Chapter 146: I’m a big, scary man with no children
"They aren’t? So, you’re telling me you don’t have a secret child out there, Andrew?" Amir’s eyes widened at Maxwell’s tone and Andrew turned, nodding. He wasn’t going to lie to Maxwell about this. It would only make him look like more scum than he was for his behaviour back then.
"Of course. I made my stance very clear." Andrew said. "I went with them to get the pill to terminate the pregnancy." He stated and there were several gasps in the room. Maxwell’s expression went lax.
"What?" He said and Andrew nodded. Andrew could feel a shift in the room, and knew that the others were pulling away from him as well.
"I was in no state to be a Father, and honestly, neither was she. She heard that I got a full ride and was trying to use me for the money I didn’t have. It was before I let everyone know I was a beta, not an alpha. It was also not long after my Mom had died, so I was...not nice, to put it politely." Andrew smiled. "We’ve forgiven each other now, I think. She’s married to a wealthy businessman in Germany I think. Has kids too, so clearly it didn’t harm her." Maxwell was shocked.
"I just...wow. I guess I didn’t think you would ever, you know, not be responsible." Maxwell muttered and Andrew laughed.
"What are you saying? I was responsible. It was not right to try to bring a child into the world who was not born from love, especially from either side. It would have been a completely different story if she was trying to get pregnant and had asked permission, but she hadn’t. She was trying to use the child as a way to get into a rich family. That’s awful, and against everything I stand for." Will chuckled.
"Well, I’m glad we know Andrew isn’t going to baby trap Maxwell." it was too fresh of a dig, and Andrew watched as Maxwell went bright red.
Thankfully, not many noticed, and Andrew quickly drew attention back to him. Neither one of them was ready to talk about that part, and they shouldn’t have to.
"Anyway, that’s not why I have so much knowledge about taking care of others. Most of it stems from when my Mom was ill. She was ill for so long that I just guess...it’s a knee-jerk reaction? Add to that I apparently have a rather soothing personality, whenever someone was pregnant in university they would end up spending a lot of time with me. I have quite a few people who consider me the almost midwife of their children." Andrew stated proudly. Mrs. Beckett still seemed a little shocked to hear what she had.
"An almost midwife, huh? Should you become a doula instead, Andy?" Andrew blinked, surprised.
"No. I don’t think-"
"I think it would suit you perfectly. You have such a big, welcoming personality, I think you should consider it. I could see you helping others out in the delivery room." Amir said with a smile and Andrew didn’t know what to say.
His stomach was in knots. Being around that much pregnancy would be...hard. Small doses, like this were fine, but Andrew truly did have an issue with pregnancy. It was...hard for him, and with everything that happened yesterday, he felt a little sore, a little fresh.
"While I appreciate your kind words, I don’t think I should be a doula, or anything that works that closely with babies and children. I’ve never had siblings before, and if I’m honest, I haven’t had a good track record with children." Andrew’s smile was a little tight.
"What do you mean?" Maxwell asked and Andrew sighed. He couldn’t exactly remain quiet when it was Maxwell asking him, could he?
"Well, everything’s fine when the baby is in the womb, but after they come out...." Andrew sighed. "They are scared of me." Andrew mumbled.
"What did you say?" Mr. Beckett asked, while Amir and Ben did their best not to laugh. They were able to hear Andrew clearly, and perfectly understood what he meant.
"Oh Andy, is that the only reason?" Amir asked. It wasn’t, but it was a very good, and very traumatic reason.
He remembered the first time he’d gone to see one of his friends after they had given birth. He’d been so excited, brought them several gifts, for both the parents and the baby. It had been devastating that the child hadn’t stopped crying until he left the room.
"Babies are scared of me." Andrew said a little louder and it was Will’s fiance who snorted, and then covered their mouth.
"Scared of you? Really?" Amir’s grandfather asked in total confusion. "But you’re so nice." Andrew’s face was grim.
"I’m too tall." He said, well aware that he’d grown even taller.
"What? Is that the reason?" Maxwell asked and Andrew met his gaze. Maxwell had a shocked expression on his sallow face, and Andrew couldn’t help but sigh.
"What other reason would there be? I didn’t have pheromones back then." Andrew knew he had to be pouting. "And I like holding babies. They’re soft, small, and all wrinkled and pruney. I like them, but they don’t like me." Andrew sighed. "So, even if I do go through with going back to medical school, I’ll probably just become a gp or something. Everyone needs family Doctors. I don’t need to be anything fancy like a surgeon." Andrew said and Maxwell gave him a soft, pitying look.
