Chapter 23: It’s only orange juice
Chapter 23: It’s only orange juice
Michael watched as Andrew’s expression hardened, and all he could feel was sympathy for him. None of this could be easy, and he was thankful that Mr. Beckett came back with a large glass of orange juice, and Mr. Newman was close behind him with a steaming tray of what appeared to be a warmed up meal.
"Andrew, come." Maxwell ordered, and Andrew slowly moved his feet off of the table, but Michael stopped him.
"Uh, Mr. Beckett, Andrew’s feet have just been patched up. He needs to rest them before he should put any weight on them. Is it alright if he eats on the couch?" Maxwell didn’t seem angry to the others, but Andrew could tell that he wasn’t pleased that the new Doctor had spoken back to him. Andrew waited, held in stasis as he waited for Maxwell’s verdict.
"Stay seated, Andrew. I’ll bring it over." Andrew nodded, relaxing back into the couch. Michael also relaxed.
"I’m sorry Mr. Beckett. I just want to make sure that Andrew heals completely, without any side effects." Maxwell nodded at his apology, keeping his attention on Andrew. He passed Andrew the glass of orange juice with both hands, making Andrew smile. He didn’t think his hands were that small, after all, he’d had no problem-
Andrew nearly spewed the first sip he’d taken all over the man. Maxwell immediately grew concerned.
"Is everything alright? Does it taste bad?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew shook his head, his face heating in embarrassment and shame. What the hell was he thinking about? Maxwell was busy taking care of him! He was being considerate! How dare you think about him that way?
"N-No, just went down the wrong pipe." Andrew joked, his face still pink. Maxwell frowned, pressing the back of his hand against Andrew’s forehead as he took another sip of the orange juice. He tried to focus on the flavour of the juice, and how good it was, instead of on the feeling of Maxwell’s skin against his own.
Maxwell’s expression didn’t change much, but Andrew knew he was worried about him. Hell, this whole situation stemmed from the fact that Maxwell was worried about him.
Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck.
What were he and Maxwell to each other now? It was clear that they were more than neighbours now, but...were they something more? They hadn’t had a chance to talk about it since Michael and Mr. Newman had arrived. Were they just...friends? Friends that helped each other out during a rut? Or were they more? When was a good time to ask Maxwell? Was there a good time to ask?
As much as Andrew had bragged about sleeping with other people, that was during a time when he was on a self sabotage after his mother had passed. He didn’t really date anyone. Tracey had been his first partner in a while, since he’d taken a break to get happy with himself again.
Andrew didn’t need that time again, since for some reason, all of the shit that Tracey had put him through had cured any issues he was going to have with her. He was ready to jump into a relationship right away, with both feet, if Maxwell was. But then again, Maxwell had been using him to chase away the other alphas. What if...
What if Maxwell didn’t like alphas?
A cold shiver went down Andrew’s spine.
He finished the juice, Maxwell taking the glass from his hands before taking the tray from Mr. Newman and placing it on his lap. Maxwell fussed over him, in a way that Mr. Newman had never seen, until Andrew was cozy with the steaming food in front of him. Andrew didn’t want to tell any of the people watching him intently that the smell was making his stomach roll.
"T-Thank you Maxwell." A nerve twitched in Maxwell’s temple, but he didn’t say anything.
"Something isn’t right. What’s wrong?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew clenched his hand before picking up the fork presented to him.
"N-No. Nothing’s wrong." Andrew replied, smiling, but Maxwell didn’t buy it. He yanked the tray out from his lap before he could say another word, shoving the tray back towards Mr. Newman. Maxwell shifted, reaching out and wrapping his hand around the back of Andrew’s neck, before yanking him forward to bury his head in his throat.
"Inhale. You’ll be fine." Maxwell murmured. Andrew fought against the movement for only a few seconds, before he did inhale, and the nauseous feeling left his stomach, along with the worries that had filled his head. "Sh. You’re doing great." Maxwell’s soft, gentle murmur had the two men behind him sharing looks. Neither had seen Maxwell Beckett behave this way before, and both knew that they would have to take what they saw today to their graves.
Andrew shivered, and then the shiver turned into a tremble, and Maxwell climbed into the big man’s lap, holding him as tears fell from the large man’s eyes. He buried his face into the small man’s neck, inhaling the comforting, intoxicating scent he found there. Andrew found himself wrapping his arms around Maxwell’s back, holding him against him tightly, before he winced and weakened his hold.
