Chapter 42: What do you know about alphas?

After the two of them had finally calmed down, Andrew was the one who called Michael back into the living room. He knew that the other man had given them some privacy to soothe each other, but that didn’t mean that Michael was soothed.

Oh no.

The black man was still pissed at Andrew, and it was for a good reason. Andrew had fucked up. He’d let his own hang ups, and the trauma from his childhood take over his future. He’d hurt both of them, and he felt like shit. He wasn’t sure how he was going to be able to make it up to either of them.

Michael gestured to the couch, near where he’d laid everything out.

"Go, sit. Did anyone want anything while I’m up?" He asked, and both of the men shook their heads. Michael shrugged, before coming to join them on the couch. There was an awkward silence, before Michael sighed. "Did Mr. Beckett talk some sense into you?" Michael asked, and Andrew nodded, his cheeks a little pink.

"Yeah." Andrew said, and Michael sighed again.

"It’s awful that you are going through this, and as much as you are alone in this, you very much aren’t, Andy. Others manifest late as well, and to the public, that’s the story we’re planning to go with until we can bring them to justice. They have therapy sessions for people like you, who have hold ups about being a beta for so long, for having people say dumb shit, and how hard it is to accept yourself. You’ve gotten a taste today of what that can do to you. It can lead to death, Andrew, which is why I’m taking this so seriously. Now, since you aren’t reading your information on your own, I’m going to have to come in person to have lessons with you. I knew that this was the likely outcome, so I already set aside time to do so." Andrew went paled.

"What do you mean you knew this was going to happen?" Michael glanced at Maxwell, before shrugging and continued speaking, meeting Andrew’s gaze.

"It wasn’t exactly a secret in university that you hated your dad. Especially since you were coming in and out of the hospital and then suddenly dropped out for a family emergency. If anyone was paying attention, they could have connected the dots. And being a true alpha is hereditary. You had to have gotten that trait from someone." Andrew swallowed thickly at Michaels words, and when he would have overwhelmed everyone with his pheromones, Maxwell washed his pheromones over him. He slowly calmed down.

"I...I didn’t realise I was so transparent." Andrew muttered, and Michael smiled.

"Well, when a good guy like you who worked so hard didn’t have two loving parents, anyone would wonder. You were so dedicated to school too. Anyone could tell it was for a reason. I’m glad you stuck with the sciences, but I’m sad to see that you left becoming a doctor behind. Well, a medical doctor." His smile was a little wistful as he looked over the newly made alpha. Andrew stared at the papers on the coffee table, mulling over the words.

"It just didn’t...I think I was too angry at the time to continue it. It felt like they had failed my mom. Honestly, I wondered if my dad had played a role in it all. That’s why I left to England." Everyone seemed surprised to hear that.

"Wait, so you don’t know if your dad is old money, but you think so? But you also didn’t know who Mr. Beckett’s family was?" Andrew gave them a sheepish look.

"Honestly? I just didn’t want to look up families who had a lot of wealth and influence to find his name. It was a sore spot for a long time. Sorry Max." Maxwell shrugged, and it was clear he wasn’t upset in the slightest. But he did appear confused.

"So...you come from a seriously wealthy family? Like, if you were to guess....how wealthy?" Andrew laughed.

"I would like to think your family is more wealthy, but I didn’t pay attention. Mom and I never used any of the money he gave us. Put it in an account for a different bank so that if I ever saw him I could tell him to go shove his child support." Maxwell’s eyes widened, before he burst into laughter.

"Now I want to be there when you do it. That sounds like it would be hilarious. Especially if he was a lineage focused alpha like you suggested." Michael tsked.

"I’m not fancy enough to be there. And I’m not involved with anyone fancy." Maxwell stared at Michael, tilting his head to the side.

"Why would you not be there? We’d need someone in case something happened to Andrew surrounded by so many people. A doctor would be the perfect accompaniment to a party." Maxwell offered easily, and Michael’s eyes widened. "And you would have the chance to make those connections you bemoaned earlier. I will have no man under my service complaining about what I provided." Andrew nearly choked and Michael coughed.

