Chapter 37: When everything is going right

Chapter 37: When everything is going right

The next week was all about adjustments. Andrew had to adjust to the fact that Maxwell really didn’t want him leaving the house, and to what his new life meant.

Maxwell wouldn’t let him even consider going out to work, even if it was just in a grocery store or something, and Andrew had no idea why. He felt fine, he felt normal. If anything, he was thriving.

Maxwell’s kitchen had looked unused before Andrew had moved in. All new appliances, all new tools. There were things here that Andrew had no idea what they were, but he’d spent the week getting to know everything.

It was clear that Maxwell hadn’t stocked the kitchen, and the person who had also had no idea what went in a kitchen. They had just pressed order all and everything had arrived and was put away. It gave Andrew something to do in the week that Maxwell had basically secluded him.

He also located where the washer and dryer were in the house, and had set about washing everything he could. He found out that Maxwell usually had a maid service come and clean the house since he couldn’t be bothered, but Andrew insisted that if he wasn’t working, he could do that at least.

So, Andrew turned himself into a house husband. Maxwell would work away in his home office, and Mr. Newman would come in and out of the house at Maxwell’s order, and Andrew would put on some music and clean and cook and made sure both he and Maxwell were well fed.

Andrew was sure the house had never sparkled so much, nor smelt as good before he moved in. The smell of fresh baked bread permeated the house, and Andrew even looked up videos and started a sourdough starter. He was settling into the role quite well, and enjoyed every moment of it. Even if there was a slight twinge about how he missed his old job every now and then, he felt that most housewives felt this way in the beginning. And it’d only been a week. He’d get better over time.

Without a laptop, it was hard to do much of anything. He’d downloaded a reading app for when he was bored, and found that he quite enjoyed reading. It was a hobby he’d put down after his Mother had passed, but it was something that they had shared together in the past. He’d even picked up a few of her favourites and in his down time had begun to read them.

So, even though he wasn’t working, and it kinda felt like he was stuck inside, things were actually looking up. Especially his relationship with Maxwell. That was what was really making his day.

Maxwell was a very serious man. Andrew knew this, and had seen him when he was working before. He had just never seen him behind a desk before. Or taking charge of others. Listening to him talk to others over the phone? It was incredibly attractive. He was hot, in a suit even at home, and in charge. Watching him while he worked in his office was a new favourite pastime of Andrew’s. He knew that Maxwell knew he was there, but he never said anything. The only true sign that he knew Maxwell was aware of him was his pink, slightly flushed face. The colour his ears would turn and the way he would avoid looking at the door. It was very cute of him, and Andrew enjoyed it immensely.

The other thing he was enjoying was the fact that he ate breakfast, lunch and dinner with Maxwell. It had been years since he’d had someone to cook for, and also eat with. Tracey had never been to his house before, and it had been years since his Mother had passed. He hadn’t dated anyone for years prior to Tracey, so he had been by himself until now.

Having Maxwell around, who was so excited and honestly, thankful that Andrew was cooking for him, warmed his heart. It filled a void that he hadn’t been aware of. Sitting down at the dining room table, setting the table, and actually talking to each other as they ate? It was something that Andrew missed, but he didn’t want to tell Maxwell about it. Not for any bad reason, but because he wanted to keep this moment to himself for a little bit longer. Once he had his time with it, then he wanted to share it with him.

Andrew was just glad to spend this time with Maxwell and grow into their relationship. He was learning that he had a lot of differences from Maxwell. Maxwell was an early riser, and a good one. He didn’t drink caffeine and ate very lightly in the morning. He would do light stretches before he began the day.

Andrew did not wake up well. He had several alarms he would have to set just to get up around 7 am. If he had the chance, he would sleep in until 10 am since that was what his body wanted. He drank at least two cups of coffee in the morning. So sweet it would turn a coffee purist’s nose away. He liked to go to the gym in the morning, but given the last week, that wasn’t happening, and he usually ate a rather large breakfast after that. Andrew would also stay in his pajamas as long as he could, while Maxwell would wake up and change into a different set of clothing.

In fact, Maxwell changed clothes a lot.

During the day Maxwell would change about 3 or 4 times. If he even thought something was dirty, or had a stain, he would change. It really made Andrew wonder how much laundry he had before, and where he got it done. Probably at a dry cleaners, now that he thought more about it, but that seemed ridiculous. Poor Mr. Newman had to be put to work by Maxwell, and Maxwell didn’t even call him by his name!

That was another thing he noticed. With Mr. Newman coming in and out of the house regularly since he was needed to help Maxwell, Maxwell never called him by his name. First or last. He was always referred to as ’you’, ’come here’ and ’did you get that?’. Andrew hadn’t taken the time to ask Mr. Newman if it bothered him yet, at least not with words.

He slipped him cookies, and sliced loaves of bread. He’d even make him sandwiches and the like. He definitely noticed that Mr. Newman was slowly warming up to him as time went on, and Andrew bribed him. Soon, he’d be able to ask him why Maxwell treated him in such a way without it feeling awkward. It was nice, since he knew that he made the other man uncomfortable. It was clear he shared something in common with Maxwell.

He didn’t trust other people easily.

Andrew had no idea why, but he didn’t really need a reason. Omegas had a very different life then the regular population. Some were viewed as less than, and often bullied for being smaller and rounded. It was for bogus reasons, based simply on society looking for someone to make fun of, and hurt. Andrew hated that, since he’d met many omegas who despite their small stature were larger than life.

Obviously he was biased, since he did include his Mother in that list, but there were many other omegas as well. Maxwell, obviously, and one could also argue Tracey. There were several of his friends from high school and college, and his professors and coworkers as well. Some of the smartest people he knew were omegas. Even if they weren’t often the physically strongest person in the room, that was no reason to sell them short just because they had the ability to give birth. It was ridiculous.

So, Mr. Newman was someone he was determined to get close to. Especially since he was someone who was so important to Maxwell, whether the man called him by his name or not. He was certain that if Mr. Newman took a day off, Maxwell wouldn’t be able to do anything. Andrew knew that he was going to have to make sure that Maxwell had given the man a raise, or the chance to train someone to take over for him in case he got sick. Or went into heat.

He hadn’t heard anything from Michael in the last week, and Andrew took that as a good thing. No word from your Doctor was a good sign, and Andrew was healing. Most of his bruises were gone, and the really bad ones were slowly healing. They looked awful, but he was getting better. He also felt stronger and was doing well. He was glad that Maxwell had forced him to take this time off. He hadn’t taken time for himself like this since before his Mom got sick. He was grateful for this slow, calm time.
