Chapter 124: CXXIV. Demonic Mentality
The time had come to evening.
In the cellar of the Black Sail Inn aside from storing wine, there was another utilitarian space in the side room.
In the chilly reserve wine cellar, Old Wei kept everything in the inn very well maintained and clean, this side room only held empty wine racks, but it was spotless.
Mika worked his magic.
After pulling Ben back from the brink of death, he carefully examined his injuries and discovered that this guy was a thief on the level of Superman.
A vicious sword had slashed across his chest. The stitching wasn’t exquisite; perhaps he had sewn it himself. During the daytime battle, the wound had completely burst open and bled profusely.
This guy, bearing such injuries, managed to fly around in the Inner City, lightly injuring Shadi and Swan, and even exchanged a few moves in front of the invincible Brother Sha – truly superhuman.
Fortunately, the handoff happened during the day, or else letting this guy sneak in at night with his thief skills could have easily led to the annihilation of the entire group.
The reason Ben wasn’t killed was that there were questions to be asked.
After Mika treated all the wounds, he tied him securely to a chair with a belt.
Rein fetched a bucket of water and poured it over the weakened Ben to wake him up.
Ben opened his eyes, the bone-chilling cold somewhat restored his consciousness, but he was exceedingly weak. It took him more than ten seconds for his vision to gradually clear.
Instinctively, he tried to get up, but his limbs were tightly bound by the belts, and he couldn’t move at all.
He was already trapped within a pirate den with no way to turn the situation around.
"Your current life expectancy is one hour. Now begins the Heaven Port Million Questions quiz! Answer the first question correctly to earn an hour of life, and so on, complete the challenge, and you’ll win the ultimate prize! Are you ready?"
Rein picked up a dagger handle and started tapping the table, beginning the show.
"Uh?"
Ben uttered one weak, inexplicable word.
"In the bestseller ’Ranger Gordan,’ how many wives does the protagonist have? Please answer within ten seconds, you can choose to call a friend for help, or ask the audience, but you only have two chances."
Rein said seriously.
Ben looked utterly bewildered. Who the hell would know the answer to that kind of question?
"Six."
Mika answered, noting that the gender descriptions inside were quite moving.
"Who asked you?"
Rein was dumbfounded.
Meanwhile, in another room upstairs.
Liszt wanted Caroso to work for him, but Madmen were not very sensible. Talking money didn’t work, nor did talking feelings, as Caroso’s connection with the Holy Spirit was much stronger.
Thus, Liszt had no choice but to use his sincerity as a kill move and laid all his cards on the table.
"This is a misunderstanding, I can assert that he is a member of the Thief Guild. We possess something similar, which is terrifyingly valuable; you must know, my left hand hosts the Evil Curse Device called the Junlin Sword, and this thing is only stronger, not weaker."
At a small desk, Liszt and Caroso sat facing each other.
The handover person was already arranged, Heaven Port was far from the mainland, cut off from news, and the matters concerning Fafna couldn’t possibly be settled at once. There were enemies still following up, but that too would be delayed for a long time, not until after the New Year at least.
Caroso pondered the deeper meaning in Liszt’s words; there was a problem with the handover, which meant his own mission had not yet ended, making him highly vigilant.
"You can go down and ask him later, it must have been him who intercepted the handover person, then pretended to come over. Actually, I already know the identity of that girl, it’s Dragon, right?"
Liszt laid his cards on the table.
Caroso was not overly surprised, as this was unexpected but reasonable. He had been dealing with these people for over a month—how could such a long time pass peacefully?
He performed the Transformation Skill.
Finding someone to blame and then exploding with a combination of emotional appeals.
"It’s Goria who doesn’t want her to become a political tool, planning to stay in Heaven Port. Fafna’s nature is just that of a child; you understand this better than I do. Sending her to the Foreign Country to become military power would be pushing her into a pit of fire, and deceiving an innocent stranger to join the army and wander between life and death. Although I don’t fully understand your doctrines, it seems somewhat unethical, probably conflicting with the doctrines of the Holy Spirit. What do you think? The authority of the Holy Spirit is certainly important, but its Chapters cannot be altered. Besides, aren’t you just trying to deal with the Emperor and the Eternal Sect? I’ll help you fight them; I will support the thirteen Holy Spirits. Frankly, I have many secrets here. As long as you swear in the name of the Holy Spirit not to tell anyone, I’ll lay everything out for you, and then you can make your decision later."
Liszt first made Goria take full responsibility and showed a bit of sentimentality, then planned to fight magic with magic, aiming to convince the Madman using a crazy person’s thought process.
The Netherworld Stele, where his ambitions lay, could all be told to Caroso.
You wouldn’t... betray the Holy Spirit, would you?
Additionally, collecting the Stone Tablet Fragments was truly too difficult; the Black Sail could indeed not manage it. But what if a partnership with the Church was formed? Providing mutual value, not just one-sided needs, both parties would have leverage over each other, forming a stable bond.
Of course, he had no right now to speak to the Holy Spirit Church, but once he became the Boss, he would be qualified. The game Liszt played was grand, each step a perilous move.
Caroso clenched his fist, himself... going against the doctrines?
"What decision? This place is full of your people, if it doesn’t work, are you just going to let me go?"
Caroso grew more cautious, sensing the evil cunning in Liszt’s mind. Not silencing him was meant to thoroughly control Fafna mentally? Such sinister intentions.
"I certainly won’t swear to the Holy Spirit, especially not to a pirate like you."
Caroso prepared to die here, drawing his long sword, faint lightning dancing around it—at least to fight his way out and tell Fafna about the viciousness of these people.
Liszt knew, it was forty percent done.
"You can leave, even take Fafna with you. The door isn’t locked, and there are ships at the port, be my guest."
Liszt made no resistance, starting to show off. The Emperor’s Skill—how could a mere mortal fathom it?
Caroso was stunned; it was that simple?
What trick was Liszt playing?
Besides, now that the handover was problematic and danger was everywhere outside, where to go was unknown. Running around with Dragon would be courting death.
"You think I’ll believe your nonsense? There must be your people lying in ambush. But what you’re going to say next, I can swear to the Holy Spirit, as long as it doesn’t violate the doctrines, I won’t tell anyone."
Caroso had made a decision.
Liszt’s eyes flashed, his plan taking shape, sixty percent accomplished.
Perhaps it could even be considered a done deal.
"Violating the doctrines... still has to be judged by you, so I plan to correct some of your standards beforehand. Although we are pirates, we are all men of emotion, never bullying the weak. Here in Heaven Port, it’s all vile and evil, slaying them brings great joy, why not do it? As for robbing merchant ships and plundering nobles, it’s also robbing the rich to aid the poor. What I collect is a security management fee, purely doing charity. The people who have taken refuge here all speak highly of it. I think it’s necessary to first explain to you the social structure of this world, as well as some underlying rules."
