Chapter 219: A day not quite the norm

Several times throughout the day, a nervous, anxious Maxwell would show up. Mr. Newman would always be behind him, looking just as nervous and anxious as Maxwell himself.

After the first time he showed up, Andrew knew what he needed. Quietly, Andrew would get up, being tugged on by Maxwell gently, urgently, until they were in the storage room. Once there, he would bury his face into Andrew’s chest, inhaling his scent over and over until he calmed down.

Andrew would just run his fingers through his hair, down his back, offering him comfort. Maxwell would shudder, embracing the man like he was everything he’d ever need and Andrew did his best to control himself. He hadn’t kissed Maxwell again, knowing that if they did that a second time, he wasn’t going to be as gentle or as chaste.

Andrew could feel his desire building up inside of him now that his fears had been alleviated. He knew it wasn’t exactly right for him to take advantage of Maxwell when he was in this state. He was sure if Maxwell was a little more himself, he would agree.

So, Andrew would reign it in. He had self control, but he knew when not to push himself. Kissing the man would be too much, but rubbing his face against the top of his head and giving him static? Not a problem.

Of course he’d smooth it out before Maxwell left. He wasn’t terrible, or even that angry at him.

Andrew wouldn’t lie and say that he didn’t also like this new behaviour of Maxwell’s. Being forced into a hug and surrounded by Maxwell’s scent soothed him in a way that he couldn’t put into words. He’d been like this from day one, so it was a little nice that Maxwell was returning the favour, even if it was after a terrible argument.

On a rather small plus side, Andre didn’t have to rely on the little satchel he had.

When lunch time had rolled around, both Maxwell and Mr. Newman had shown up to pick him up. Andrew had no idea why, but from Richard’s look, and Dr. Piper’s giggle, it was related to the behaviour that Richard had been trying to warn him about in the morning. Maxwell clearly knew about it, or Mr. Newman did, and wanted to prevent Andrew from experiencing it for as long as possible.

Andrew didn’t mind. It wasn’t any skin off of his back.

Maxwell, however, was a different story.

He held Andrew’s hand in his, clinging to his side like they had never held hands before. Andrew didn’t mind the pda, he was always down for it, but Maxwell? Everyone they passed stared at Andrew like he was a mythical creature. Andrew was sure that whatever rumours were floating around him would only get worse, and he didn’t know what to do about that.

Mr. Newman wasn’t any help either. He looked resigned, carrying the bag with the left overs from the dinner they had gone to yesterday.

When they arrived at Maxwell’s office, his team of other secretaries seemed relieved to see Andrew in the flesh, while Maxwell yanked the bag out of Mr. Newman’s hand and banished him from his office for the whole lunch period.

Andrew knew what that sounded like to everyone else, but he knew better. Maxwell was in no state to be sexual, he was too shaken from the events that happened for that part of him to even be awake. Hell, Maxwell should be asleep for the next two days as far as Andrew was concerned.

He did not feel comfortable being intimate with him right now. Andrew shouldn’t have worried in the slightest. Like he had predicted, Maxwell wasn’t even thinking of him that way.

Instead, the man had stayed glued to Andrew, following him about as Andrew went about warming up the food again, getting them cutlery to eat with, and then forcing Andrew to sit next to him on the small couch in the office so that they could be touching each other as they ate.

Maxwell even demanded to be fed like he had been in the restaurant. Andrew didn’t mind humouring him, especially as each second they spent together it appeared as if Maxwell was unwinding, relaxing and becoming more of himself.

The time for lunch felt too short, but soon enough, he had to head back. Maxwell was distraught. His big blue eyes watering like a giant baby and Andrew didn’t know what to do. All he could think of was to lift up his sweater, swallowing the other man in the fabric as he pressed him against his bare chest.

Apparently that was the right answer, even if fixing Maxwell’s hair afterwards had been a nightmare. Andrew was also aware that he had unlocked something in Maxwell, something he hadn’t realised had always been there, but dormant.

