Chapter 95: XCV. Boss’s Ambition
Shadi’s hobbies were extremely limited and quite common, basically nothing more than those things and alcohol.
However, Shadi was incredibly handsome, which led to many throwing themselves at him. Even the lord’s daughter from the neighboring island knew of the explosively attractive pirate and had openly expressed her willingness to snatch him up.
In theory, Shadi would have been all for it, if not for the fact that the lord’s daughter was far from flattering, only slightly lighter than Wolman.
Shadi adhered to the spirit of serving the public, with too many entangled beautiful women on the island, and Brother Cheng, commonly referred to as Little Shadi.
Occasionally, his girlfriends would even cause bloody incidents. Women fighting can be terrifying.
But Shadi had no choice, with great power came great responsibility. With such good conditions, it would be a waste not to use them. He believed that one must not concern themselves with politics if they don’t occupy a political position; if one has good looks, then they should help the world, or else they would be letting down the lonely women of this world.
At this moment, Shadi was quite drunk, strolling on the rammed-earth road outside the city.
Life returning to the island was just that simple and unadorned.
He entered an inn run by a kept woman.
Not everyone in Heaven Port was a pirate or fugitive, for if that were the case, running an inn would be a dead-end business, and how many merchants with the guts for such trade could there be?
There were still many transient populations here, serving as the pillar of the tourism industry.
The local inn business was entirely sustained by the most chaotic of professions.
There was something in this world known as adventurers.
Adventurer quality varied widely, falling into two categories. The first type was the pure swindler, the fellows who carried a broken sword, idled about, and picked up opportunities—quite the legendary old guns.
A few bottles of booze, a couple of punches, and the old gun would even practice military boxing. Leave a contact, a tip out of consideration, whether a lot or a little, it was all fate.
Show off a scar, eat jail food, indulge in smoking, drinking, whoring, gambling—they’ve done it all. Jump from the fifth floor, not die from the fall, broke and nerveless yet feeling blissful.
In short, lower-level adventurers were always filled with all sorts of characters: the gambling old guns, the lazy filial sons, and the ones who peddled Ye Zi—everything included.
The second type.
Now they had some substance, truly embodying the spirit of adventure, worthy of being called adventurers.
Even in a place like Heaven Port, there were adventurers settling down, as less than one-fifth of the East Sea Domain had been explored, and the shipping routes were established at the cost of generations of lives.
A large number of unknown regions were rumored to hold many unexcavated treasures; it wouldn’t be surprising to find another continent.
But those with such grand plans and big ideas were few.
Most were after the Magic Beasts dwelling in this sea domain.
The most valuable Magic Materials were those hauled up from the sea, a tremendous challenge.
A sea beast called the Spotted Scale Giant Whale was valuable from head to tail; slaughtering and hauling up just one could provide for an adventure group for years.
Adventurers daring enough to come to Heaven Port to sell their bounty were all tough characters. Starting from Gold-level Adventure Groups, they could afford the local expenses and weren’t afraid of pirates who didn’t watch their step and tried to rob them.
And the Boss of Heaven Port was a person of great vision, deeply aware of the pros and cons, of killing the goose that laid the golden eggs—how to develop sustainability?
Thus, he laid down the word, outside adventurers coming here to trade with their lives were under his protection, with no fees charged.
It seemed like there were no fees, but those who became pirates out of desperation, unable to earn money, provided a source of fresh blood.
"Besides, when you work here, aren’t all your expenses covered by yourself? It may seem like all the business on the island has nothing to do with Boss, but at the fundamental level, everything has passed through his hands."
"How do pirates make money? They sell stolen goods to the Big Three, skimming off the top. How do gangs make money? They collect protection money, then grow more powerful, buy a big ship, and continue their piracy, selling loot to the Big Three. Where do all the restaurants and bars on the island get their ingredients? Wholesale, from their own supply. There’s no bigger supplier. Everyone else is either too scared or too broke to compete, thus dominating Heaven Port and becoming the Boss."
"More often than not, what really allows one to rise to power isn’t tangible expenses—it’s intangible ones."
"That’s called professionalism."
"So, the current ecosystem of Heaven Port is still decent, almost like a small nation, with adventurers and pirates keeping to their own, conflicts rare."
"Because the pirates know very well that adventurers who dare to kill Magic Beasts for big money are tough, honest people."
"Tough, honest people can be ruthless when they’re desperate. Best to steer clear of them."
"And one of Shadi’s girlfriends runs an inn in the outer city, catering especially to adventurers."
"These adventurers are meticulous and frugal, very economical, and won’t spend money in the Inner City."
"As her business got better and better, she thought that if Boss decided to start his own country now, there might actually be people willing to invest, reaching the zenith of success."
"When she saw Shadi stumble in, drunk as a lord, her heart ached for him. She hurriedly had a clerk take over the counter and went to support Shadi."
"Why did you drink so much? I’ve told you to stop being a pirate. I can take care of you."
"The female boss used to be an adventurer herself and had hunted sea beasts at Heaven Port before. Discovering the unique potential of the location, she ’retired’ to land, and with her own strength and a few friends, she didn’t need anyone’s protection."
"Sigh, I just came to stroll around and see you. Alright, I’m leaving."
"Shadi, a complete street urchin and bored out of his mind without anything to do, was about to leave after seeing there was nothing of interest here and move on to the next spot."
"You dare! If you leave, I’ll die just to show you!"
"The female boss was head over heels in love with Shadi."
"In reality, Shadi was hardly hurting for a living—the cabal of girlfriends on the island could keep him very well, and in extreme luxury. But that was too boring for him; he still wanted to go back to Summer Sunset Island and pull off something big."
"Summer Sunset Island is a major dwelling for Dark Elves, also a place of origin."
"Though they were Elves just like the High Elves, their status couldn’t be more different."
"Legend has it that due to the wars in the Ancient Era, a group of High Elves were displaced from their homeland, evolving into two branches: the Wood Elves, who resided deep in the forests, and the Dark Elves, who landed on Summer Sunset Island."
"But the Dark Elves had the lowest status, for being isolated on an island, they slowly became suspicious, aggressive, and cold-blooded, known also as ’Zor’ or ’Danmo,’ with a far from stellar reputation."
"Today’s Empress of Summer Sunset Island is even a war maniac with an aggressive nature, gradually about to replace the notoriety once held by the Wetland Half-Dragons as the most infamous race."
"Supported by the wheat-skinned, sexy female boss to a seat, she patted his back with a look of concern."
"A few adventurers drinking in the hall who saw this scene couldn’t believe their eyes—so real? This guy was truly handsome, making them lose hope in a world that only judged by one’s face."
"This boozy pirate had no personal charisma to speak of, yet flipped his situation entirely around with just his looks. A second chance, and still pointless."
"I’m just making rounds. Did anyone ask you for protection money?"
"Shadi was considered an Old Cannon here. Black Sail was involved in the same kind of business, but Liszt preferred to call it a service fee."
"While some underlings didn’t dare to extort protection money from girlfriends, Heaven Port was now home to several wildly arrogant Pirate Gangs, second only to the supreme and powerful. They are notorious, uncontrollable gangs, kings in their own turf."
"The female boss bit her lip—he had asked about her, he cared about her, she was in his heart.
