eater either." Andrew told him, and felt his feet stutter as he got to the dining room. He knew that he should have expected the long table out of a tv show, but it still took him by surprise. Unlike the living room, which was done in a grayscale style, the dining room was opulent, and obviously used for entertaining guests. Andrew guessed that the fact he was taken to the living room was a sign of some acceptance.

He hoped.

Thankfully, Andrew was seated next to Maxwell on one side, and next to the brother who hadn’t berated him on his other. Maxwell seemed uncomfortable with that choice, but Andrew took everything in stride.

Andrew knew that Maxwell was just uncomfortable around his family. It was cute, but since Maxwell had explained why, he knew that it wasn’t something Andrew could influence either. He couldn’t force Maxwell to see that his family had pushed him to get married out of a concern for him. It was the same way he couldn’t force Maxwell’s family to trust that Maxwell could take care of himself.

So, Andrew sat prettily at the table, a smile on his face even as the tense atmosphere tried to swallow him up. A few scents trickled his way, mostly from the unmated couple across the table. The couple next to him didn’t release any scent, which told Andrew that they were mated, or very good at controlling their scent. Maxwell’s Father hadn’t given off a scent since Andrew had met him, and given Maxwell’s brief story he’d told, he understood why.

Clearing his throat, Mr. Beckett looked around the table with a serious gaze before he smiled.

"Let dinner begin."
