Chapter 176: A little sour, a little sweet

Andrew couldn’t believe his ears. That was what she was worried about? This damn woman!

Maxwell’s laughter filled his ears and Andrew felt a shiver run down his spine.

"You want him to not report you, huh? Well, I don’t care if Andy doesn’t say anything, because I sure as hell won’t let this stand. Especially when I know that you have treated other people, my employees, poorly. I will not let this stand, and in fact, your behaviour, your actions, have made our board of directors decide that outsourcing childcare is no longer a viable option for our employees who have children. You better believe that my brother certainly won’t be bringing his child here when they are born, and no child of mine would ever step foot here." Maxwell tore into her, making her already pale form shake.

"Max." Andrew warned, and Maxwell rolled his eyes.

"I cannot believe that someone who is so prejudiced against people of a lower social status can remain in business the way that you are. For someone who claims that they teach children good manners and prepare them for a life ahead of them, you certainly have not displayed that type of behaviour in the small amount of time I have found myself in your unfortunate presence." Andrew almost felt bad for the woman.

She looked like she was going to lose her mind. Or faint. Possibly both. Everyone else in the room was floored at Maxwell’s words and behaviour, but Andrew wasn’t.

"I would like to add," Andrew started, and Maxwell shut his mouth. "That if you had simply treated me like an equal, we would not have had this embarrassing display. But because you chose to diminish me and my partner at every chance you got, instead of speaking to us like we were human, like we were equals, you are now facing an embarrassing situation that will not make me feel better at the end of the day, but I have a feeling you will feel worse. Genuinely, I worry for your business if this is the treatment you have shown to your potential clients, and I feel sorry for the parents who hear about the ’good work’ that you do, only to be berated, and treated like they are less than any other simply because they have a few less zeros to their sum total." Andrew sighed.

He shook his head, staring down at the woman before him. He doubted that a word would get through to her, but he’d said his peace. Maxwell had taken all of the angry words from him, so he felt it was only fair he dealt the slightly softer warning.

"Maria, I’m sorry we’re speaking so ill of the place Hewett is going." Maxwell told her and Maria shook her head, her eyes wide.

"N-No, it’s fine. I had no idea that they had treated you so poorly. I must have arrived too late to witness it. Did Andy yell?" She asked and Maxwell scoffed.

"Oh, he certainly raised his voice. I was worried his pheromones were going to go out of control, but he did a wonderful job of restraining himself. He’s only recently manifested, and is improving leaps and bounds over everyone else." Maxwell bragged. "Now, let’s get to that coffee shop, shall we?" Maxwell began to wrap himself up with the scarf again, and pulled his gloves out of his pocket, taking his time pulling them on.

"Oh, I would have loved to see that. Would you like a little cup of milkies, Hewie?" Marie cooed to her child, leaving the daycare first. Maxwell was second, giving the manager a pointed look while the onlookers watched, clearly chomping at the bit for more news.

Andrew, the last to leave, sighed and shook his head as he stared at the woman who looked like her whole world was crashing around her.

"I won’t go out of my way to explain what happened here, but no doubt she’s going to ask, and I will tell her the truth. Whatever happens after that, I had no hand in it. Just realise that you made your bed." Andrew told her before he pushed out of the daycare, his heart aching as he thought about all the kids that she might have hurt over the years.

Meeting Maxwell and Maria outside, Maria was happily chatting away to Maxwell.

"Well, as soon as you get it up and running, let me know! I would love to join your daycare, even if I know it’s just for employees. I don’t mind spending more to be somewhere where I know Andy would have checked over everything at least twice. Honestly, I was a little surprised to hear that you two haven’t started a family of your own. I always imagined Andy with kids." Maria was telling Maxwell, and he was nodding.

Hewett was staring at Andrew over his Mom’s shoulder, as if he desperately wanted to be in his arms again. Andrew chuckled, waving at the little guy, He waved back slowly, shoving his other gloved hand into his mouth.

"I would love to have someone Andy is close to in our daycare, but we’ve just started the research and we haven’t even bought a building for it yet. Of course, we’ll keep you updated. It would be a great honour to have your child with us, especially since Hewett seems so taken with Andy." Maxwell glanced behind him at Andrew, who waved as they made their way over to the coffee shop.

"Speaking of, if Andy wouldn’t mind watching Hewie for a moment, I just need to make a quick phone call." Maria said, and Maxwell nodded, offering up Andrew before he could say anything. Andrew, of course, was completely for whatever they needed. Carrying the small boy was no trouble, and he found that he liked it.

He was so small, and delicate, but so trusting. Andrew liked that he brought comfort to such a little guy.

