Chapter 53: An honest and pure love
Andrew shifted nervously as Maxwell adjusted his tie for the 14th time.
"Maxwell, Angel, I’m fine. It’s fine." Maxwell was pouting, and Andrew was trying his best not to smile. It would only upset him more.
Like Andrew had hoped, Michael had been game to help Andrew out. In fact, the company that Maxwell ran, and that he wanted Andrew to move into to work in, had several varieties of scent blockers on the market. They hadn’t been tested on true alphas, so this was the perfect time to test. Especially since Andrew was so new, and therefore hadn’t built up a resistance to anything yet.
Maxwell had insisted on coming with them to the flower shop, but Andrew drew the line of him actually coming into the store. Maxwell had pouted, and tried to throw a fit, but after a few whispered promises on Andrew’s part, and several men not paying attention to the couple, Maxwell relented. It was just Michael and Andrew who went into the flower shop.
At first, Andrew was overwhelmed, and when someone came over to ask if they needed any help, Andrew froze up. Michael was the one who smiled and waved them away, telling them that Andrew was just nervous. It worked, and it also gave time for Andrew to process all the smells he was encountering.
The flowers alone were overwhelming, like Maxwell had suggested, but at the same time, they were scents that he was vaguely used to. It was...familiar. What threw him for a loop was the scents that were coming from the people around him. It wasn’t like he hadn’t smelled scents from people before. Body odor, or people using perfumes and the like were common, but with his new senses, he was able to pick up the essence of people now.
He found it a little humourous that most of the people who worked in the flower shop had flower based scents. The lady who helped them the most smelled of lavender and honey. It was a pleasant scent, but not one that interested him. Maxwell’s alluring, unable to be placed scent filled his mind as he smelt other’s scent, and helped soothe him.
Andrew eventually made a decision on the flowers he wanted, and asked for a bouquet to be made instead of ordering one of the premade ones. The shop workers were surprised at first, until Andrew admitted it was for his partner’s Mom and he wanted to make a good first impression.
They had all softened, and grew even softer when Andrew insisted that he wanted the pink hydrangeas specifically as the feature flower in it. The more romantic of them told him what the flower meant, and Andrew had the distinct embarrassing moment to reveal that he already knew what the flower meant, and his face was bright red. Michael, who had no idea when Andrew was picking them out, grinned widely and smacked Andrew on the shoulder.
If Maxwell’s Mom knew the language of flowers, she would find out that her son’s suitor was quite sincere about her son. But that was a big if.
Things took a turn at around the 15 minute mark, and since he had already paid and was just waiting for the flowers, Michael shoed Andrew outside and back to the car.
Andrew was shaky on his feet as he left the flower shop, the bell ringing as he left the store. Maxwell pushed open the door to the car, his expression worried as he saw Andrew flushed, gasping for air as he left the store. Maxwell was about to get out of the car when he met Andrew’s gaze and he shook his head.
Biting his lip, Maxwell waited in the car as he watched Andrew stumble towards him, before collapsing into the car, right on top of him. Andrew wrapped his arms around Maxwell, burying his nose into his neck and inhaling his scent over and over until his body stopped shaking. Maxwell ran his fingers through his hair, holding his head in his arms as he watched on, worried.
When Andrew turned his gaze up to look at Maxwell, his brown eyes were sparkling.
"I made it quite far." He told Maxwell proudly, and there was no way Maxwell was going to be mad at him in the face of such pure pride in himself. Maxwell sighed, pressing a kiss against his forehead.
"You did a good job, Andrew." Maxwell told him, and Andrew tightened his grip on him before burying his head into his neck again, and relaxing against Maxwell. Andrew knew he was pressing the other man into an awkward position into the car, but Maxwell didn’t complain.
Instead, he ran his fingers through his hair, and Andrew sighed, happy, content.
In Andrew’s mind, this experiment had been a success, and when Michael had joined them in the car, holding onto the flowers, he mirrored Andrew’s happiness. Michael’s eyes were sparkling, glee in their depths.
"He did exceptionally well in such a potent shop. And everyone only thought he was nervous. He’ll be fine if he takes another pill before you two depart for tonight." Michael assured Maxwell as the trio headed back to Maxwell’s home.
