Chapter 134: Something’s not quite right

Chapter 134: Something’s not quite right

Maxwell was a sputtering, flustered mess as Andrew continued to carry him as Michael led the way through the crowd. Andrew knew that everyone was staring at him, but Andrew didn’t care.

He’d held out for a while, but now it was time for Maxwell to get some help.

"Andrew! At the very least, put me down!" Maxwell hissed and Andrew gave Maxwell a slow, raised eyebrow look that had Maxwell flushing.

"No, Mr. Beckett. I believe you are going to get someone to stop us, and if I’m carrying you, you can’t do that. Just sit tight and wait till we get somewhere quiet. Then, you can yell at me." Andrew told him and Maxwell harrumphed and sat back in his arms, his own arms crossed. Michael glanced back at them, but held his tongue.

Andrew knew he was being unreasonable, but he honestly couldn’t care less. Maxwell came first. No matter what. He also didn’t think he was going to rest properly, or even relax if Maxwell didn’t get checked.

He was spooked from the behaviour he had shown. He’d never seen him like that before, and Michael was the only person he knew who could give him some answers right now.

They passed by the Becketts, Kim and Jenny, and Amir’s grandparents again and all of them were still staring. Maxwell reached up, covering his face.

"I am never going to be able to show my face here again." He muttered and Andrew chuckled.

"I doubt that. If anything, I’m never going to be able to show my face. ’Was that the guy who carried the youngest Beckett around in his arms? Get him!’" Andrew raised his voice into a falsetto and Maxwell uncovered his eyes, glaring at him.

"Don’t you dare. They all know me. They don’t know you." Maxwell said, his eyes narrowing. "You’ll get off with this act scott free. I won’t. I can already feel the messages my parents are going to send me. Never mind what Ben or Will are going to say." He grumbled and Andrew gave a soft chuckle.

"Don’t worry Mr. Beckett. It won’t be much longer and Andy can put you down on your own feet." Michael said as they entered into a hallway. Maxwell groaned.

"Any of the rooms along this wall, as long as they aren’t occupied, should be okay." He was clearly upset with Andrew, but Andrew didn’t put him down. Not until Michael had found them a room, they had entered, and the door was closed behind them. Then, and only then, did Andrew put Maxwell down.

Maxwell turned and smacked Andrew’s chest as soon as he was on his own feet. Andrew winced, but took the several light hits as his due.

"Andrew! Do you know how embarrassing all of that was?" Maxwell demanded and Andrew remained firm.

"And I told you that if I had put you down you would have found some way to run away. I needed to get to Michael, and I needed to get us somewhere where he could see to you. Now, are you going to tell him what happened, or am I? Because we aren’t leaving here until we talk about it." Maxwell paled at Andrew’s words.

"Y-You want to talk about-" Andrew was stunned that his normally smart, competent, wonderful boyfriend’s mind had wandered in the wrong direction.

"Max." Andrew interrupted him. "I’m talking about after that." Andrew told him and Maxwell’s ears turned pink. Andrew glanced at Michael, he was off to the side in a white tux. He had placed his leather case down on the small, circular table in the room and was opening it.

Andrew noticed that inside were quite a few vials of things, as well as bandages and other essentials. Michael turned towards them as Maxwell grappled with his own embarrassment.

"I just don’t think this is-"

"I am going to be very mad if you finish that sentence." Andrew warned the smaller man. "You don’t let me neglect my body, and freak out when something small changes with me. I don’t like how you are reacting when the shoe is on the other foot." Andrew could feel that he was getting worked up, and Michael’s cough was proof of it.

"I take it that this is something big?" He asked, and when Andrew glanced at Maxwell, he realised he’d closed his lips. Andrew sighed. He was going to have to speak about it.

"Maxwell blacked out." Andrew started. "I would say for about 10-15 minutes. I didn’t time it. During that time he went completely non-verbal, wouldn’t respond to his name or anything else, and went about in a robotic way. Before that, we were having a rather intense conversation, and Maxwell had been a little off before that. He’d gotten distracted taking us to our room to get ready in, and there were a few other things. I’m worried. That’s never happened before." Andrew told Michael and he nodded.

Michael approached Maxwell holding a small pen light.

"Alright. Bear with me Mr. Beckett, I’m just going to run you through a few tests." Michael said with a slight smile on his lips and Maxwell stiffened. He had Maxwell sit down in a chair while Michael ran him through a few tests, just simple ones, and Andrew stood by anxiously.

He got concerned every time Michael would jot something down in his book.

It was only a few moments, but Andrew was tapping his foot anxiously as Michael stepped away from Maxwell, humming thoughtfully.

"Well, I don’t think it’s anything of great concern for the moment, but I am going to suggest you go to an omega specialist, Mr. Beckett." Maxwell crossed his arms, looking like a proud prince in his clothes.

"Why is that?" He demanded and Michael chuckled.

