Chapter 136: We’re having fun
Chapter 136: We’re having fun
"Well? Do you two have an announcement to make?" Andrew and Maxwell froze when Amir’s grandmother asked that question. It was clear what he was looking for, and from the eager look on everyone else’s face, they were all making an assumption as well.
Even Ben and Amir, who were sitting in the VIP section as they approached, seemed interested. Amir’s eyes were glowing, and Andrew felt a little bit bad.
"We aren’t pregnant." Andrew told them, and they all made disappointed noises. "It’s far too soon for us to even think about that. Plus, I don’t have a job right now, and Maxwell’s busy with his career. I don’t want to put any more strain on him than I already am." Andrew said the words calmly, while Maxwell stared up at him. Andrew gave his hand a squeeze.
"Andrew, you are not-"
"Hush. I’m talking in the way you’re thinking." Maxwell’s ears turned pink and Mr. Beckett choked on the whiskey he was drinking. Maxwell’s expression shifted, and it was clear he was embarrassed.
"You are not saying what I think you’re saying right now, are you?" Maxwell whispered, but Andrew knew that most of the people near them could hear them. Andrew smiled, gently reaching for Maxwell’s face and cupping his cheek.
"You yourself said that I’ve only gotten bigger. I just worry about your health. Is that so wrong? I’m sorry I panicked. I was just so concerned for you." Maxwell, seeming to understand exactly what Andrew was doing, reached up and grabbed both of the cheeks on his face, pinching them. "Ow!" Andrew protested and Maxwell’s whole face turned red.
"This is worse. This is so much worse! Shut your damn mouth, Andrew Knox, or I swear-"
"Wait, are you covered in Andrew’s pheromones, Maxy?" Kim asked, her eyes widening. "Wait, Andy, are you able to control your pheromones enough to do that?" Kim knew she was interrupting the couple, but this was big news. Andrew stared at her blankly, before he nodded and Kim felt her eyes water.
"Max needed it. Michael said so. We’ve been working on it, but I haven’t actually done it until today." Andrew told her and Kim rushed the two of them giving them a tight hug.
"This is such good news!" Kim said, laughing and even Maxwell seemed confused.
"K-Kim, this is-"
"She’s just excited because it means that Andy isn’t one of the super sensitive true alphas. He’s going to be able to go out in public. This level of control is very important for all alphas, but for true alphas? Being able wrap another in pheromones is one of the first goal posts placed by the families to prove you have pheromone control." Andrew, who hadn’t been informed that that was the reason he was working so hard on it, blinked. Maxwell, who realised at this moment that he didn’t have to worry about Andrew collapsing anymore, felt his eyes water.
Andrew immediately panicked, along with every other member of the Becketts.
"Max?!" They called, getting to their feet.
Kim shoved Maxwell into Andrew’s arms, and Andrew wrapped his arms around the smaller man, picking him up and shuffling them into the VIP section, hiding him from the regular folk. Maxwell tucked himself against Andrew’s body, his shoulders shaking.
"These are happy tears?" Andrew asked softly, holding him carefully and Maxwell gave a small head nod. The others relaxed, but still seemed surprised. Kim and Jenny weren’t in much better shape, honestly.
Both of them had watery eyes, and Kim was sniffing while Jenny dabbed at her eyes, trying not to mess up her makeup.
"It means you are safe, Andy. You won’t need to take the pills that your Doctor was giving you." Kim’s voice cracked and she took a moment to compose herself.
Maxwell raised his head, his eyes water and he sniffed.
"You aren’t going to be sensitive like me." He whispered, and Andrew crumbled. He pulled Maxwell closer, his arm around his waist as he cupped Maxwell’s head.
"Oh Angel, were you worried about that this whole time?" Andrew asked. Maxwell nodded and Andrew sighed. "You are so sweet." Andrew told him, holding the man against him. Damn it, he meant so much to him.
Maxwell only let him hold him like that for a few more moments, and Andrew wouldn’t lie and say that he didn’t feel Maxwell pulling away from his hold as a loss. Maxwell’s eyes were slightly red, the blue in stark contrast as he wiped at his eyes with the back of his hand. Andrew held him, watching the other man with soft, warm eyes.