Once there, and Andrew had calmed down significantly, Andrew took the flowers from Michael with a soft smile, staring down at the arrangement that the shop had put together. In his mind, they had done a spectacular job, especially on the fly.
The pink hydrangeas were on full display, with several paler pink roses, baby’s breath, and some foliage for accents. A few sprigs of eucalyptus, some delicate ferns, and a beautiful wrap job done in a dusty pink tone with a muted green ribbon brought the bouquet together. Andrew really hoped that Maxwell’s Mom liked it. Andrew was partial to it, since one of his own Mother’s favourite flowers were hydrangeas, which was why Andrew knew the meaning behind them.
All meanings.
Unfortunately, Andrew’s father liked to gift blue hydrangeas to Andrew’s Mom.
Andrew would make sure that would never happen to Maxwell. Ever.
After Andrew had made sure that the flowers were somewhere cool and safe, he headed for the shower to freshen up, while Michael brushed off their session today in favour of Andrew getting ready to meet Maxwell’s family. One stressor was enough for the fresh-faced true alpha, so he waved after briefing Maxwell on things to pay attention to throughout the night, and headed on his way.
Which led to the current situation. Andrew, fully dressed in the new suit that Maxwell’s Father had gifted him, Maxwell dressed up slightly, wearing not a true black suit, but one that was slightly velvet in texture, revealing swirling patterns every time he shifted, a light, blush pink dress shirt underneath with the collar open. He wasn’t wearing a tie like Andrew was, and Andrew found that little bit of skin he revealed at his neck to be intoxicating.
"Maxy, are you sure we don’t have a second-"
"Keep your hands to yourself, Dr. Knox, or so help me, I won’t forgive you. You’re the one who was excited to go to this dinner, and I’m the one being blackmailed into going." Maxwell’s tone was tight, and it was clear he was stressed. Andrew just wanted to calm him down, but Maxwell wasn’t having any of it. Andrew sighed, letting Maxwell fuss over him as he stared down at the beauty before him.
Maxwell had gelled his hair back slightly, a few strands intentionally falling into his eyes. Maxwell had tried to do the same to Andrew, but his hair hadn’t cooperated, and Andrew had to wash it again.
Andrew didn’t mind. He got to listen to Maxwell mutter about how he was going to have to get new hair products for Andrew. It was nice to think about how Maxwell was changing his life to fit Andrew into it. Andrew just hoped he was also doing the same.
A knock sounded at the front door, and Maxwell froze.
"That must be the driver. Take your pills with you, but don’t forget to take one right before we leave." Maxwell warned, and Andrew nodded, listening raptly to his little fairy. Maxwell finished playing with his lapels, and rushed around the house to grab his shoes. Andrew followed behind him, swiping the pills before popping one into his mouth and swallowing, shoving the rest into his suit pocket. It was a perfect fit, and you couldn’t see the packet outline when you looked at his suit.
It was really a well designed suit, once he was in it. Andrew still felt a little weird being in something so showy, but given that Maxwell was wearing a suit that was also that, he felt a little bit better. He also had a feeling Maxwell had done it on purpose, but he’d leave that for a different time. Preferably in a bath or shower with Maxwell after this dinner was over.
Moving to pull on his black shoes, he nearly jumped out of his skin when Maxwell slammed a pair of cream oxford style shoes down in front of him instead.
"You weren’t planning to wear black shoes with your suit, were you?" Maxwell’s tone was harsh, and his eyes were sharp. Andrew had to bite his lip to hide his smile.
"I’m so sorry, Sir. I won’t do it again, Sir." Maxwell narrowed his eyes, clearly about to go into a lecture about fashion to Andrew, when Andrew leaned forward and kissed his forehead, grinning. "Thank you for the gift. I don’t have any cream shoes. You’re quite thoughtful." Maxwell’s ears turned pink, and he turned his face away, covering the spot that Andrew had kissed.
"Of course I am." Maxwell muttered, and it was clear that Andrew had caught him off guard. It was cute to see him so embarrassed over a simple kiss around others when in private, he was aggressive and pushy.
Slipping into the shiny new shoes that matched his outfit perfectly, Andrew made sure that the flowers were the last thing he grabbed. Smelling them, he smiled before he joined Maxwell at the door. Maxwell swallowed thickly, before looking up at him.
"Are you ready?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew nodded, smiling.
