Who is Pei Roujin aside from his famous identity as a movie Emperor? He was actually just the same as an ordinary person like others. Just a son and an older brother. Pei Roujin came from an abusive family. His father always gambled and his mother was never someone who dared to fight with him. During those times, he was just incharge of being the substitute or even a propsman to a set. Until someone finally noticed him. It was an old Director whom he happened to save. The latter wanted to pay for what he did especially when he knew that he was just an amatuer actor. At first, the Director wanted to offer a supporting character role. His payment will surely double but Pei Roujin didn’t agree. Instead of taking that, he asked to have a job even with just being a staff member for a long time period.

What he cared about at that time was not a role about being an actor or the double payment but something that he can get with a longer period. If he accepts the role, his father will probably just get all the money or he cannot even use it for himself. Might as well have a job where he can get even every month. Even if it’s smaller, as long as there is, he won’t have to worry too much where he can find a way to earn.

When he said that, the Director looked at him for a few seconds before asking him something.

’Does he like to act?’

Pei Roujin answered that he likes it because he can earn money, not because he’s passionate. Hearing those words made the Director nod and say something again.

’If that’s your purpose then you can never be a qualified actor.’

At that time, he didn’t care. As long as he has money, whatever others think is why he entered this job, he doesn’t care.

He thought he’d stay where he was. Until his sister happened to watch one of the movies he worked with. Even though it was just a few seconds on the screen and his role and was even just a labor worker, Rouyao clapped her hands and praised him as if he was the leading character.

And just seeing her smile and the pride in her eyes made his heart unknowingly warm for no reason. Pei Roujin merely thought it was just because he was happy seeing her but when he was under the lens of the camera again and acted, a strange feeling started to arouse inside him.

For the first time, he felt happy doing this.

Pei Roujin started wanting to see that smile on his sister’s face again so he worked harder. He seemed to find another purpose when he’s in front of the camera and what’s even fortunate was he unknowingly gained recognition from others too and thus this gave him a chance to earn.

A year had passed in this kind of situation and yet just as he thought that everything would be alright, that incident came.

His mother and his sister Rouyao died in a car accident.

Only he himself knows how devastating he felt— the despair and fear that engulfed him completely. Pei Roujin was suddenly drowned by that feeling. Unable to accept the truth, he wanders around like a dead zombie. He couldn’t act nor even live a normal life again after the incident.

He felt that it was too sudden. Why did they die when he was still working hard to give them a life? He was just starting!

He still wanted to see the pride in his sister’s eyes as she watched him act. He still wanted to see his mother’s warm smile to comfort him everyday. Why did that even leave him?

Pei Roujin couldn’t accept what happened and lived like this for a long period. He refuses to work and just immerses himself in grief and despair.

What was only fortunate probably was his father’s drastic changes. Their deaths finally woke him up and thus began changing his life. He stopped gambling and just worked hard to pay for his debts. But how could he care for the man who didn’t take care of his wife and daughter?

Pei Roujin would never forgive him. Why did he only change when it’s too late? If only it was sooner, his mother and sister would have their life more happy before they died. Or maybe if it was him who manovered the car, maybe they wouldn’t have an accident because his mother is weak.

Pei Roujin didn’t care about the world around him anymore.

After a long period of being like that, he finally decided to take a step for himself when he happened to see the old video of himself. It was that scene wherein he first saw his sister’s smile for him.

As Pei Roujin remembered that inside his heart, he gathered himself to take another courage and act again. During those days, he drowned himself in workload. He busied himself and acted like another person so he won’t remember his real life.

It was also the time where he found freedom within himself. He felt himself liberated from the chain of their deaths. Only the times where he acted and was like another person that he felt he escaped from the extreme sadness inside him.

Pei Roujin became obsessed with it. He used acting as a way to save himself.

Subsequently, he also found a new source to live.

His fans.

Just like what he told Qin An in the past, acting was the only way for him to be free. But with his fans encouragement and love, he also found himself holding onto that to survive.

He found a way for himself. Pei Roujin used that way to continue living, not just for him and to his sister but also to those who trusted him.

However, even if he finally succeeded and even became the movie Emperor, there was always something missing inside him. And that is for them. He will not forget them.
