Chapter 199: An omega’s anger

Chapter 199: An omega’s anger

Maxwell shot Andrew a look, but Andrew forged ahead. "I’ve noticed that Maxwell isn’t bringing up the reason why I asked him to come and speak to you. Is it alright if I speak up?" Andrew asked and the Doctor furrowed her brow.

She glanced at Maxwell, who was now tight-lipped, his jaw tight. She looked at Andrew, who’s jaw was also tight, but his gaze was determined.

"Well, normally I’d say no, but it seems rather serious if you are speaking up. Is it something you’ve brought to his attention already?" Andrew nodded.

"Yes. I know that I really don’t have any legs to stand on here since you are his Doctor, but it was very concerning to witness. I wouldn’t say shortly after, but a few days to less than two weeks after Maxwell’s heat, while we were at his brother’s wedding, we took a moment to ourselves. During that time, Maxwell stopped talking and began to move as if he was on autopilot. He was like this for several minutes, and when he came to, he had no memory of what he had done during this time." The Doctor’s expression was quite serious.

"That is concerning." Andrew nodded, squeezing Maxwell’s hand. He knew he was probably upset that Andrew had brought it up, but he was not going to leave when he had no idea what that had meant for him. When it came to Maxwell and his health and safety, Andrew was going to do things like this in the future.

He would apologise later, and explain it to him as well, but he was not going to leave without letting the Doctor in charge of him know.

"Yes. Of course, his family doesn’t know, and we do not want them to worry about Maxwell, but I can’t remain silent about this when it comes to his health. I don’t think it’s normal, and I’m worried about it." She frowned, shifting in her chair as she sighed.

"Of course. Has this happened again since?" Andrew shook his head.

"Not that I am aware of. Max, has this happened again?" Andrew asked, worried that Maxwell wouldn’t answer out of anger. As it stood, it took Maxwell a few minutes, but he did eventually respond.

"...No, it has not happened since." Maxwell’s tone was tight, and Andrew knew he was in trouble. He hardened himself. Andrew was in the wrong, but he would be damned if Maxwell made him feel bad for standing up for him. He would obviously apologise, and mean it, but he would do this again if it happened again.

"That’s good. But, that is concerning. It could have been the fact that there were a lot of pheromones around, and with Maxwell’s sensitivity it could have overwhelmed his senses and set him off. There is also the fact that he was less than two weeks out from his last heat. It is a good thing to point out, especially if he was behaving strangely during his heat. I can’t say for sure that these things are related, but I’d like to take another blood sample for something we don’t normally test, just to be safe. I’ll send the request right now." She told them and Andrew and Maxwell remained quiet.

"How long will that take? Should we wait around after to speak to you again?" Andrew asked, since he had a feeling that Maxwell wouldn’t ask after Andrew had spoken over him. The Doctor shook her head, glancing at the now silent Maxwell.

"No, you are more than welcome to leave. I can always call if we find something truly out of the ordinary." She said and spoke up.

"Am I free to go now?" He asked and Andrew winced. That was not good.

"Of course, Maxwell. We’ll speak again soon. Ah, please make sure to come in after your next heat, just so we can make sure that what is happening isn’t anything to be worried about." Maxwell nodded, getting up and shaking Andrew’s hand off. Stiffly, he headed for the door and Andrew, knowing that this was the reaction he was about to get, sighed. He closed his eyes as he heard the door slam behind Maxwell before he got up himself. He gave the Doctor a smile, before he opened the door and raced after Maxwell.

Despite his size, or because of his size, he was quick. He’d already crossed a lot of space, and Andrew nearly yanked his arm out of its socket when he grabbed his hand. Maxwell spun, anger on his features, but Andrew wasn’t about to back down either.

"Max, I-"

"How could you do that? Did you think I wasn’t going to bring it up? Or did you get off on it because I brought you with me?" Andrew’s eyes widened at the anger in his tone, and the way it twisted like a knife in his gut. Maxwell was a cat with every hair spiked, his tail puffed out. "I had no idea that you of all people could be that much of an alpha. Did you feel better? Did speaking for your omega partner make you feel all nice and big?" Andrew was shocked.