"Come here Andy." Maxwell said and Andrew glanced back at Amir, making sure he was okay. Ben took the bowl from him, chuckling.
"I’ve got it. Go on." He encouraged and Andrew slowly shuffled back. Maxwell made Andrew sit down and took both of his hands in his.
"You’re not too tall and you’re not scary." Andrew pouted.
"You rarely see me without my glasses, so you can’t say that." Andrew protested. "I know I look like my father without them, and Mom told me he rarely smiled unless he wanted something." Maxwell’s gaze was soft as he looked up at him.
"Is that why you smile all the time?" He asked and Andrew couldn’t help feeling sensitive and prickly.
"It’s not the full reason, but it certainly plays a role in it." Andrew replied tartly and Maxwell gave his hands a squeeze.
"Is that also why you try to help everyone around you? To seem not as intimidating?" Andrew frowned.
"You already know that, so why are you asking?" Andrew mumbled and Maxwell chuckled.
"Because I don’t care how others perceive you. I’d actually be more relieved if everyone thought you were a stone-faced asshole." Maxwell told him with a grin. "And their kid isn’t going to be afraid of you. There’s no way a Beckett would be scared of a little true alpha, alright?" Maxwell told him and Andrew sighed.
"You don’t know that. The baby is-"
"Not going to be afraid of you, Andy. Did you forget? Your pheromones comforted me, and have continued to comfort me a few times. The baby is going to recognise you from pheromones alone, and unlike with the others, they are going to know you aren’t a scary person." Amir said, and Andrew turned his gaze slowly towards the man who he had helped throw up several times at this point. Amir giggled. "You’re so silly, Andy. Even if I did think you were intimidating in the beginning, there is a reason that omegas feel safe around you. Even as a true alpha now, you’re just...comforting." Ben nodded.
"Maybe the babies were confused and thought that you were their Dad and cried because of that?" Ben offered. "That’s also a valid reason. If you were with their Mom’s the whole time, helping them, even if you aren’t able to tell, maybe you were emitting a low level of pheromones that whole time. Betas do have them, they just aren’t...I guess, ripe is the way I would describe them?" Ben offered. "So that’s also possible. I just can’t see our baby being scared of their Uncle Andy, you know?" Andrew’s heart squeezed.
Uncle Andy? Ugh, that hit him right where it hurt.
"While that’s possible, it’s unlikely." Will stated. "Not to be the party pooper, but most betas wouldn’t emit enough pheromones for a pregnant person to notice. Though studies haven’t been done on babies, for ethical reasons, so I can’t rule that out. I would say perception plays a role into it though. Babies do recognise familiar voices so they might have had a hard time recognising you as the person as you as the voice." Surprisingly, Andrew appreciated Will’s insight into the topic.
"I...thank you for saying that, Will." Andrew told him, and Will seemed surprised by Andrew’s words. He flushed.
"O-Of course, as the only one with a medical degree, I have to speak up when I can." He mumbled, and his fiancé chuckled.
"William doesn’t handle praise well." He said, and it was the first time Andrew had heard them speak. They had a soft accent, something Scandinavian in nature, but it was beautiful. Were they a singer or something?
"I think that’s a family trait." Andrew found himself saying and Maxwell punched his shoulder lightly as Amir, his grandparents, Mrs. Beckett and Will’s fiancé laughed.
"Hey! That’s not true! I handle praise very well." Maxwell protested, and Andrew found that the other male Beckett’s were having a similar conversation with all of their partners. Andrew grinned.
"Oh, yes, of course you do, before you deflect to a different topic." Andrew teased and Maxwell flushed.
"I like to keep the conversation going." He protested and Andrew smiled.
"Hmm? Then would you say that you’re very good at taking praise, Maxy?" Maxwell flushed, his ears pink.
"We weren’t originally talking about if I could take praise, we were talking about why you think babies don’t like you." Maxwell said, trying to change the topic and Andrew chuckled. He felt a little relieved that the topic had changed for his own peace of mind, but that didn’t mean he was going to protest when Maxwell appeared to be this uncomfortable.
"Alright, I’ll drop it for now. But next time, you aren’t getting away, alright, Maxy?" Andrew warned sweetly and Maxwell swallowed.
"I’ll be prepared next time." He declared and Andrew laughed. Prepared? For Andrew to praise him about how good he was at accepting praise? And he was so serious too. Adorable. Just too freaking cute.