"You aren’t hurting me." Maxwell told him, comforting him, unembarrassed that others were witnessing him. One was Andrew’s friend from university, and the other was an employee that swore loyalty to him as long as he kept him out of his family’s clutches. Either way, he paid both of their paychecks. He wasn’t worried.
"I-I don’t know what’s come over me." Andrew whispered, his voice feeling tense and raw. A soft throat clearing behind them had both of them tensing.
"Mr. Beckett, if you remain like that, I might be able to calmly take some of Andrew’s blood. We’ll have some juice nearby just to make sure he doesn’t pass out. How does that sound, Andrew?" Andrew hesitated for only a second before offering his less punctured arm. He buried his face into Maxwell’s throat, finding an overwhelming comfort in the man. He flinched when the needle pierced his skin, but it was over quickly.
Maxwell coaxed Andrew’s head up, helping the man drink the second glass of orange juice in a way that would have been too intimate if the two of them hadn’t been caught up in each other’s pheromones.
When Andrew was finished with the glass, and the vials that weren’t getting the fast tests done on them were packed away, Andrew finally felt himself relax. Maxwell didn’t get out of his lap, letting the other man find comfort in him.
"Alright, so these tests should take about fifteen minutes, since they are normally done when someone is in a dangerous situation. I’m going to continue asking my questions, alright Andy?" Michael asked.
"Would you like us to leave?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew shook his head.
"It doesn’t matter. You’ll probably hear me talking even if you go to another room, or you’ll listen back to the tape. I’m not bothered by it." Andrew told him, and Maxwell frowned. Whether he was right or not, Maxwell didn’t like that he was putting on a brave face.
"Are you sure?" He confirmed again, and Andrew nodded.
"Yeah." Andrew looked over Maxwell’s shoulder in Michael’s direction, who gave him a slightly awkward smile.
"This one might be a little awkward, but, did you engage in any sexual activity while you were there?" He asked, and Andrew felt Maxwell tense.
"I...don’t know. There were several times where I passed out and have no memories of those times. I don’t believe they did, since they didn’t want to ruin their test subject. They were planning to have me mate with T-Dr. Williams once it was done though." Maxwell’s grip became bruising.
"That fucking cunt wanted to WHAT?" He growled, and Mr. Newman’s eyes widened, while Michael flinched at the sudden wave of pheromones that came off of Maxwell. Andrew chuckled.
"It wasn’t going to happen, Maxwell. See? I’m here, and unmated." Maxwell glared at Andrew, but Andrew knew it wasn’t directed at him.
"I can’t wait to sink my claws into her no good fucking brown haired bitch of a head. I’m going to ruin her whole life, make her a laughing stock, and then ruin everything else. Her life, her family’s life, everyone who’s ever known her. Minus yours, of course." Maxwell assured him, and Andrew knew he probably should have stopped him. The look on Michael’s face told him so, but instead Andrew shook his head.
"Max, what about the company?" Maxwell snorted.
"What company? The one that is holding your career hostage? Yeah, they chose the wrong person to try to push around. Did you know her aunt got her a job there? No fucking wonder they wouldn’t listen to you." Andrew’s happiness at Maxwell’s pure rage dimmed slightly. Maxwell froze. "What? What’s wrong?" He asked, shifting the grip he had on Andrew’s neck to his face, looking into his eyes.
"She...She had planned this for years. I was never...she never saw me as a person." Every heart in the room broke at the soft words spoken by the giant man. Maxwell exhaled slowly, carefully, before pressing his lips against the other man’s forehead. Andrew blinked, the tears falling in a steady stream.
"She never deserved you." Maxwell told him fiercely, meaning every word. "Michael, please continue with your questions. I doubt Andrew is going to stop crying any time soon. When he gets like this he’s a lost cause." Andrew protested immediately.
"Hey! Just because you’ve seen me at some low points, doesn’t mean that you can say mean things about me!" Maxwell stared down at Andrew’s big, watering brown eyes, the tears slowing the longer he looked at him, until a slow, steady smile broke his lips.
"Andrew, I’m not speaking as if I don’t have experience. Who nursed you the night you heard the news, hmm? Do you even remember what you did that night?" Maxwell intentionally said it slowly, deliberately, making sure every innuendo could be misinterpreted in his words. Andrew’s face flushed.
"Y-You said I didn’t do anything!" Andrew protested, and Maxwell chuckled.
"Did I? I can’t remember." Andrew’s mouth dropped open, and Maxwell’s gaze slid to his lips. Andrew snapped his mouth shut so that he wouldn’t see him drool. Maxwell’s eyes were hot, a blue fire that was beginning to stir something inside of him.
