Chapter 156: A successful lunch

"Mr. Beckett! Ah, and other Mr. Beckett. Thank you so much for joining us. We have your room, and your food all ready for you." The hostess who greeted them at the door was nice, polite, and welcoming. It was clear from her response that this wasn’t the first time that the Beckett’s had been here, and Andrew should have known better.

Thomas was not going to take anyone to a place he hadn’t been to before. He wasn’t that kind of guy. He was of course going to go to a place where he could show off his connection to the people there. He was a big businessman.

Andrew should have known better.

The hostess was very friendly, and Andrew spoke to her a bit, asking her how long she’d been working here, how her day was going, you know, basic friendly things. He could tell that Maxwell was growing tense beside him, and he had no idea why until he saw the reflection of Maxwell’s face in a picture as they were walking down the hallway to their private room.

He was pouting. Maxwell was pouting because he was being friendly to someone else. Even though they were holding hands, publicly declaring that they were together. It was adorable and Andrew had to do his best to keep his composure.

Andrew paid attention to where they were going, letting Michael take over the conversation once he noticed Maxwell’s behaviour. The hostess had taken them to a second storey, where the rooms above had windows that could overlook the rest of the restaurant. It was actually a rather cool concept, and used up quite a big of the vaulted ceilings.

It felt warm, welcoming, and Andrew enjoyed hearing the voices of the people below chattering and the sound of the people who worked in the kitchen speaking to each other. He doubted that they would like to hear that, and he believed it was because his hearing had improved, so he didn’t plan to inform them.

Andrew did notice that the few people he ran into stared at him with wide, shocked eyes. He could understand why. He had been tall before, but now he was a damn tower. Maxwell was closer in height to the people who worked here, so he was sure they were wondering how they worked together. Andrew felt his face heat.

Damn it, he was uncontrollable. This was inappropriate, and they were having lunch with Maxwell’s Father, for christ sake, Andrew! Get your head out of the gutter!

The hostess opened a sliding door revealing a large table already set for four filled with steaming plates of food. Thomas looked pleased as punch that everything was ready before they arrived, and instructed everyone else to sit down while he went to thank the owner. Michael didn’t hesitate, going and finding a place to sit before placing his briefcase down and opening it.

He motioned to Andrew to either sit next to him, or across from him, and knowing Maxwell’s thoughts, Andrew sat across from him. Andrew scooted closer to him, waiting for Michael to pull out his usual equipment. He wasn’t surprised in the slightest when Michael pulled out a needle to draw his blood, and Andrew pulled off his layers of jackets before rolling up his sleeves and offering his normal arm up to Michael.

"Do you really need to take his blood?" Maxwell asked, sitting down like a professional and calmly staring at the piles of food that his Father had ordered.

"We should. He’s run into several omegas that aren’t you, Mr. Beckett, so we need to see if he had any fluctuations. Good or bad. I would say just from observing him, he’s fine, but I want to make sure that on the smallest level possible that Andrew is doing okay." Michael to him, and Maxwell sighed.

"I can’t argue with you when you phrase it like that." Maxwell muttered, looking away moodily and Andrew had to bite his lip.

"I’m fine with needles now, Max." Andrew told him and Maxwell grumbled.

"I just think you shouldn’t be exposed to them too much, alright? Is that too much to ask?" Andrew glanced at Michael, who was still preparing and took a second to lean over, pressing a kiss against Maxwell’s cheek.

Maxwell turned, giving him a look as Andrew grinned at him.

"No, it’s not. I’m very grateful that you think about me so deeply, but I’m going to be fine. I promise. It’s not a woman, it’s Michael, and he’s already done it many times without any pain. Never with any pain. So it’s okay." Maxwell’s expression shifted slightly.

"So it’s okay because he isn’t a woman?" He asked and Andrew’s smile froze. He swallowed thickly before he chuckled.

"Uh, well, I’m not sure. We haven’t...tested that side yet." Andrew joked and Maxwell’s brows drew together.

"Andy, if that was a problem-"

"It’s okay for right now, isn’t it? I don’t want to talk about this right now, Max. It’s not a never, I just...as soon as the words left my lips I realised that they might be true. Give me some time to stew with the thought." Maxwell reached out, placing his hand on Andrew’s thigh. Andrew tried not to jump as Maxwell rubbed his thumb against his skin comfortingly.

"Okay. Take all the time you need. I was just concerned it was something you had already realised." Maxwell’s expression was filled with concern and Andrew chuckled.

"I don’t like lying to you." Andrew told him and Maxwell’s shoulders relaxed.

"I know. I don’t like lying to you either."

"Am I interrupting something?" Thomas asked as he opened the door, his eyes sparkling and Maxwell glowered at him.

