Chapter 154: We all drink the Mr. Beckett is cool juice here
The two other ladies in the department were both betas as well. Andrew would be the first alpha in the department since it was formed. He held more status because he was also a true alpha, and Andrew had hated that at first.
Until everyone explained that it was an asset.
Unlike Andrew, most true alphas hated being involved with research. They would avoid human trials, would ignore requests, even if they were threatened. They were afraid that anyone would consider that something was wrong with them. True alphas normally had a rather toxic, unhealthy view of their secondary sex.
While Andrew didn’t dodge that, his viewpoint was in a completely different direction. He hated being a true alpha because of his father, so he was open to viewing that something might be wrong with his condition and he might need help.
Whereas other true alphas felt the pressure of society on their shoulders to be perfect. Nothing could be wrong with them, everything had to be just right. Andrew thought that was ridiculous, always had, always would. Every human was flawed. It was part of being human. Andrew would argue that if someone was too perfect, that they weren’t human.
Obviously, this didn’t apply to Maxwell. Maxwell was a perfect darling angel. Even if he was a fallen one.
Hearing it from the researchers did really help Andrew though. It was just another puzzle piece that slotted into his new world.
Either way, they obviously weren’t going to force him into anything. It was against what they stood for, and Andrew couldn’t tell them how relieved hearing them say that, several times throughout the day. It was a mantra, but it didn’t feel like a reminder.
More like, we’ll never cross that line.
Andrew knew that Maxwell wouldn’t have told them about his trauma, nor what happened to him, but it was a little eerie to have them nail his concerns on the head so quickly, and so easily.
Richard was a great guide, just like Maxwell. He took Andrew on a tour of the research departments, and also pointed out the areas he should probably avoid. While they were out and about, he did meet the head of the omega department.
Richard hadn’t lied when he had said that the omega research department was their main one, since it took up two whole floors alone, and that didn’t include upstairs where the faces for this department resided.
While they were moving about the first floor in the areas that were safe, Richard noticed that someone was leaving one of the document rooms, and called them over. It was a smaller woman, thin, straight back, with soft, rounded features of Asian descent. Her eyes were slightly upturned, her lips full and her black hair was slicked back in a bun at the base of her neck. She wore the same lab coat that Richard, and now Andrew, wore.
She had been smiling with a slight warmth when she had met Richard’s gaze, before she turned her attention to Andrew, and the smile had dipped slightly.
"Dr. Liu, this is our newest member to our team, Dr. Nice." Andrew had nearly jumped at hearing his fake name from Richard’s lips. He’d been doing such a good job at calling him by his real name that Andrew forgot he had a fake one here.
"Ah. Hello, Dr. Nice. Dr. Gates had been raving about how excited he was to have a new member." Her voice was nice, soft, and Andrew smiled at her.
"I’m sure he was just being polite." Andrew replied and watched as her nostrils flared. She faltered slightly.
"Uh, forgive me for being impolite, but are you...?" She didn’t ask about his secondary sex outright, which was the polite thing to do. Normally, one wouldn’t ever bring it up since it was a rude thing to do, but this wasn’t a normal situation.
They were researchers, in a department for omegas who had several issues. An alpha around here could bring several issues, and Andrew understood that. Most omegas would have gone into this field to help themselves first, and others second.
"I don’t find it impolite, don’t worry. I’ve recently manifested. I’m a true alpha, and I took a little over a month off to get adjusted to my new circumstances. I’m sure you can smell the pheromones marking me, but that’s because I’m still too sensitive. Not an oversensitivity, thankfully, but it was a worry, just an adjustment period." She blinked several times. It was clear that she hadn’t anticipated Andrew being so open and he chuckled. "We’re researchers. I would hate it if my pheromones caused anyone on your staff to have an issue. Please let them know that I’m here, but also let them know that I have a partner, and have no desire to interfere with their work. It would greatly upset my partner if I did." She frowned, but it wasn’t because she was upset.
She looked thoughtful instead.
"I’m sorry, I just...normally alphas tend to get upset when I ask them about this. I know most omegas are a little touchy about it too, but usually they take one look at me and realise that I’m not a threat to them." Andrew would beg to differ. He knew what an omega with power could do.
"Ah. I’ve been getting a lesson in how most alphas behave, especially true alphas since I manifested." Andrew told her with a warm smile. "While I have grown taller, and I now have sharper teeth, I promise I’m not like the others. I was raised by a single, omega Mom. I have no desire to inconvenience anyone working here." Andrew glanced around the hallway conspiratorially. "I’m actually doing one of the pheromone suppressant trials as we speak. Have been for a while." Dr. Liu stared in shock at Andrew before she chuckled.