He wasn’t sure where this was coming from, but it hurt to hear.

"Max, I’m sorry you feel this way, but it sounded like we were winding down, and I was still really concerned about what happened that time." Maxwell huffed, attempting to break Andrew’s hold on his arm but he wasn’t able to. Andrew released him immediately and Maxwell huffed. His face was red, his blue eyes sharp and angry. He crossed his arms across his chest, and Andrew hadn’t seen him this angry in a long, long time.

"Concerned? I was just about to bring it up, but because of the way you spoke over me, and then answered for me, that really rubbed me the wrong way. I truly had no idea that you could be like this." That felt cruel, and Andrew felt his face twist in pain.

"What are you saying, Max? I-I know you don’t like when people speak over you, or speak for you. Speaking about my own experiences, and what I observed isn’t really speaking for you, and if I’m honest, I have always been like this." Maxwell snorted.

"Yeah? You have always been like this?" The way he was speaking was not sitting well with Andrew, and Andrew took a moment to think about what he had said. He jerked.

"Wait, are you behaving like this because you thought-Maxwell Beckett, are you accusing me of trying to boss you around because you are an omega?" Andrew was genuinely hurt, and Maxwell looked away, his jaw working. Andrew’s heart ached. "How? How could you ever think that? When have I ever given the impression that I would ever do something like that?" Andrew asked, seriously hurt by Maxwell’s words and thoughts.

"You just did it. It was subtle, but you did. The Doctor only spoke to you." Andrew frowned.

"Because you stiffened up like a board and it was clear that speaking about it wasn’t something you wanted to do." Maxwell huffed, rolling his eyes and Andrew took a step back. "Maxwell, you have been the one telling me that I need to accept my change, and embrace it. You have been the one saying that. I...I understand that you have a hard time being an omega in a field where mostly alphas work, and I have never considered you lesser. Whether I was a beta, or an alpha. I just...I never thought that you would react this way." Andrew swallowed. "I would have done what I did before even as a beta, Maxwell. My secondary sex has nothing to do with who I am as a person. You were teaching me that." Andrew’s heart ached.

Maxwell wasn’t looking at him still, his arms crossed, his jaw tight. Andrew wasn’t even sure if he was listening to him. This was not how he expected today to end. This was not what he had in mind. He thought that they would get through the Doctor’s visit, he and Maxwell would talk about what happened and then they might pick up food and head home and Andrew would have kissed the needle marks on his arms.

This was not what he had in mind.

The words left his lips before he even knew it.

"I am not like the other alphas you slept with, Maxwell." Maxwell jerked at that. "I’m not going to just let you push me around as you like. Admittedly, I don’t mind when you do, but there are some things that I am not going to back down from. Your health is one of them. If you can’t accept that..." Andrew trailed off, his heart in his throat. He shook his head, staring at Maxwell as the man still refused to look at him.

Stubborn. He was stubborn. Andrew exhaled slowly.

"I’ll leave you the car." Andrew mumbled, before he moved. He brushed past Maxwell, hoping that he would reach out, stop him, but he didn’t. Andrew’s mouth thinned, and he had a feeling that he was going to lose his mind shortly.

He needed to get out of a place that was so full of omegas. He didn’t want to force anyone to feel what he was feeling right now. Pulling on his jacket, Andrew numbly made his way to the exit of the hospital. Stepping outside, he found their car and shook his head. He hadn’t driven the car, so he didn’t need to hand over the keys.

He’d been too nervous.

Andrew laughed, the sound harsh, before he popped the collar on his jacket and began to walk. He needed to clear his head, and being in a small, cramped car right now would only set him off. Without Maxwell’s scent, he was going to spiral. He knew that.

Maxwell knew that. But with his emotional state right now, Andrew was going to have to rely on himself. Andrew knew it was just an argument. Couples argued, but this also felt...

Andrew didn’t even want to put the thoughts out there. The last time he’d seen Maxwell this angry was when he was acting as his bodyguard and the man who had offended Maxwell had been humiliated and Maxwell had cut all ties with him.

Andrew shivered, and it had nothing to do with the cold.