"Not anymore." He replied and Thomas laughed. Even Michael’s shoulders shook.

"Hey, I was still in the room. Andrew wouldn’t have allowed that." Andrew nodded slowly in agreement and Maxwell blinked.

"Wouldn’t have allowed it?" Maxwell repeated and Michael froze. Andrew laughed. With his free hand he squeezed the hand Maxwell had on his thigh.

"I don’t like to do that kind of pda, Maxy. Michael gets it. You don’t even like pda, so I wouldn’t do anything that would make you uncomfortable." Maxwell nodded slowly, and Andrew winked at Michael.

Andrew knew what Michael had been implying. It was an alpha thing. The crazy possessiveness. Andrew had experienced it during Maxwell’s heat, and was happy that it had lightened the chokehold it’d had around his throat since his heat had finished. Andrew was happy to feel himself again.

"Alright. I’ve finished thanking the crew, so why don’t we dig in? We have a limited amount of time, right Max?" Thomas said with a grin. It was so wholly Ben that Andrew couldn’t help but laugh.

"Yes. Let’s dig in while Michael finishes up my check up." Andrew said and Michael chuckled, shaking his head before he grabbed for Andrew’s arm again and pulled it towards him. Andrew let him do so, surprised as Maxwell began to put food on his plate for him.

It was a touching thing for him to do, since usually it was the other way around. Andrew often made sure that Maxwell’s plate was full and that he ate everything. It was one of the few obvious things that Andrew wouldn’t let slide.

Maxwell was already too skinny for his liking. The man needed more meat on his bones. He bruised easily too. It worried Andrew. He remembered that they had discussed going to an omega doctor when Maxwell got back and that had slipped through the cracks as they prepared for Andrew’s re-entry into the working society.

Now might be the time to make sure that Maxwell did go. He should speak to him about it this week. They still hadn’t found out about the reason behind why Maxwell had gone into that strange state, nor why he had the urge to baby trap Andrew.

Andrew did consider it an urge, since Maxwell was usually so straightforward about things. And he would have never attempted something that Andrew had actively said he wasn’t okay with if he wanted to keep Andrew in his life.

Maxwell had given him no hints that he wanted to hurt Andrew that way, which led him to believe it wasn’t something he had done with his complete control.

Either way, that could wait. For now, it was the delicious food placed before him that drew his attention, and the way that Thomas was egging Maxwell on in the way only a parent could. Maxwell’s normally calm expression was full of emotions, and Andrew watched them as Michael worked away on him calmly and carefully. Before he packed up his samples, gave Andrew a bandaid, and began to eat in earnest as well.

Andrew had worried that Thomas had ordered too much food, but before he knew it, the plates were nearly empty, and Andrew had the realisation that most of it had gone to him. The three other men at the table looked smug, proud, and Andrew only felt embarrassed.

"Were you hungry? Did you not eat enough at breakfast?" Maxwell asked, and Andrew would have believed he was just being caring if it wasn’t for the smug look on his face.

"I-I ate enough." Andrew muttered, flushed and Thomas laughed.

"Do you need more? I can always order more and have it delivered." Andrew shook his head.

"No! Seriously, it was enough food." Andrew told them and Michael hummed, pulling out his notebook.

"I’ll make a note of it, in any case. It might be related to stress, or even running into other omegas throughout the day. Your body could be compensating for that." Andrew groaned.

"I just ate a little more than usual, alright? Why are you making such a big deal about it?" Andrew protested and Maxwell chuckled. He leaned in, pinching Andrew’s cheek, much to Andrew’s displeasure.

"Because you look so cute when you get flustered like that. It’s a rare thing, so I like to tease you about it." Thomas chuckled.

"I don’t know about the cute part, but I do agree with Max on this. It’s fun to tease you Andrew. Your expressions change easily. It’s a nice change from my expressionless sons." He sighed heavily, playing it up, as if he wasn’t the reason his sons had such good poker faces. Maxwell rolled his eyes, before an alarm went off and both Thomas and Maxwell checked their phones.

"Well, that’s enough of that. We need to get back to work, Dad." Maxwell hesitated slightly. "Thank you for lunch. This was...nice." Thomas nodded, smiling.

"You’re welcome, Max. Always happy to make time for you." He told his son and Maxwell nodded, before getting to his feet. Andrew could tell that Thomas was vibrating, he was so excited.

While Maxwell wasn’t looking, Andrew gave Thomas a thumbs up and Thomas nearly choked, before he laughed quietly. He gave Andrew a thumbs up in return when Maxwell had his back turned, and Andrew felt his chest warm.

Maxwell wasn’t as opposed to getting close to his family as he had thought, and Thomas had made at least one step in the right direction. Andrew hoped he was able to watch this relationship bloom to completion. He was sure it was going to be beautiful.
