Chapter 144: Wait, you aren’t...gay?
Silence continued for only a few moments before Amir’s grandmother cleared his throat. Andrew, out of curiousity, raised his gaze. Amir’s grandmother met it, his brown gaze muddled with confusion.
"You were dating a woman, Andy?" Amir’s grandmother asked and Andrew blinked. He didn’t know why he was asking this question. He thought that was made pretty clear.
"Uh, yeah. I’ve dated...pretty much anyone." Andrew said and Maxwell froze. Amir’s grandmother seemed surprised.
"Huh. I thought you would have only been interested in men, but I guess I was wrong. I misjudged you." Andrew didn’t know why that was the biggest concern here, but he didn’t question it. He did question if that was an insult or not. Was it a bad thing that he’d dated women?
"Is that a problem?" Andrew asked, genuinely interested and he sighed, shaking his head.
"No no, nothing like that. I just...hmm, I guess it was wrong of me to make an assumption. You...manifested recently, correct?" Andrew nodded in confirmation. "Did all of your partners know you were a beta beforehand?" Andrew nodded again.
"I honestly..." Andrew trailed off, glancing at Maxwell, unsure if he should speak. Maxwell had a grim look on his face, but when he met Andrew’s gaze, he nodded.
"Go on. I’m not going to be mad." Andrew didn’t believe that for a second, but also knew that if he held his tongue, it could be worse. Maxwell didn’t like it when Andrew stopped speaking like this, especially if he was worried it would make Maxwell uncomfortable.
Andrew reached for his napkin, placing it in his lap so he had something to fiddle with as he spoke.
"Well," Andrew began, sighing heavily. "I felt like a pit stop for many people. I wasn’t an alpha, but I looked like one, and I didn’t react to pheromones. I was a good middle ground. You could say...people used me to ’test the waters’." Will nearly spewed his coffee everywhere.
"So you were-" Andrew smiled at him.
"No. I wasn’t when I was going to school here." Andrew told him and Will shut his mouth. Maxwell gave him a curious look.
"When you were in England?" He confirmed and Andrew nodded. Amir’s grandmother frowned.
"So...you don’t have a preference for omegas?" He asked and Andrew chuckled.
"No, I don’t think I do. I won’t lie and say that I haven’t interacted with a lot of them, but again, I think that’s because I was big and tall like your average alpha, but I didn’t have any of the ’bad traits’ that most alphas had." Andrew smiled down at the napkin in his hands. "My Mom made sure of that." He muttered and Amir’s grandfather’s laughter filled the air.
"And I’m sure your father’s behaviour fixed anything else she didn’t beat into your brain." Andrew nodded with a smile at his words.
"Yes, there was also that. I think when I first arrived in England I went out of my way to date alphas, and then later veered more towards betas and omegas after. I think I-" Ben’s eyes glittered as he got ahold of new information. He couldn’t even wait for Andrew to finish speaking.
"Wait. I think I just heard something amazing. Andrew, you have you-"
"Do not cross that line and the lunch table, Benjamin." Maxwell’s Mother cut him off with a harsh warning. Andrew laughed at the way Ben was scolded. Andrew fiddled more with his napkin.
"I don’t think that kind of thing matters, you know? Maybe that’s just my way of thinking because I’ve been a beta for so long, but does it really matter? It feels like even if we give ourselves freedom, we still shoehorn ourselves into preconceived boxes. I’m not a big fan of that. I’ve always been mistaken for an alpha, and now that I am one, it’s just..." Andrew sighed. "Kinda sucks, you know? I’m now what everyone assumes I was going to be. I’m not going to be able to chase off the shitty alphas anymore because I am one." Maxwell snorted.
"You are not a shitty alpha." Maxwell said, and Andrew was excited, thinking Maxwell was going to say something sweet. "You’re a shitty true alpha." He told him, a grin on his face and Andrew’s face fell. "I’m kidding!" Maxwell said after he realised that Andrew was upset. "You’re not that either."
"You aren’t, Andy. Really. I think you don’t understand how much power you now have as a true alpha. You can make all alphas move to your beat, and that’s a great and terrible power. You have a lot of influence, even without your father’s name. Your Mother’s is an equally powerful name, and you can use that however you want." Mrs. Beckett told him. "It was one of the gifts she left behind for you. You should use it." Andrew was moved by her words.
