Chapter 197: Trying to soothe the big baby

"Andy, stop pacing. If you aren’t going to get any work done, why didn’t you take a half day?" Richard was making fun of him, while also being exasperated with him. Andrew felt a little guilty. He had thought that he was going to be able to get some work done, but that appeared to not be the case.

He wasn’t even the one going to the Doctor, it was Maxwell, but he couldn’t help it. He was just so concerned about him, especially in the face of Maxwell appearing not to be worried in the slightest. He’d asked him last night, after they had curled up in bed after a particularly toe-curling love making, and Maxwell had basically brushed it off.

Said he wasn’t worried at all.

Andrew felt like he was freaking out for the both of them.

"I’m sorry Richard. I thought I was going to have more of my brain today, but I guess I’m just a mess." Andrew sighed, slamming his head against the desk he had been trying to work at. Dr. Cox and Dr. Piper stopped what they were working on and finally asked about what was going on.

It did surprise Andrew that Dr. Cox asked. She usually kept to herself, or at least, wasn’t prying as much into Andrew’s personal life as the other two were. Richard made sense, but Dr. Piper just appeared to be a happy-go-lucky kind of person.

"What has you so distracted, Dr. Nice?" Dr. Cox asked and Andrew sighed heavily.

"Max and I are going to the Doctor today. Or, more like I’m accompanying him to a Doctor’s visit he said I could join him at. I’m just so worried. I know I’m being ridiculous because I’m the one worried for his health, but he’s not worried at all. But when the situation is reversed, he has Michael all over me, making sure I’m okay." Andrew grumbled. "Is it so wrong that I’m worried for him?" Dr. Cox frowned, her expression thoughtful.

"Did something instigate this sudden urge for him to see a physician?" She asked and Andrew sighed, closing his eyes. He thought back to that vacant look in Maxwell’s eyes and a shiver ran down his spine.

"Yes. I...ugh, I know he’s your boss, so I don’t know how much I should say." Andrew mumbled, frustrated and Dr. Piper laughed.

"We aren’t talking about Mr. Beckett, the person, Dr. Nice, we’re speaking about Mr. Beckett, an omega with a unique constitution who started a pharmaceutical company because of that. We aren’t going to pry into your intimate details, just speak as if you were trying to explain a specific person from one of our studies." It was good advice, but even then, there were going to have to be things he left out.

Andrew sighed again, before rubbing his forehead against the desk.

"Maxwell, as far as I know, has never been with a true alpha before." Andrew started. "I, as a former beta, have no idea what differences that would or could have for an omega over time, but especially during a heat." Andrew explained, and it helped speaking about it this way. Taking away some of the emotions from his explanation. "I, of course, suggested that maybe he should see a Doctor after his most recent heat, which I might have also played a role simply by being an alpha for bringing forward a few weeks? Days? He wasn’t clear about that aspect, just that it was early. He was also exhibiting some...unusual characteristics for him. I do not know what is normal behaviour for omegas, since my Mom told me that they were always different per person, but it was greatly concerning to hear that Maxwell wasn’t behaving like himself."

Dr. Cox moved forward, a notepad and pen in hand, still sitting in her hair.

"Interesting. Were these violent tendencies or anything like that?" Andrew was glad that his face was against the table as his whole face went red.

"No, nothing violent in the way you are thinking. No hitting or anything like that. But, behaviours he considered strange for himself. Then, something even more concerning happened to the point that my Doctor, Michael, said he should go see a Doctor. We finally booked an appointment, and now this afternoon we are going. I am nervous. If they say that everything is normal, I don’t know if I’ll be able to believe them." Dr. Cox made a soft noise in her throat, the sound of her pen whipping across the pad in her hand.

"Let me ask something, was he showing any strange behaviours before you thought the heat was upon him the first time?" She asked and Andrew had to think back carefully.

"Well, obviously when his heat was coming up, he was behaving strangely, but I don’t think he was showing any strange behaviours until after we spent his heat together."

"With condoms, I assume?" Andrew laughed.

"Absolutely. I am especially not ready to have children after so recently manifested, and I would never do something like that without his full consent." Andrew stated firmly and Dr. Cox sighed.

"Well, nothing is conclusive, and I am not a specialist in omegas, but my ex partner was one. Sometimes after a heat they do have some changes depending on the intensity of the heat." She hesitated. "Is this your first heat with Mr. Beckett?" Andrew raised his head and nodded, meeting her gaze.

"Yes. We’ve known each other for longer, obviously, but I haven’t spent any of those with him." Dr. Cox nodded.

"So my only speculation would be that the heat must have shifted something with his hormones. There could also be something that Mr. Beckett isn’t even aware of, but given the information you have said, that would be what I think could have happened. I would say that with a small bit of hormone therapy, or something of the like he should be perfectly fine. I’m sure that his Doctor will order labs and other things, but I do not think it is anything dangerous." Andrew exhaled slowly as Dr. Cox smiled at him. "I hope that this was able to relieve some of your worries. I remember what it felt like when I used to accompany my partner to his Doctor visits. It can be quite stressful, but the fact you are so concerned about him is a good sign." Andrew nodded, thankful, before what Dr. Cox said sunk in.

