Chapter 44: XLIV. Murderous Intentions Everywhere
Zahak frowned deeply, not believing in any guidance but suspecting Marcus was playing tricks, as all high-ranking members of the Sect were proficient in Magic Techniques, and Marcus was no weaker than any.
Seeing Marcus still so stubborn, Zahak knew he couldn’t really kill him, but it was indeed a perfect situation, and Zahak sighed in relief.
"Since you are obsessed with guidance, so be it, I will take people to complete all the remaining search work. If the guidance proves wrong, Marcus, it won’t be a good report for you when you return."
Zahak spoke no more and left with the Yisu Girl.
Despite being blind, Marcus could still sense the direction of the bloodied hand; though he appeared expressionless, his heart was actually a turmoil of shock waves because... the Dragon Lord had truly manifested.
He turned his head towards where the Black Sail Pirate Group’s secret port was located.
The Constitutional Guard continued their way back to Londen City.
The sound of horse hooves filled the air as they walked at a slower pace; after all, they were still animals and couldn’t maintain a sprint indefinitely.
"I so wish I could sit on a train that will soon be available for passengers. It’s just too bad we can’t go back. To be forced into being pirates, to be violated by a whole ship of people... it’s too bitter."
The Yisu Girl was extremely tense, sensing trouble brewing on the Priest’s side.
"You really needn’t worry anymore. The Commander has treated me well, knowing well that if this mission fails, our ranks are surely compromised. That’s why he involved the Church Court, to share the responsibility. Luckily Marcus is playing his tricks, which gives us something to blame him on. If this mission fails, we can still return to Aran. Although our future may be dim and we’re sure to be demoted to maintain order, we will still have salaries for survival. By then, the Commander will report to the Emperor that the so-called Dragon Lord is unreliable, which also endangers the affairs of Aran Country and could cause trouble for the Church Court, settling our accounts with them."
Zahak made his judgment.
"Finally, we won’t be exploited repeatedly..."
The Yisu Girl felt a weight lift off her chest; East Shore was so vast, even if a net was cast across the sky and the ground, there would still be slip-ups.
"Pull yourself together. I’m not saying this to make you give up. If you are demoted again, you’ll be the lowest rank of the Constitutional Soldiers. Do you want to live like that for life? Though saying this, we can only succeed, not fail."
Zahak felt he had been too harsh in his words yesterday, scaring the girl senseless, which wouldn’t help matters. He wanted her to calm down, not to give up completely.
The reason the Commander cultivated him was also for his own purposes, having a confidant in the Imperial Guard allowed the full deployment of various methods.
Moreover, he couldn’t afford to fail, to stop here.
"Settle accounts with the Church Court? To establish another belief as the state religion?"
The Yisu Girl asked blankly.
Zahak was utterly speechless. This was no longer about whether or not she could mix in politics, but about being completely devoid of common sense; such a mentality should not embark on a political path.
"The Eternal Sect, rooted for thousands of years, has seen Aran split and reorganize countless times and yet remains strong. It’s impossible for our generation to eliminate its influence. At the very least, we need to replace the Pope with a normal person, someone from the Emperor’s side, not a true charlatan."
Zahak said calmly, the terror of religious power lying in that sometimes their leaders didn’t care for power or money, which would have been great, but unfortunately, they were often completely uncontrollable, merely pure servants to a non-existent presence, madmen.
"No news from the other side yet. We must hold tight to the coast, that’s the task for these two days. Cast away your careless demeanor; it’s not as simple as just apprehending people. There definitely are people ready to meet on the other side, with killing intent all around, and in this foreign land, it could also be where we meet our end."
Zahak said coldly.
The Yisu Girl swallowed hard, being an official in Aran was terrifying.
On the other side of East Shore.
Xunyi Town.
Beside the lake, a small villa.
Claude and Liszt were fishing by the lake.
Claude had still not completely cut off his past, as he had yet to personally kill an Aran.
However, having made the decision to become a pirate, he unexpectedly relaxed, as if he had gained some kind of release.
It seemed that from now on he would no longer have to watch his words and actions.
Liszt was about to lose it, Claude kept venting about how difficult it was to maneuver in the court and how he was mistreated at the Church Court. He certainly didn’t want to listen to a greasy middle-aged man complaining; if he kept going, Liszt would have to start charging for psychological counseling.
"Quit your rambling, who cares about the Emperor and the Pope, absolute nonsense. You see me bothering with them? I became a pirate and stopped thinking about the past, every dragon. If they have the guts, let them come down from the sky and mess with me. One, two, three, they wouldn’t dare, would they? Dare to come to the East Shore, I’d snatch their hoods right off, absolutely smack them in the face, the ’Eternal Master of Time’, it’s just the singer, huh?"
Liszt disdainfully puffed on his cigarette.
Claude was somewhat shocked by such a statement, scandalous, if it were in Aran, believers would stone him to death in the street.
"This damn place is remote, say what you want, do what you want. You could even streak here and no one would care." Liszt looked at Claude, who had caught a few fish while he still had none, somewhat annoyed, "Dammit."
Liszt stood up, gathered his fishing rod, and broke it in half over his knee, giving up fishing.
Claude’s men were all militarily trained veterans who had survived several battles and had ample experience. To get from the inland to Lavender Town, they must take a northwest route, which had already formed a search line—no need for Goria and the others to come here to know they had arrived.
"What is Heaven Port like?"
Claude couldn’t help but ask, having heard from Liszt that once they were done here, they would stay there for a while.
Shadi laughed and said, "The Cosmic Center, the supreme port of the universe, Heaven Port, it’s called Heaven, surely a auspicious place."
Liszt, who was drinking water, almost choked, ’The Cosmic Center’ might not be too far-fetched, but ’auspicious’ was definitely not.
"Earl told us to be there by the tenth day, it’s nearly time, any news yet?"
Liszt and the others had been there for two nights, unable to sleep securely, it was exhausting. If the others died midway, and they foolishly waited, wouldn’t it be a waste of time?
But if they were dead, it wouldn’t be a bad deal, a free 1,200 Golden Dragons, they just didn’t know how long it would take to transition.
"What if they don’t show up at all?"
Swan was quite cautious, as the Black Sail had more than just this job now. The Thief Guild was already watching, and if they stayed longer, the Guild would send not scouts but experts in political assassination, just as strong, if not stronger than themselves.
"Don’t worry, tomorrow is only the tenth day, let’s wait another two days. If they haven’t shown up by the night after tomorrow, we’ll stop waiting."
Liszt had to take care of the morale of the entire ship’s backbone, even cautious folks like Ox and Fen couldn’t wait that long.
Claude’s brow furrowed, then quickly smoothed out, his mood incredibly complicated, unsure whether he wanted them to come or to die on the way.
Perhaps it was to cut off the violent anxiety in Claude’s heart.
Just then, a horse galloped out of the woods, belonging to one of Claude’s men.
"They’re here!"
The man urgently reined in his horse and reported not as they had imagined. Three people moved covertly to arrive together, there had been a major problem.
"Where are they?"
Liszt asked, everyone by the lake tensed up.