"Because your pheromone levels are abnormal, your eyes are dilated, and from what Andy said, I’m worried that there is something going on with your secondary sex. As I am not an expert in that field, I can only give you basic information. I do have some pills that we could use, but you shouldn’t take them since they won’t agree with you." Michael closed his book and smiled at him. "Now, I have a few questions for you." Maxwell eyed him wearily and Michael chuckled. "Nothing hard, I promise." Andrew watched their exchange anxiously.

"Is he okay though?" Andrew asked and Michael turned and winked at him.

"He should be fine. I just want to make sure I have the whole picture." Michael’s voice was comforting, and Andrew felt a shiver run up his spine.

He was using his Doctor voice on him. That told him that Andrew was on edge, and Andrew closed his eyes, taking a few deep, calming breaths as he began to ask his questions.

"Now, Mr. Beckett, do you remember the incidents that Andy was talking about?" Maxwell waved a dismissive hand.

"So I got a little distracted while going to the room I’d had the maids make up for us? It happens to everyone."

"You aren’t everyone, Max." Andrew cut in and Michael gave him a hard look.

"Andy. Shut it. Mr. Beckett is talking." Andrew pouted, crossing his arms but remained silent. Maxwell stared at him, glanced at Michael, and then chuckled lightly.

"Wow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen you like this. You weren’t even like this when I was just getting out of my heat." Maxwell said and Andrew pouted more. Michael chuckled.

"I think these two times can’t be compared. Andrew had alpha pheromones, along with your heat pheromones wrapping around him at that time. I can tell you aren’t in heat right now, but Andrew’s alpha pheromones are riding him rather hard. It’s a bit like his pheromones don’t have anywhere to go." Michael explained kindly and Maxwell smirked.

"So he’s just a protective guard dog?" Maxwell was clearly looking to tease him but Andrew’s gaze was serious when he turned towards him.

"Yes, I am, and if you don’t watch it, we’re not going to see the end of the festivities with everyone else." Andrew warned. Michael coughed.

"Stop flirting. I’m trying to be serious here." Michael told the two and Andrew sealed his lips while Maxwell laughed.

"I wasn’t flirting." Andrew mumbled and Maxwell chuckled. Michael shook his head with a sigh.

"Do you remember what distracted you enough to cause you to pass where you intended to go? You don’t have to tell me the details." Michael asked and Maxwell’s cheeks turned pink. He skipped his ears entirely.

"Uh, what Andrew and I were going to discuss." Maxwell muttered and Andrew shifted. So he got distracted thinking about the baby trap?

"Was it sexual? Or did it invoke intense emotions in you?" Michael asked and Maxwell gave a jerk of his head as an answer. Michael hummed thoughtfully again. "Okay, so it was something that provoked an intense emotion. Do you remember if you felt more or less comfortable around Andrew during this time?" Michael asked and Maxwell frowned.

"I...I don’t remember, sorry." Michael smiled.

"It’s alright. Did you finish this conversation or did you black out before it finished?" Maxwell’s expression went blank and Andrew itched to answer for him. He knew better when Michael shot him a dirty look.

"I don’t remember that either." Maxwell said and Michael smiled.

"Do you remember if you could smell Andrew?" Maxwell shook his head at Michael’s question and Michael sighed. "Well, I’m glad I asked. You said it was about 10-15 minutes, Andrew?" Michael turned to him and Andrew gave a quick nod. He was still tapping his foot.

"Is that worrying?" He asked and Michael chuckled.

"Well, taking into consideration that Mr. Beckett had what I would consider a ’normal’ heat for the first time recently, these events might be connected. So many pheromones, whether conscious or unconsciously released in such a large gathering could be affecting him. Honestly, in a similar fashion that we worried that they would affect you. I can’t say for certain, but I think coating him in your pheromones might be the best bet. Have you figured out how to do that properly since our lessons?" Andrew frowned at Michael’s words, and when Maxwell gave him a confused look Michael laughed. "You didn’t even bring it up to him?"

"Bring what up to me?" Maxwell asked and Andrew groaned.

"Michael wanted me to practise controlling my pheromones by wrapping you in them like a present. You were busy, so I didn’t want to bother you." Maxwell’s expression fell into a glower and Andrew winced.

"You dare say you didn’t want to bother me after causing a scene like that? Are you fucking kidding me?" Andrew winced as the smaller man got to his feet and grabbed Andrew by the tie, yanking him down until their noses were touching. "You are infuriating, do you know that? Fine. Do it. Wrap me up like a present. If you do a bad job, I’m still going to walk out there, so you better not embarrass me more." Andrew glanced at Michael, but he wouldn’t meet his gaze.

Andrew shifted nervously, now faced with the full force of Maxwell’s anger. Maxwell had never been this angry at him before, and honestly, Andrew had kind of expected it. He just didn’t think it would be because of this.

"Max, I-"

"Don’t try to Max your way out of this. You got so mad at me for ignoring myself, but I can’t do the same? Don’t be a hypocrite, Andrew." Andrew closed his eyes and groaned. He was in trouble all right.