"Here. Pass him over. We’ll meet you in the coffee shop, Maria. You call Zack or whoever you need to." Andrew told her with a smile and Maria gave him a return on, relief on her face.

"Okay good, because Zack has been blowing up my phone since he saw your photo. I’ll be right back, and hopefully with news that Zack is on his way." She handed Hewett over, who greedily reached for Andrew, before dashing off, phone in hand, purse hanging off of her arm. Maxwell laughed, before turning towards Hewett.

"Hello little one. Do you like Uncle Andy?" He asked and both Andrew and Maxwell watched him carefully. Hewett gave a small nod of his head and Andrew melted.

"Awe. I like you too, Hewie." Andrew bent, pressing a kiss against his soft, chubby cheek and when Andrew pulled away, he had a shocked expression on his face. Hewett seemed to love it, giggling, while Andrew stared at Maxwell.

"He’s so soft." Andrew muttered, and Maxwell, who had been staring at them both, blinked, before his whole expression lit up and he started laughing.

"Let’s get both of you babies into the coffee shop before I want to gobble you both up, alright? Now you wanted some milkies, is that right Hewett?" Maxwell asked and Andrew followed after him, smitten with the man who was so easily threatening a woman and now gentling a child as if he had done it a thousand times.

He had thought Maxwell was going to be awkward with him, but instead, he had taken to Hewett like a duck taking to water. Maxwell...Maxwell would make a great parent.

Too bad Andrew wasn’t so sure that he would be a great parent too.

Stepping into the coffee shop, Maxwell quickly unwrapped his scarf from his mouth, and chattering to Hewett, they headed for the counter.

"What do you think Maria would like to drink?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew wasn’t sure what to say. He hadn’t really known her order in the past, and when Maxwell glanced back at him after he’d been silent for a moment, he smirked. "Well, I’m glad to know you weren’t that close." Andrew, surprised at the tone he’d taken, stared at him.

"Max, I don’t know everyone’s coffee order. I barely know my own. I just like it sweet." Andrew said and Maxwell grinned.

"Oh, I know. I’ll get something for us then, and then when she comes in, I’ll just have them put it on my card." Maxwell said. Andrew believed him. Who would ever say no to that?

"So Hewett is getting milkies, I’m getting something sweet, what are you getting Maxy?" Andrew asked and Maxwell hummed. He seemed thoughtful for a long moment.

"A lemonade, I guess? I think I’d like that over anything else." Maxwell muttered and Andrew glanced over the menu.

"They have a green tea mango lemonade. That doesn’t sound too bad." Andrew said and Maxwell nodded.

"Yeah, I think I’ll go with that. You stay here, I’ll go order." Andrew waved as Maxwell moved towards the counter, and Andrew took him and Hewett towards the end of the bar where drinks normally came up. He noticed that they weren’t the only ones from the daycare here, and some of the people were staring at the two of them with wide, shocked expressions.

Andrew could only imagine the firestorm he was creating with Maxwell today. He felt like the whole world that Maxwell was a part of was going to flip and turn on its head all because he had shown up with a man, an alpha, and declared him as his own.

Andrew was actually quite proud to be the alpha that Maxwell was bragging about. He could feel himself puff up with pride.

Andrew noticed Maria right away, and gestured for her to move towards Maxwell first. She blew kisses to her baby, causing Hewett to giggle, before joining Maxwell at the counter. He could tell the two of them were arguing for a moment before Maria sighed, giving in, rattled off her order before stomping her way over to him.

"He just doesn’t give an inch, does he?" Maria huffed and Andrew grinned.

"Isn’t he cute when he orders you around?" Andrew asked and Maria scoffed.

"You’ve really fallen head over heels for him, haven’t you? Gosh, you better invite me to the wedding." She threatened, cooing at her baby in Andrew’s arms.

"Well, I don’t think I have much choice in the guest list, and even if I did, I only have a few people I would really want there." Andrew said and Maria seemed surprised.

"I wouldn’t have thought that. You’re a social butterfly, Andy." Yeah, he might be that way, but he didn’t think that Maxwell would share the same feelings. He was already pretty jealous, and he wouldn’t like that up until Tracey, he’d remained friends with his exes. Most of them, at least.

Most had known that Andrew wasn’t looking for anything serious when they had gotten together, and so everything had ended when they had gotten serious about someone else. Andrew hadn’t minded since it had suited his needs at the time. Maxwell, however, probably wouldn’t invite the people he had been sleeping with, so Andrew wanted to do the same.

That significantly reduced his friends list, but he was not about to admit that in a coffee shop full of people with big ears. Who wanted to know everything about him, secrets or not.