Maxwell was developing into a hardcore cuddlier. He had already been pretty handsy when they were alone at home, but he had seen something in his eyes after he had taken his sweater off of him. Maxwell was going to ask for that kind of treatment again, and Andrew wasn’t sure what to think of that.

Up until now, Maxwell had behaved like a beta, but with omega pheromones. Andrew felt like something had switched, and he didn’t know when or how, but something was about to change.

He felt like he was going to have to send Maxwell to that damn hospital more often, and he shuddered at the thought. Andrew wasn’t sure if he could go with him the second time, at least not alone with Maxwell.

Maybe he could convince Michael to sit in the waiting room with him? As support, and a fellow Doctor? He could weigh in on the things he didn’t understand, even if he specialised in alphas?

Either way, Maxwell’s behaviour, even as they dropped him off back at his office concerned Andrew. It really made Andrew wonder what was going to happen once Maxwell got him alone, and in his house. No Mr. Newman around to keep an eye on him, no meetings that he needed to attend. Just him and Andrew, alone.

For the first time in over a week.

The end of the day came sooner than Andrew anticipated, and Richard was nose deep in his research as Dr. Piper and Dr. Cox raced around. Both women had plans after work today. Dr. Cox had her usual plans of picking up her daughter from daycare, while Dr. Piper had something a little more exciting.

Apparently, Dr. Piper had a date. With who? She wouldn’t say, and that seemed to worry both Dr. Cox and Richard. Andrew, who didn’t know better, simply wished her luck on her date and sent her on her way.

Andrew wanted to ask for more details, but his free moments were taken up by Maxwell. Not that he was complaining! It just meant he’d have to ask Richard once the girls were gone, even if he wanted to hear Dr. Cox’s opinion as well. It was clear that the two didn’t like the idea of her going on a date, or who she was going on a date with.

Even if she hadn’t revealed that fact, it was clear that those two knew that something was up, and Andrew was too nosy when it came to his coworkers, and something that had nothing to do with him, that he wanted to know everything too.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get a chance to ask Richard as Maxwell came to pick him up, his jacket on, and a little less nervous than he had been at lunch and the visits after lunch. It appeared that the fact that Andrew hadn’t lied and had dropped pretty much everything to help soothe him had done wonders on him.

Richard, still working. Glanced up as Andrew turned off his computer and got to his feet.

"All done for the day? Is boss man here to pick you up?" Richard asked, clearly able to see that Maxwell was here. Maxwell cleared his throat.

"Yes, boss man is here to pick him up. Do you need him for anything else? I know I interrupted quite a bit today." Maxwell admitted and Richard sighed.

He pushed his chair out so that he was out from behind his desk, but still sitting down. He looked at Maxwell, shaking his head.

"If one man’s sacrifice is enough to get things back to normal, I would gladly throw Andrew to the wolves." Andrew rolled his eyes, not believing him for a minute. Maxwell, however, shifted nervously.

"Are you sure?" He asked and Richard laughed.

"No, of course not. I’m sure you are aware, but if I thought that you two were actually bad for each other, you wouldn’t be like this again. Not if I had any say in it." Richard said sternly. Andrew was surprised by his words, while Maxwell wasn’t in the slightest.

"I am glad that you didn’t find that I was bad for him." Maxwell said and Andrew thought this conversation was ridiculous. He was about to voice that when Richard spoke up again.

"It’s not just about Andrew. I was speaking about both of you. If either of you seemed toxic for each other, that’s it. I like Andrew a lot, but this is where I work. I like my job too much to ruin my workplace over a relationship I could prevent." Richard said as Andrew pulled on his jacket.

"Alright, enough of that. Neither of us need to worry about that right now Richard, and while I appreciate you looking out for me, do you honestly think you could stop me?" Andrew asked and Richard grinned at him.

"Who knows?" He said cryptically, before he pushed himself back towards his desk. "Good night you two. See you tomorrow." Richard said, waving and Andrew shook his head, picking up his bag and taking Maxwell’s hand in his.

"Shall we ignore that idiot and get going?" Andrew asked and Maxwell turned his gaze to him, then nodded.

"Yeah. Let’s go."