He smiled at her, and she inclined her head, her smile soft. Andrew, unable to speak at the moment from his emotions filling him, reached for his coffee to take a sip.
"Yeah. Before you take our last name, of course." Will offered, and Andrew nearly spewed his coffee everywhere.
"Will is right." Mr. Beckett said. "I don’t know how patient Max is going to be since you still have an apartment in your name. Who knows? He might have already bought the rings." He teased and Andrew felt his face heat.
"I have done nothing of the sort." Maxwell declared, and Andrew’s heart nearly stopped. "Marriage is not just for one person. Plus, Andrew and I have only been officially dating for just over a month, and we’re literally only one day after Ben and Amir have gotten married. Do you remember how long it took to plan this whole thing? It felt like the longest and shortest year and a half of my life. Andrew and I need some time to figure out where we want this relationship to go, and I am not going to have any of you pressuring him." Maxwell glared around the table. "Besides, if he is going to marry me, we should discuss if he even wants to take my last name." Maxwell said and Mrs. Beckett gasped.
"My word! This is incredible. The last time we talked, you wouldn’t even go on a ten minute date with someone who wouldn’t take our last name." Maxwell’s ears were pink as he tore into his bagel.
"Yes, well, this and that are completely different things. Andrew isn’t dating me for my money, and his Mom was a very nice lady. I wouldn’t mind taking-" Maxwell cut off, shoving the bagel into his mouth.
Andrew was sat in shock. Did he really hear what he thought he had?
"You...wouldn’t mind taking my last name?" Andrew asked softly and Maxwell’s blush spread to his cheeks.
"We should discuss this later." He said strongly, loudly, and Andrew nodded, in a trance. This was a great shock to his system. He hadn’t even dreamed of it.
Not because of anything negative. He’d never really had any attachment to his last name. He’d always thought that if he got married, he might take the other party’s last name if they had a strong attachment to it, since he never had. But Maxwell? Maxwell Beckett?
The youngest of the Beckett siblings was potentially considering not only marriage with him, but taking his last name? To honour his Mother?
Damn it, Andrew was going to cry.
Sniffing, Andrew wiped under his eyes. He wasn’t going to cry with so many people around. That would make him look incredibly weak, and he already knew that Maxwell came from a family of sharks. Sure, he’d already cried in front of Mr. Beckett. And pretty much everyone else at the table, but this was different!
"You’re a big cry baby." Maxwell muttered before his fingers were grazing under Andrew’s eyes, wiping away his tears. Andrew sniffed.
"You can’t blame me for this one." Andrew complained and Maxwell sighed.
"Then who is to blame for this one? Hmm? Didn’t you say something once about how you don’t normally cry this much?" Maxwell teased and Andrew frowned. He moved his head away from Maxwell’s touch and Maxwell chuckled. "Stop moving. I’m just helping." He told him and Andrew grumbled.
"You’re to blame. You’re the one always making me cry." Andrew accused. Maxwell smiled at him. Even when his skin was sallow and he looked like death, he was still attractive and sexy. Damn pretty privilege.
"Yeah yeah. If I’m to blame, does that mean you’re going to let me take responsibility? Are you going to move in with me officially, Andy?" Andrew froze as Maxwell stared up at him, his blue gaze teasing. Andrew felt his lips tremble. He wasn’t trying to dance around it, and instead asked him outright.
Andrew was a goner now.
"Now you ask? After we’ve been living together for a full month? You monster." Andrew sniffed, unable to stop the tears now and Maxwell grabbed his cloth napkin and began to dab at Andrew’s eyes.
"I know. I really was taking advantage of you. I’m sorry about that. Are you going to forgive me and let me take care of you?" Maxwell asked and Andrew sniffed. He couldn’t speak past the lump in his throat, and with tears running down his face, he nodded.
Maxwell’s grin in response was megawatt bright, and the man who didn’t like pda leaned in, pressing a kiss against his lips.
"Good. I wasn’t going to accept it if you said no anyways."
