Chapter 122: CXXII. Magic
Chapter 122: CXXII. Magic
"The people from the Thieves’ Guild, we must catch them."
Swan had undergone the same training, how could he not recognize the skill.
He and Shadi quickly vaulted over the roofs of buildings, incredibly agile, avoiding the sharp-tipped eaves and obstacles, leaping across a complex of buildings all 30 to 40 meters tall.
"The Thieves’ Guild? I knew they’d come knocking sooner or later; finally, I can test out Zahak’s sword."
Shadi hated these lingering debts of vengeance, by killing this one, at least he could rest easy for a while.
He drew his sword, the blood-red mist trailing behind him as he moved.
Soon, on the roof of an inn, Ben found himself at a dead end. This was a crossroads, with the building opposite about fifty meters away.
Ben took off his special clay mask, revealing his true face.
Another Dark Elf, with light purple skin, some with light gray—Ben was the latter, with lower bloodline status. Black hair, scars as thick as fingers started from his left eyelid and spread to the corner of his mouth, extremely fierce.
"Swan, by stealing those items, you should have foreseen this day coming. However, considering you’ve got some skill, hand them over and come back with me and we’ll call it even."
Since he couldn’t get the Dragon through negotiation, and couldn’t take it by force alone, now that he was aware of the situation, he joined the game, called up his friends, and plotted for great things. How could this Pirate Gang possibly keep such heavenly treasures secure?
Alone, without any burdens, leaving was as easy as turning one’s hand. He could escape to the deep jungle on the island and just sneak onto any ship at night and go anywhere he wanted.
He had the confidence to say that.
Swan and Shadi stopped as well, not approaching rashly, standing on the rooftop platform over ten meters away from Ben.
"Who do you think you are? This isn’t the Western Continent, this is Heaven Port; you think you can just walk out?"
Even though Shadi said this, he grew cautious as well. He never considered himself a Dark Elf; he had no such racial sentiments. He invented a new elf race called Handsome Elf and started his own harem—to him, this was perfectly logical.
Swan did not reply. Joining the guild was simply to root out Diaz and avenge his father and brothers, so there was no reason for him to go back.
By stealing this treasure, he had dealt a blow to Diaz as well.
Ben pulled two decks of cards and spread them out like streams.
Shadi was startled. Was this magic or something?
"You should know that a messenger like you is not on the same level as us. Even as a former regional Staff Chief, do you think you can last one round against me?"
Right then, a sea breeze swept by, taking advantage of the moment.
In an instant, a tumult of flying feathers, hundreds of cards all traced an S-shaped trajectory, forming a murderous formation that exploded out.
Like a torrential downpour of fierce attacks.
In just a moment, Shadi and Swan were on the defensive.
Swan could only guard his head and throat with his short sword, turning the cards into confetti, because as thieves themselves, they used all the underhanded tricks they knew. The lethality of the cards was strong, but their penetrating power was limited, obviously targeting the throat.
Even so, Swan’s limbs and torso were quickly slashed open, oozing blood, and he hurriedly flipped behind a chimney to take cover, no longer forcing himself to stand, or else certain death was inevitable.
A card slashed across Shadi’s side, the strike harsher than a knife, cutting a chunk out of his flesh.
He couldn’t block them at all.
"All flash and no substance."
Shadi upgraded his gear, channeling Qi into his Magic Energy Longsword, also severing his palm to feed the blade, and with one slash, the power exceeded Shadi’s expectations.
This sword was a teaching gift from Aran Sword King to Zahak, with craftsmanship and materials, and the blacksmith, all of the highest quality.
With a powerful slash, the wind from the sword was wild, scattering all the cards, sending an arc of blood-red light speeding towards Ben, tearing up a trench in the rooftop and whipping up dust and stones.
But Ben easily sidestepped it; no matter how strong the force, it was useless if it didn’t hit the target. At that moment, Liszt and the others were also coming down the street.
Ben knew he couldn’t stay long; from his large black robe, he took out a hook, crouched down, and leaped off the building, jumping more than ten meters away. The hook shot towards another building, its claw latching onto a point to leverage from.
It was like flying.
Ben’s hand yanked back, and in an instant, he reached the rooftop of a building fifty meters away, leaving Shadi and Swan far behind as he continued to dash through the uneven skyline of buildings.
"If we can’t find it before tonight, then we’re in big trouble."
Swan was well aware that, although his face-to-face combat ability had already grown strong, it was at night when these kinds of people’s lethality was truly terrifying.
"This guy, is too fast."
For a moment, Shadi didn’t know what to do.
Without that damn transmitter, Ben would have chosen to carry out the exchange at night. Unfortunately, even the most meticulous plans have flaws.
One minute later.
By this time, Ben had already left the agile Shadi and Swan far behind, to the point where they could no longer see even his shadow, the buildings growing sparser.
Due to his swift movement, the wind blowing fiercely, Ben leaped between buildings with grace and elegance, akin to the flow of clouds and water.
He was nearing the edge of the Inner City, and a few more blocks would lead him into the forest.
But
There was someone faster than him.
On the red tiled roof of an antique building, Morison had already arrived ahead of time, waiting here to block his path.
Ben was stopped.
Today
It could be said to be the strangest day in Ben’s life, one absurd event following another. How could this man be ahead of him?
The disfigured face was terrifying, but previous intelligence had revealed no identity, and the Thief Guild’s information network didn’t have any files on him. If it were an unknown commoner, it could be forgivable, but this man was clearly a highly sought-after pirate.
"You think you can block my path all by yourself?"
Ben drew his dagger, his speed like a phantom, and charged forward with a beastly crouch.
Morison raised his arm, and the five-barreled gun fired.
"Do you think that kind of thing is going to work?"
Bang bang bang...
Firearm bullets had no effect on Ben; he deflected three bullets with a spin of his dagger, and the other two weren’t even close to hitting him.
Now within close range, surprisingly, he didn’t go for the throat but instead dived to the ground, holding the daggers in a cross shape to stab into Morison’s leg muscles, aiming to limit his mobility.
A crocodile-skin coat was tugged, revealing all blades, spinning towards Ben’s head.
Ben drew another dagger to parry, sparks flying in an instant. Using the momentum of his dive, he moved diagonally to get behind the disfigured man, the other dagger aiming for the tendons in his hindfoot.
Morison’s boots shot out a pointed knife, performing a Scorpion Leg maneuver as the blade’s cold arc swept towards Ben’s throat.
An ordinary person would have been instantly killed by Morison.
Ben’s eyes flashed.
Who was really from the Thief Guild? He immediately pushed off the ground with one hand, hopping back twice to avoid the deadly strike.
Ben could see that this man was no ordinary fighter.
"Come to the Thief Guild, and you can become a Shadow Messenger, with endless Golden Dragons at your disposal, whether it’s the Netherworld Stele or Dragons; this small Pirate Gang can’t protect you."
Ben spoke a logic that even a fool could understand—a simple choice. Robbing a ship, you might get a small share, but sea-level skills are limited. On land, kidnapping a hostage, extorting nobles, political assassinations—these offered astronomical fees by comparison.
"To become a Thief, wouldn’t that mean being cast into Hell?"
Morison said calmly.