"W-Well, now we have another reason to party. Andrew is on the right track!" Maxwell declared and everyone around them cheered. Andrew glanced around at people who he had gotten to meet, old and new, and felt a warmth settle into his heart.
Who knew that this would all stem from one casserole?
~
Maxwell wasn’t joking when he said it was now time to party. He was going all out. Andrew only knew Maxwell as a whiskey and scotch drinker, and the occasional wine drinker. But he knew that Maxwell preferred drinks that he could sip slowly and enjoy in good company.
This Maxwell? This was a foreign creature to not just Andrew, but his whole family and everyone around them.
This Maxwell ordered a tray of shots. And to make sure that Amir wasn’t left out, ordered him a cranberry juice shot.
Several times.
At some point, a DJ arrived and the area was cleared for a dance floor. The lights dimmed, the people around them took off layers of their outfits, and the party really took off.
Andrew knew next to nothing when it came to music, but apparently the DJ was a big name. Ben bragged about it to Andrew god knows how many times as more alcohol started flowing freely, and the atmosphere of the party changed.
At some point, Amir’s grandparents left the youngsters to their fun. They gave Andrew a big hug, squeezing him to near death before patting him on the cheek and telling him to keep an eye out for Maxwell and Amir.
Amir Andrew had no worries about. He wasn’t drinking, and he was having a great time. He was laughing, dancing, drinking fruity non alcoholic drinks that a trusted server was in charge of bringing him. Everyone who didn’t know would think he was drinking alcohol, while Ben wasn’t being given much of a choice.
Maxwell was forcing Ben and Will into taking shots with him. It was like the man was on a mission to prove to everyone, including himself, that he wasn’t pregnant. Andrew would have laughed if he wasn’t so worried about him.
It didn’t help that he felt like he was the only one looking out for the smaller man. His parents were off having a moment to themselves with some of their friends around their age, Maxwell was roping his brothers into his bad behaviour, and Amir was too busy making out with Ben when he wasn’t with Maxwell to pay attention.
Andrew was doing his best, but even Kim and Jenny, who he knew were still around, would only swing by, egg him on, and then leave again in a storm of laughter and perfume. Andrew was at a loss for words at what he should do. He’d never seen Maxwell like this before.
Clearly, no one else had either, since they were letting him have free rein. He was dancing, laughing, bringing Amir onto the dance floor and dancing with him too. He was like the party fairy, his suit jacket off, his vest glittering in the lights of the dance floor, his blue eyes bright, his pupils wide and his smile even wider.
Andrew could just imagine what kind of devastation he could have done if he was single. He also wasn’t blind to the way some of the others were looking at him. Maxwell was hot. Incredibly so. He was even more hot as he laughed, danced, and had a good time.
The quiet, calculating Maxwell was sexy, but this Maxwell? Irresistible.
There was a point when a huge commotion was started over by the bar. It was because of Maxwell, of course, but Andrew kept an eye on the scene.
Then, he saw a circle clear and whooping and hollering went up around the whole area. Amir was standing over Ben who was on his knees as Amir, flushed, fed him a shot. It was slow, seductive, and Andrew grinned. He was happy for them. Truly. They seemed like a good match.
"Andy." A siren song. He couldn’t believe that he heard his voice over the loud, pulsing music, but there was also a part of him that knew he’d always be able to.
Jerking his head away from the happy married couple, Andrew nearly swallowed his tongue when he saw Maxwell holding a shot in his hand, motioning with one finger for Andrew to come over. The slight curve to his lips, the way his eyes glittered in the lights even from this distance warned Andrew that he should probably stay away.
Andrew slammed back his drink and placed it on a table, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand as he made his way towards the smaller man.
He’d remained on the outskirts of the party, not wanting to intimidate anyone with his newfound height. He’d always been like this, even when he was smaller and younger. He knew what vibe he gave off, and he wasn’t feeling particularly smiley at the moment. As soon as Maxwell began drinking like this, Andrew had slowed down to a near halt.
Every instinct in his body told him that Maxwell was far more important, and he stepped into the role of a body guard with ease. Maxwell wasn’t his only charge for the night, but he was his most important one. He took a shot when it was offered to him, but that was it. Andrew wasn’t going to let anyone harm Maxwell, or any of the Becketts, but Maxwell in particular.
Especially since he’d never seen him so free.
