Chapter 173: Chapter 172: Old Soldier

Chapter 172: Old Soldier

Was there a time when he ever regretted his action? There will always be— haunting him every night.

The Old Admiral Sheng who’s name is Sheng Xia is actually a soldier with real sincere intentions at first. He was not born with any silver or golden spoon— instead he was even born from a faraway planet. At first, his ambition in life was only to have a life where he and his family will no longer starve. He just wanted to survive and have a peaceful life like anybody else.

Sheng Xia doesn’t even have a high qualification on his physical and mental power, having only double B level. Just someone who’s very average and was also living an average ordinary life of a person.

Until the Zergs came to his home planet.

They destroyed everything he has— even his own family. Sheng Xia’s family died with only his two younger siblings with him.

The government moved them to another planet and their life wasn’t even good there, especially that they have no guardian and don’t have anything.

As the older brother, he had the responsibility to take care of his younger siblings at such a young age. He did everything and worked harder than anyone else just to survive.

He was also lucky enough to have the scholarship and enrolled in a military academy where he was lucky again to be seen by others due to his hard working personality. Some from wealthy families saw him like that and trusted him to do some errands.

Sheng Xia was treated by everyone as someone who can work for them but he gladly accepted it for the sake of sending money to his siblings.

Then everything turned into his way when they went on a mission and he saved someone’s life. That classmate was grateful and thus helped him. Providing him the materials and access to equipment where he can practice, giving him a job and even offering a house with a monthly budget for his family so he doesn’t have to worry anymore.

With that easing his burdens, Sheng Xia was able to survive and focus on improving himself. It was a tough ride and exhausting path but he managed to raise his physical level to S. He sacrificed too much and everyone was good to him.

As time passes by, his life keeps on turning to a good side because of his potential. Even with many obstacles, he never yielded.

This granted him enough positions in the military combined with his countless contributions during battles.

He was even glad to meet his lover from a wealthy family, got married, had a son and later on had his only grandson. He was living the life where he no longer worries about anything anymore.

But things went downhill when his own son grew arrogant and incompetent.

Because his son grew up with a golden spoon and had everything since birth, he became lawless. He often had some troubles for him and due to his contributions and connection, everyone became lenient. He thought that his son was doing great because everytime he asked anyone, they would always say that he was doing well.

It turns out that they were just doing it for his sake.

He only found out when a student who was bullied for a long time finally spoke to him that the truth was revealed.

But it’s too late. His son had already grown to the age where he no longer listened to him. And as his own son, he also yielded.

And this continued even when his grandson grew.

This was the years where Zergs went rampant again and as the only one who’s capable in the family, he went to the war and made contributions again. Years had passed and when he retired, Sheng Xia promised to himself that this time, he will take care of his family and spend time with them.

Yet, the second time happened.

His grandson— Sheng Du is also another incompetent like his son.

He wasn’t able to look out for him and thus he became like his father— full of arrogance and only dependent on power.

Originally, he wanted to correct it. He wanted to make things right after what happened with his son.

But when Sheng Du begged and he saw his own grandson fall into deep frustration when he cannot win against others, especially on He Li, he yielded again.

At first, his grandson’s requests were mild and simple and thus he gave in.

Until those requests gradually turned bigger and outrageous.

Things changed again when that time, Sheng Du requested to assassinate He Li.

Sheng Xia doesn’t do it of course. His bottom line as a soldier tells him not to kill an innocent person especially for these reasons.

Yet again, as he saw He Li outshined his grandson again and again, he slowly wavered. Even in the military, some things changed especially when others faced He Li’s grandfather He Shi. They always chose him instead of him. Even though he knew that the latter was stronger, his insecurities built up again.

Just because his son He Zhen and grandson He Li were both outstanding and will surely have the power in the future.

This gave him the fear of going back to where he was.

Sheng Xi is actually not worried for himself. He can endure it. But what about his other family? He never wanted to go back to where he had to worry about everything. He doesn’t want his family to live what he had in the past where even begging on the street was hopeless.

Judging from his son and grandson’s capabilities, they clearly don’t have the will to survive in any life lower than what they have.

Hence, another compromise began.

It’s just that He Li didn’t die and instead another member was.

Truthfully, he was scared. He had nightmares every time he thought of how he finally broke the oath he promised.

Sheng Xia is no longer a soldier.

His hands were stained.

It was so wrong but as the He family stepped higher again and again, he could only find himself doing shady things.

’Till he became numb and he couldn’t find himself having the will to live anymore.

Now, it’s finally over.

The things he did for the family had come to light and he had no way on especaping.

This was even worse having just been poor again because this will haunt them throughout their lives.

He regretted anything but that was his choice. His fear ate him.

The helplessness of an unknown bad future drowned him and turned him like this.

Sheng Xia opened his brain and scrolled to all the contacts he had. He can actually do something. He can save his other family and just own up their mistakes so it will be him who’ll be punished. It’s better than going to jail anyway.

This will be his final leniency towards his family.

— This is what he thought to do.

However, when he contacted his friends, they did not agree with him.

Not even giving him a shield nor a single comfort. No one will help him this time.

As time passes by, as the contacts on his brain slowly decrease, the desperation inside him becomes louder. The helplessness once again engulfed him and his body trembles in fear and anxiety.

With the final dial on his brain and he received another beeping sound as a sign of being blocked, his hands finally lost their strength to click and fell helplessly.

The remaining energy on his body disappeared abruptly and Sheng Xiafelt his body grow cold.

Even though he already expected this result, he was still sad.

But what can he do? Nothing.

Sheng Xia closed his brain and leaned his back on the chair. His eyes stared blankly at the ceiling above him for such a longer period before his hands finally found a small strength to raise again.

He once again opened his brain and this time, he didn’t go to the list of contacts anymore.

Instead, he clicked a certain app and a small flying ball appeared.

When Sheng Xia saw a small red light in front of him, he took a deep breath.

This time, he will yield.

Not to his family’s madness... but to the country he owed as a soldier.

While everyone was waiting anxiously for the next news about the high controversy of the Old Admiral, they were stunned when a notification appeared on their brain.

The Old Admiral is actually live broadcasting!

"!!!" Is this true?!

The crowd quickly scrambled to his account and opened the live broadcast room where they really saw the old man sitting in his private office.

He looks very haggard and weary as he faces the camera with such a heavy gaze.

The audience that was divided into two fractions went silent as they stared at the soldier that once protected the country for how many decades.

This was one of the warriors who fought for their peace.

At this time, what will he really do? What will he say?

Actually, even the people on He Li’s side were still in a complicated situation right now. They admired this old man and his heroic history were facts. Thus, even though they supported the Marshal, they are still hoping like the people who trusted the old admiral.

That maybe there’s misunderstandings and such, right?

But no. Unfortunately, the truth will always come to light.

Because after a few seconds of silence, Sheng Xia finally speaks.

"I am here to confess all my sins— the crime that my family did to the country." Sheng Xia begins his truthful confession in front of the eyes of everyone.

"What the Marshal posted was true. I am indeed a sinner." Sheng Xia’s eyes dimmed.

"... I am a traitor of the country."