"Your partner is lucky to have you, Dr. Nice. Were you two together before you manifested?" She asked and Andrew winced.
"Uh, we were friends before I manifested." Andrew could feel the air shift.
"So...they decided to date you after you manifested?" Uh oh. Andrew could see where this was going, especially with the way both Richard and Dr. Liu tensed.
"Uh, well, gosh, I was dating someone else before. You could say...they dumped me because I manifested." Andrew was going to have to tell Maxwell about the update to his story, and tell him how he’d saved him from being accused of dating him just because he was a true alpha.
Richard gasped.
"Oh dear. I’m so sorry to hear that, Dr. Nice. I had no idea that people could be so small minded." He sounded genuinely sincere, and it made Andrew feel awkward. Tracey wouldn’t mind having another bad thing put on her name, right?
"It was particularly bad because we used to work together." Andrew muttered before he sighed, shrugging. "I’m over it now. My partner now is lovely, and had apparently been waiting for us to break up. We were friends before we started dating." Andrew chuckled. "We started as neighbours actually." Richard laughed.
"Wow. That’s surprising. I never would have guessed that you would be neighbours with him." Dr. Liu quickly picked up on the fact that Richard knew Andrew’s partner.
"Wait, you know Dr. Nice’s partner? No, hold on, you two seem too close now that I think about it. Did Dr. Gates get you your position here, Dr. Nice?" She asked, shifting on her feet to stare at the two far taller men. Andrew, who was used to being stared at like that, scratched his cheek.
"Uh, not quite? Um, gosh, I just don’t want you to think I got hired here because I’m not qualified to work here." Andrew muttered and she narrowed her eyes.
"How on earth would I think that? We’ve just met, and you’ve already told me that you must have had a bad breakup if you’ve switched companies. Unless you’re dating Dr. Gates, I’m not going to think that at all." Dr. Liu said confidently, and Richard and Andrew shared a look.
"Um, I’m not dating Dr. Gates." Andrew stared. "I’m dating...Mr. Beckett." Dr. Liu, who had seemed so confident before, paled.
"What?" She replied and Andrew raised his hands in front of his body in a placating gesture.
"He was trying to recruit me before he wanted to date me. He’s told me that many times, since I too was worried that he was just trying to get me to work at his company. But that’s not the case. Uh, so, again, it would really upset my partner if I messed up any of the research you and your people were working on." Andrew told her and Dr. Liu stared at him before she turned a harsh look towards Richard.
"You never thought to lead with that? Or even inform me ahead of time that our CEO was dating someone? That’s going to affect morale in my department, Dr. Gates!" Despite how loud she was, it didn’t appear as if she was upset.
Actually, it seemed like...she was happy?
"I’m sorry?" Richard said and Dr. Liu glared at him before she sighed, brushing a loose strand of hair out of her face.
"Damn it. Have you two done any public events yet?" She asked and Andrew swallowed.
"Uh, we went to his brother’s wedding together?" He offered and she groaned.
"Damn it. I’m already behind. This is why I told him I need more days off." She muttered, more to herself before she pulled out her phone and began to type rapidly. "Oh! I’m not upset that you’re dating our CEO, Dr. Nice. It’s more that I know my team is going to be ecstatic about this development, and I should have already had a party set up and ready for them as soon as I heard the news." Andrew was confused. Why would they be ecstatic about this?
"Is there a particular reason why?" Andrew asked carefully and she smiled.
"Yeah. Mr. Beckett is the idol of most of the omegas working here. He’s powerful, strong, and doesn’t let his sensitivity get the better of him. He has never appeared weak, even when stupid alphas have tried to force him into submission. In public, no less. Instead, he sued them, won, and proved that omegas weren’t weak and alphas couldn’t get away with bad behaviour." She was speaking so candidly that it appeared she’d forgotten she was talking to an alpha.
She froze.
"O-Oh. Of course, I didn’t-"
"I had a feeling it might be something like that." Andrew said, pride radiating from every pore of his body. "Max’s really cool, isn’t he?" Andrew’s eyes turned amber, excitement in every inch of his body as he found out the reason and Dr. Liu stared at him before she grinned.
"I think you’re going to fit in just fine, Dr. Nice."