She’d had...an omega partner before who was a male? But...she was a single Mom now. Did that mean...?

Andrew was pretty sure it would be rude to ask her about it, so he simply nodded, giving her a smile.

"Thank you for your kind words, Dr. Cox. It really means a lot. I felt like my head was going to explode." Andrew admitted and she laughed.

"Omegas can do that to people. I feel like my struggles aren’t ending either." Her smile was warm, but slightly bitter-sweet. Dr. Piper gasped.

"What? What does that mean? Do you have another partner?" She asked quickly and Dr. Cox laughed.

"No no, nothing like that. I just...I have a sneaking suspicion that Bella is going to be just like her Dad." Dr. Cox frowned. "Something some of the kids in her daycares have said to me have gotten to me, and when talking to other Moms and Dads, it sounds like it’s a common pre-manifestation thing for omegas." When Andrew and everyone else gave her interested, but confused looks, she sighed. She put the pad of paper and pen down on her desk, rubbing her face with her hands. "They say she smells...sweet. Bella doesn’t wear any scents. She’s actually rather sensitive to them. I can’t smell anything because I’m a beta and I..." It was clear she was worried, and Andrew frowned.

"Do you want me to check it out?" Andrew asked carefully. He raised his hands when she looked over at him. "Obviously, I mean nothing suspicious by it, but as a true alpha, I will always be able to smell. I can check and see if it’s just a one time thing, or if something else is going on. Plus, I can also speak to some of my friends who have babies as well and see what they have to say." Andrew said and Dr. Cox relaxed.

"Would you? I would be grateful. Her daycare has been kicking up a stink, basically trying to discriminate against her because of it since some of the kids call her ’stinky’. I’ve told them I don’t use any scents or anything but it’s getting to a point of contention." She admitted, and Andrew’s expression hardened.

"Jesus. I had no idea daycares were so fucking picky." Andrew muttered and Dr. Cox sighed, her smile bitter.

"You have no idea. They can be incredibly difficult to deal with. Of course, I am grateful for any help I can get, but it’s just...I’m starting to wonder if it’s worth it." She muttered and Andrew felt his heart throb for this woman who was doing her damn best. He could clearly see his Mom in her, and he knew that wasn’t exactly right, but he felt a great deal of sympathy for her.

"Well, it’s not exactly related to you, but I think telling you might help ease some of your worries. I don’t know when it will be happening, but Max is in discussions to open up a cafeteria and a daycare center for the company." Dr. Cox froze, before she cast a suspicious look towards Dr. Piper. She looked away quickly.

"Why? It has never been part of their worries before." She started and Andrew could tell she was growing suspicious. Uh oh.

"W-Well, Max started the company when he was young. He wasn’t exactly thinking about health and wellness in that regard, but now that he’s getting older, he’s really started to think about family and families and what his employees would need to grow and flourish. With his brother’s husband expecting, these things just...made sense, I guess?" Andrew shrugged, trying not to sound like he was the one who pitched the idea in the first place.

Dr. Cox gaped at him.

"Which brother?" She asked and Andrew swallowed.

"Oh, the oldest. Ben. His husband is named Amir." Andrew told her. He scratched awkwardly at the back of his head. "Actually, Amir was who I was talking about when I was asking you all those questions. He’s pretty...no, really nervous. Anxious." Andrew admitted and Dr. Cox seemed to lower her suspicions.

"Oh, well, that’s exciting if that’s the case. We do have lots of people who work here who could have kids, and it from an outside perspective, it would look good for a company that employs a lot of omegas if they had a daycare. I can’t say I won’t be relieved though. I know our company would never hire anyone who would discriminate against omega children." Andrew grinned, nodding.

"Of course. Max would have their head if anyone in his employ did that." His phone vibrated, his timer to head for the main office going off and all happy and warm feelings faded. Andrew was, once again, pale, and Richard laughed.

"All that hard work that Dr. Cox put in, and for what? You look like you’re going to your grave, not a Doctor’s visit. Get going. Mr. Beckett is probably waiting for you." Richard forced Andrew to get to his feet, Dr. Cox watching on with a small smile.

"It will be fine, Dr. Nice." She told him, her smile reaching her eyes and Andrew nodded numbly. Richard smacked his shoulder.

"Cheer up man. If you go looking like that, even Mr. Beckett might get nervous." Andrew swallowed, before he nodded.

"I’ll take the time in the elevator to get my shit together." He whispered and Richard laughed, looking at him as if he really believed him.

"Uh huh. Yeah. Sure. Get going, big guy. Here’s your phone, and put your coat on in the elevator. You’re going to be a wreck if you two ever have kids." Andrew went even paler and Dr. Cox snorted, covering her mouth with Dr. Piper laughed loudly.

"Richard! He looks like he’s going to faint! Just shut up and get him to the elevators, alright?" Dr. Piper scolded, and Richard rolled his eyes before doing as asked. Andrew just tried to calm down. He didn’t even want to imagine that. Maxwell, in pain?

Awful. What an awful thought.