"W-What was that, Max?" Andrew asked, and Maxwell, who was normally on top of comments like this, stared at his partner.

"Do you disagree? I do not agree with you, but you can present your argument." Andrew tensed.

"My argument is that you are including other men complaining about the ’service’ that you provided, Max." Maxwell’s eyes widened, before colour touched his ears.

"Oh. I didn’t, that didn’t even cross my mind. That wasn’t where I was going, Andrew. I was just trying to defend the people I hired." Andrew nodded, understanding where he was coming from. That didn’t mean that he was okay how he phrased it.

"I understand that. Just, when you talk about your employees, just call them that next time. Please." Andrew asked, and Maxwell nodded, a slight flush to his ears.

"Well, thank you for your offer, Mr. Beckett. You let me know when you plan to take Andrew out into the big wide world, and I’ll make sure he won’t have a breakdown like today." Maxwell nodded at Michael’s words, and Michael stared at Andrew. "Andrew, what do you know about alphas? I need to know where I’m starting from given your reaction." Andrew flinched at the sharp tone in Michael’s voice, but swallowed. This was a bed of his own making, and it was time to lie in it.

"Well, I think only basic information. I didn’t...I looked at the first page of one of the books you brought over and then didn’t touch them again. Uh, alphas have pheromones, like omegas. They are usually believed to be smarter and stronger then the other two, and usually are preferred compared to the other classifications. Everyone wants an alpha. Uh, they have sharper teeth, so that they can mark omegas. I dunno, most alphas I’ve met have had this...air about them that sometimes made me think they were very punchable." Michael snorted, and stared at Andrew.

"I’m an alpha. Do I appear very punchable?" Andrew didn’t answer, and Michael laughed. From Andrew’s look on his face, he’d had that feeling, but Michael had a feeling it was a recent development. "Fair enough. Well, half of that information is true. Alphas do have pheromones like omegas and they do have sharper teeth to be able to mark and mate an omega. Sometimes they are stronger than others, but that’s not an always thing. Sometimes they are weaker then what others think omegas are. It’s just a classification. Sure, alpha bodies are different from omega and beta bodies, but that doesn’t change who they are fundamentally. If someone is a bad person, it isn’t because of their secondary sex. It’s because they’re a bad fucking person." Michael snorted, shaking his head.

"All that stuff you have in your head about preferences and shit? Poison that’s been given to you over the years. That stuff doesn’t mean anything. No one should prefer a certain secondary sex over another. Does that mean it still happens? Yes. From my understanding, your father was one of them." Michael said. Andrew winced, but nodded. It felt...strange to be talking about him in this way. Since he was so used to not really addressing him in anything but the way his Mom had spoken of him. It felt...a little bit like a weight had been lifted off of his shoulders.

"So...alphas aren’t always stronger?" Michael made a face. Andrew grew confused.

"Well, regular alphas, yes. You remember your classification, right? Your new one?" Michael asked, and Andrew winced.

"Uh, a...big alpha?" Andrew offered, and Maxwell had to turn his head to the side to stifle his laughter.

"You are definitely big, Andrew." Maxwell said quietly, and Andrew blushed. "But that’s not what it is. You are a true alpha. Remember that, since I don’t think other alphas would like to be referred to as big by you." Andrew nodded, his cheeks pink. Michael smiled at him.

"Yes, you are a true alpha. Those guys...they are hereditary, and a little bit special compared to others." Maxwell nodded.

"It would make sense why your father was so obsessed with lineage especially if he was also a true alpha. He probably got the pressure from his father, and then his father’s father, etc. the families that have trus alphas really pride themselves on that." Maxwell said, and Andrew stared at the coffee table.

"It...makes some of his behaviours make sense." Andrew muttered and Maxwell patted his hand.

"It can make them make sense, but it doesn’t excuse them." Maxwell said firmly, and Andrew nodded. Michael agreed with Maxwell.

"Agreed. That asshole is just an asshole, who is using the secondary sex of his children as an excuse."
