Chapter 54: Chapter 16: Before The Storm [6]

The memory made Luke sigh deeply, his brow creasing in exasperation.

He lifted his hand and pressed his fingers against his forehead, as though trying to feel something there. What brushed against his fingertips was smooth skin, with bits of dust that presumably came with the fall.

This mark on his forehead had been the bane of his existence ever since he came into this world.

He had seen it for himself a couple of times, back when he tried experimenting with his magic as a kid. Children were curious creatures, so he couldn’t help but marvel at what he could do.

The mark was shaped like a small crescent moon, and it glowed blue whenever he used his magic. Rare were the times when it glowed during moments other than that.

He had been sheltered as a kid, so it took him some time to realize the truth.

What the marks of the color blue meant to this world.

’’Why do the villagers hate me, Mom?" a seven-year-old Luke asked his mother one day.

His father was out fishing in the nearby lake while his mother was preparing lunch for the four of them. Luke’s sister, on the other hand, was up in her room, studying. She wanted to become a researcher, so she would often hole herself up in her room, studying all day.

Luke’s mother was a kind-looking woman who, despite her humble background, carried herself with a quiet elegance similar to that of a noblewoman. He had never seen her angry, and she was always calm and patient with him no matter what.

He loved her very much.

"Don’t mind them, honey," she said, her back still turned to him as she continued to chop vegetables. "They don’t know any better."

Luke blinked. "What do you mean?"

"Son..." His mother sighed softly as she set down the knife and turned to face him. With a gentle smile, she beckoned him over, and he obeyed.

She reached out and patted him lightly on the cheek.

"You’re still young, so I can understand that you are curious about your magic," she said. "But sweetie, I think it would be best if you stop doing that from now on. Specifically in front of other people."

"But why? Magic is awesome! The other kids don’t have it, so—"

She sighed. "It’s not that I’m forbidding you to use it. It’s just that... you can’t show it to anyone. It’s for the best."

Luke found it hard to understand. "Why not?"

"Because people are afraid of what they don’t understand," she said gently. "Your magic is different from the others, that’s why."

"Oh. I saw one of the adults wield magic. But the color of his mark was orange! Is that the reason?" He thought about it for a moment, brow furrowed in concentration. "Why is mine blue, Mom?"

"I will tell you when you’re older," she promised. "Just don’t show anybody your magic for now. At least, until we move to—"

"But I don’t wanna move away!" he interrupted with a pout. "I like it here. Zach’s here! He’s my Guardian. You told me yourself!"

"I know, honey. As for Zach..." She looked sad for a moment. "The two of you don’t deserve this. You’re both too young to go through something like this. We should—"

-

The sound of a distant roar instantly snapped Luke out of his thoughts, cutting the memory short.

What was that?

He quickly got up from the steps, feeling his stomach drop.

That’s enough reminiscing for now. It’s time to get out.

He climbed the stairs once more, trying to suppress the suffocating feeling in his lungs. The air here was musty, and the darkness and lack of ventilation were beginning to get to him.

Finally, he reached the top, and there was a large wooden door with ancient symbols etched into its surface.

It didn’t take him long to realize that it was sealed with magic.

I presume that only the high priests and priestesses are allowed access here in the old basement, he thought. But judging from the condition of the place, it seems that nobody has been here for years.

When he glanced behind him, all he could see was darkness. It made him feel uneasy, being surrounded by obscurity. It felt as if something would rush at him at any moment.

I gotta get out of here.

He pressed the palm of his hand against the door, and almost instantly he felt a surge of electricity run through his arm, making him wince.

It’s rejecting me. I need to make do with the limited magic that I have.

Luke closed his eyes and concentrated on the magical locks that secured the door. Since Summoners had white magic similar to the support magic that the priests wielded, it was possible for him to undo the seal as long as he was careful.

If he got too hasty or aggressive, the seal might reject him again and throw him backwards this time.

Just relax, and let the magic flow.

He directed the holy energy towards the enchantments woven into the seal. The symbols responded one by one, shimmering in acknowledgement as he slowly unraveled the threads.

Then, after what seemed like an eternity, a soft click echoed in the darkness.

Luke sighed, feeling even more drained than before. He tried not to collapse to the ground from exhaustion.

You’re almost there. Persevere.

He reached for the latch and turned it gingerly. Then, he pushed the heavy door open, revealing a sliver of light.

He stepped into the area and slowly closed the door behind him. It seemed to be a quieter corner away from the main hall, judging by the small space. There were also several boxes stacked in the corner.

This was probably another storage room, but one that was frequently used.

Luke stepped up to the glass windows and peered in. Something strange was in the air, and he needed to know what it was.

It’s too quiet.

Outside, he could see the dark gray clouds swirling above, and there was an immense amount of energy building up nearby, sending his senses on high alert.

What the hell?

What happened since I passed out?

He turned his head towards the door and rushed over to open it. It was a narrow corridor, but at least there was enough illumination for him to see.

He walked down the stairs in dread, and when he finally reached the end, he stopped in his tracks.

What greeted his eyes was the main hall of the church, seats empty and devoid of people.

Where is everyone?

Luke took a single step forward.

And in an instant, the entire atmosphere changed.

A faint rumbling echoed through the church, sending chills down his spine. The temperature plummeted, and an unnatural gust of wind swept through the entrance, its strength overwhelming enough to force the heavy doors apart.

Luke staggered, feeling a weight so immense that it forced him to his knees.

By the gods! he cried in his head.

Don’t tell me that this is...!
